I visited the Hopvine for the first time last night. I went with a group of friends who used to frequent the place when they lived on Capitol Hill. Upon arrival, they warned me that the service could be spotty. From my experience last night, I wouldn't so much consider it spotty as benignly bumbling. Our waiter began by bringing my friend the wrong beer. When she pointed out the mistake, he happily replaced it with the correct beer in a larger glass than she ordered at no extra charge. He even let us keep the first beer so that we could sample it for comparison and exchange of backwash. I ordered the pastrami grinder with fresh greens. I am becoming increasingly enamored of the dense, filling comfort food with a lighter side dish option at many restaurants. It makes me feel as though I am eating healthier while still allowing me to feel full. My sandwich was very tasty. The ample stack of salami was garnished with an excellent relish crafted in house. The relish contained chunks of dill pickle that were almost large enough to stab with a fork. The sandwich was served on a dense, crusty Gai's hoagie roll, which made me very happy. I simply cannot abide soft, squishy sandwich rolls. The only problem I found with the sandwich was it's tendency to squirt hot pastrami juice right down my sleeve whenever I took a bite. No matter how I held the sandwich, it always seemed to bulls-eye my sleeve like a sniper armed with a turkey baster. If someone else had taken a bite of my sandwich from a rooftop half a mile away, the juice probably still would have squirted right down my sleeve. Also, the combination of the relish on the sandwich and the vinaigrette on the salad was just a bit too much vinegar for my taste. When the time came to pay the bill, the bumbling service struck again. Our waiter processed our payment in a reasonably timely fashion, but almost as soon as we received our final receipt, a waitress who seemed particularly confused throughout the evening stopped by to see if we had sorted out our bill yet. The service was, once again, well-intentioned, but slightly bumbling. read more

Hopvine is a place for drinking, not for eating. Maybe the fare simply clashes with my palate, because I haven't liked a single food item I've tried in 3 Happy Hour visits, and I'm known as an adventurous eater. (Okay, only amongst Yelpers sure but I'm definitely not a picky eater) The beers are fine, decor fine. Very small, cozy and a good place to just hang with a friend and chat over a brew. But grab food elsewhere on 15th - there are plenty of places to choose from. read more

Ray: The Hopvine Pub is one of the few places Josh and I have visited that I have eaten at previously. When Josh lived on Capitol Hill, we ate at the Hopvine on several occasions. I was particularly looking forward to returning because my favorite (and I mean favorite as in so good it has become its own food group kind of favorite) menu item. That item is the Sausage Grinder. A delectable, delicious delight I simply can't say enough about or, dare say, live without. And I might add, I am not alone. I actually heard about the famous grinders from a friend before I ever ate one. Traffic was a living hell, but the thought of that grinder kept us driving on. When we finally arrived, we found available seating and had menus and beers in front of us post haste. That's when I noticed something had changed. Something very, very bad had changed. There were actually no grinders on the menu. No grinders. I heard the sound of a phonograph needle scratching across an LP record. NO GRINDERS? Who the hell approved that decision? I asked our waiter, who appeared to be post grinder. He didn't really know so he said they weren't ordered very much. Right... a thing like that can happen in this universe. I'm calling BS on that one. I asked if they could just make me one anyway and I was told no. Hmmm. I settled for the meatloaf sandwich. The sandwich arrived pretty quick. It was presented nicely and smelled great. The flavor, however was a touch on the bland side. Not at all like the delicious grinder I really wanted, but I digress. Did I mention that I can't live without them, I digress yet again. What am I to do? Ok bottom line. Under normal circumstances I would feel free awarding the Hopvine Pub an easy three or four stars. But under the current circumstances...I mean who decided to take the grinders off the menu? Who does that to their fellow man? Two stars for Hopvine Pub for dereliction of duty. I will return to the Hopvine and significantly improve my rating the day grinders make their way back on the menu. I do this, not for myself, but for all mankind. Josh: For those in "The Know" The Hopvine changed their menu a few years ago. They added a few things (like the meatloaf sandwich and the BLT, among other things), but it was what they removed that really has me bothered: The Grinders. They had absolutely the most delicious grinders I've had in the city. 5 grinders on the menu (peperoni, sausage, pastrami, turkey, and veggie) and each one was such a wonderful delight to the taste buds. I tried the other menu items, but nothing could touch the grinders. Not even close. They were a true experience in deliciousness. When I lived on Capitol Hill (very close to The Hopvine) I had friends that would come into the neighborhood just for the grinders. My friends from outside Seattle (Snoqualmie, North Bend, Enumclaw, etc.) would come just for the grinders. I was such a regular at The Hopvine when the menu changed that when I asked why they removed such a winning entree, I believe what I was told was the truth: They were a pain in the ass to make. They still had the ingredients (except for the bread), but just didn't want to make them anymore. When we went back there last Thursday we were told the grinders were removed from the menu because nobody was ordering them. I believe this to be untrue. Why, The Hopvine? Why did you do it? I should have written this review right when I found out the grinders were removed, but I didn't have the yelp page set up at the time. But now that we have 52 reviews under our belt (and literally hundreds of restaurants visited before we began to post yelp reviews), I believe I have a little more weight to throw around. But don't worry too much, The Hopvine, I'm sure there will be plenty of Amazon employees infiltrating the neighborhood to keep you afloat without you working any more hard to earn their dollars. Just keep being convenient. It's bad for Seattle's blooming culinary scene, but good for whatever it is you are trying to accomplish. So please, bring back the grinders. I like your establishment, good beer selection, fun open mic night, pizza is half-decent, I don't want to spit venom. But pretty please, with sugar on top, bring back the fucking grinders. read more

Delicious homemade-style soups, tasty sandwiches, good beer... but the service is pretty consistently flaky/slow. Why am I still giving it four stars? 'cause I like the atmosphere, I like the food, and the prices are reasonable, so I keep getting lured back in. There's plenty of options for vegetarians and some for vegans. Just be prepared to go up to the bar to get your water refilled, get your check/pay your bill, and sometimes to exchange whatever was brought to you erroneously. read more

Hopvine is a cute little neighborhood pub. I like it enough to go when it's suggested but it's not one of my favs or top picks. PROS: -- I like this part of Capitol Hill. There's a QFC, Safeway, drugstore, and countless coffee shops nearby. -- Decent food. I had a pretty good sandwich once. One of my friends loves the (pumpkin?) soup, and the pizzas look good. -- Kinda cute and cozy in there. CONS: -- Beer only. And since I am the opposite of a beer snob, sometimes a microbrew doesn't do it for me. I am not asking for PBR but Corona or Newcastle would be nice. -- The booths aren't very comfortable if you've been there awhile. -- I never thought the service was overwhelmingly slow, but so many other reviews mention it that it must be true. I've heard there is live music and open mic night but I can hardly envision this since I'm pretty sure Hopvine boasts the smallest stage in the history of the world. This was one of the first places I went after moving to Capitol Hill. Literally, we went here right after our move-in to warm up with beer and pizza. The pizza was tasty (which is why I gave it a two) and the beer was fine. And I'm sure the server will make a wonderful Wednesday in the next Addams Family movie, but should probably leave the service industry and soon. I heard this place had a rep for crappy service despite being a long-standing institution in Capitol Hill, but good grief. As a glutton for punishment or perhaps undaunted optimist, I went back again. Different server, same blowy service- missed orders for people at our table, crazy wait time for food, no attempt to check in and fill empty beers. I was kind of glad they didn't bother, because it meant spending less cash there. Not to mention that Hopvine seems to draw quite the insufferable crowd. Good beer but I am suspicious of the food. Anything I have eaten is just kind of blah. Pizza is not good at all. It seems that it's easy to get lost in the big booths, which could be either nice or annoying depending on your point of view. Might be better just to get drinks from the bar even if you're sitting in a booth because it takes quite a long time for someone to pay attention to you. Hopvine blows. The server was such a freaking jerk. We were there with a group of around 8 for several hours. She would take forever bringing things out, and then turn and scurry away before we could order anything else. Someone would pipe up "before you go can I order...", and she'd start to run away again, so another person would ask for something, and she'd turn to run away, etc. I hate it when servers totally suck when they have a group of 6+ and can automatically charge a tip. Yeah, I get it that large groups can also suck to serve and often leave small tips. In our case, the rude service was unwarranted. Also, the pizza is totally average, the chips and salsa come with a tiny bowl of not great salsa, the guacamole is meek, and they don't have a full bar. read more

Fantastic neighbourhood bar. Great place to hang out with friends or even by yourself reading your book. Every wednesday night is open mic night and there are usually at least a few good musicians playing. Second and fourth tuesdays are trivia nights, which are a lot of fun with a group of friends. The beer changes often and this place has a lot of interesting brews on tap (unlike the "pubs" that serve Bud Lite - ickity ick) and even has some decent wines for the people in your party that don't like beer (you know who they are). read more

I wanted Hopvine to be my neighborhood bar so desperately when I moved to the Hill. It had all the elements that I wanted -- beer, food, super cute place, walking distance -- and every time I left, I felt disappointed. A lot of Yelpers talk about the strange vibe of the place and I agree. The service isn't great -- it's not bad, just slightly apathetic. I felt like I was at someone else's party where I thought I was invited and it turns out I wasn't but I couldn't get a ride home and so I was awkwardly stuck. But I wanted it to be my place so badly that I kept giving it another chance. The beers are great, but you can get most of them somewhere else close. The food is definitely not anything to write home about and I vaguely remember it taking a long time to arrive. And then there's some open mic night where the place is super packed and it seems like there's always someone SCREAMING into the microphone. You can hear it from the street as you're walking by to go to another bar. I finally gave up and I don't think I will return. Don't be fooled -- it looks great from the outside but it's not going to end up what you think it should be like. read more

Went here recently on a Sunday afternoon after a couple of year absence and was reminded of why I like this place so much. It's really a neighborhood pub - without trying to replicate the English-style pub experience. Good beer selection, food is not boring pub fare, but not pretentious either, and the service was good. I also remember (although I didn't have this recently) that the soups here are particularly good. From walking by in the evenings I know it gets crowded, but it was sparsely populated when I went on Sunday, which was perfect for a mid-afternoon beer/conversation with a friend. Came here on St. Patrick's day and I was surprised it wasn't packed but also grateful to have some space. Small pub but roomy. The bartender who I'm assuming was the owner was so friendly and helpful. I was totally lost in what to order but he let me sample a few beers before choosing one! He even brought us two jugs of water (we were a group of 7)! Gotta stay hydrated :) Good selection of beers. You really can't beat the prices here. I got a beer and cider for $9 total. My only complaint is the crowd here. They had some pretty racist comments that came out of nowhere but that isn't necessarily something the pub can control so not holding them responsible for that. read more

The Hop Vine is a great neighborhood bar. The beer selection is great and constantly changing so there's always something new to try. The food is a step up from most bar food but it does take a while to get as their kitchen is very small. But if you have the time it's worth the wait. Their soups are awesome. I love the Potato Leak Soup. Be careful of the Red Pepper Soup as it is extremely spicy. The staff are all incredibly friendly. They could probably use another person sometimes, but if you desparately need another beer just go up to the bar and they'll take care of you. If you're an inpatient person this might not be the place for you. The only thing I dislike about the Hop Vine is their music nights. They have a couple of different live music nights; open mic night and singer-songwriter showcase to name a few. I love the idea, but the Hop Vine is too small for how loud the music is. They usually set up a PA which really is unnecessary for the size of the space. I think too many people go there to chat over beer and I know I for one don't go in when there is music because I know I won't be able to talk to the person I came with. Food is awesome. Expensive, yes, but much higher quality than your average "bar food". That's why 2 stars instead of 1. Service is always terrible. I've been here several times and dealt with several different people, and it's always terrible. When I was sitting at a table working on my computer, the guy waiting on me gave me the wifi password. Didn't work. I told him it didn't work, and he gave me another one to try. Also didn't work. He never came back over to our table so I went up to the bar to find him. I told him the second wifi password didn't work either and he said that I shouldn't be on my computer in a bar anyway, that I should be socializing. There are 3 or so girls who work the bar, it's hard to remember because they all act like they hate the customers and their jobs, and they all dress like they're going to a punk rock show. The Hopvine has good food, but the service is consistently the slowest I've seen in Seattle. They have a tiny kitchen that might be able to support a restaurant half it's size. I used to eat at the bar on nights that weren't crowded, but I've had enough painfully slow experiences that I no longer go back there at all. The wait staff isn't exceptionally fast either. The wine and beer selection is okay, but not great. They have a big local selection which is good, but alot of the microbreweries they choose just aren't good. We went for the happy hour and ordered the potstickers, knot bread with marinara sauce, and pita bread with tabula. The potstickers were bland, as was the marinara sauce. It reminded me of the sauce they provided in lunchables when I was in grade school. The tabula was ok (a little bitter), as was the pita bread but everything we ordered was missing something as far as flavor. I would return to grab a pint minus the bar food. Oh, and the waitress randomly cut us off after two beers. We were done drinking but it was the fact that she didn't ask if we were finished that was rude. read more

My boyfriend and I live on the top of the hill near Hopvine and like to frequent this place due to the nice pub like atmosphere. I've always thought the service could be better and never really had it weigh into my overall experience of food and drinks until this past weekend. Here's the story: We came in for a friends birthday and innocently enough my bf asked the bartender if there was anything special she could do. He wasn't pushy and wasn't really expecting anything, just wanted to ask. She not only gave him attitude and mocked him, but then I watched her go over to the only other bartender in the place and tell the story mocking him in front of other customers. I've worked in the service industry for years and this is absolutely the worst possible thing. It closed the deal and I'll gladly never go back here. Learn some manners and appreciate those that come into your bar. We're locals who enjoyed grabbing a brew from your place every now and then. We can gladly go elsewhere. Overall: food is decent, drink selection ok, service absolutely horrible. I'd recommend going else where on the Hill where you are actually valued as a paying customer. read more

This was a great little spot we found on Yelp as we explored this neighborhood. We sat at the picnic table out front for a pint on tap and a small meal. Both homemade soups were delicious and served with very fresh focaccia bread. The hummus plate was generous and delicious. Nice stop! read more

Yum! Two days later and I'm still thinking about the yummy grinder I had. Those who commented on the relish are totally right - it's awesome! Usually the word relish scares me, I imagine some icky thing made from sweet pickles lumped on a greasy hot dog. I was pleasantly surprised by Hopvine's house made relish that seemed more like a cabbage salad. I may try to recreate at home. Hopvine feels like a comfortable, neighborhood place, where one could come to know the employees and be recognized as a frequent patron. I probably won't be very frequent since I don't live nearby, but I did enjoy my experience. Others have commented on slowness of service, but mid-afternoon on a bank holiday was a great time to go, very prompt service (food coming out, order being taken, water refilled, etc). I didn't investigate the restroom for accessibility, but my companion said that I'd be at least able to get inside (maybe not if the bar is crowded and all the stools are pushed back). I was able to maneuver under the table without smashing my toes, and the booths looked like they'd be easy to transfer into. read more

While waiting for a friend to arrive in the area I stumbled upon this place looking for a cold brew. Its early evening on a Saturday and the bar top is packed. The bar tender sees me peeking over and between the heads on the stools and comes around from thebback of the bar to greet me and offer me suggestions based on my preferences. I am a sucker for a good greeting. If I feel valued as a customer right from the get go, its probably going to be a good time. I duck into a booth with a book, the speakers blare jams from the 60s and 70s, and it just feels good in there. I can tell this is a local fav for the neighborhood. Shout out to the quick and attentive bar tenders, even swinging by my booth and offering me a second beer. Keep those bartenders, they make this neighborhood sparkle. The Hopvine is my favorite place on Capitol Hill to swill a beer and shoot the shite with a friend or two. It's the place I always seem to end up at on a rainy winter eve or to say goodbye to a close friend. I think I love it so much because the food is absolutely stunning. The soups and salads are exqusite- better, I think, than some "gourmet" restaraunts, and really reasonably priced. On top of that the staff has always been exceptionally friendly and sans the typical Capitol Hill hipster attitude. They may be slow, but they always smile when they bring your beer to the table 30 minutes later =) I really don't have any but positive things to say about the Hopvine. Get there early to snag a booth and stay all night to converse with the interesting, diverse crowd and bob your head politely to occasionally good, local singer/songwriters belting their hearts out on the tiny stage. read more

I'm sitting at the bar b/c a friend told me that they've got some great vocalist that show up regularly for their open mics and I'm supposed to be helping my roommate to find a singer for her band. So I'm here by myself before open mic starts up and start perusing the list of beers. Let me just say that within the first 10 min's of being at the bar, I witnessed them erase several beers on tap from the list and add additional ones. That should give you an idea of the array of different beers they have on tap, how frequently they change the rotation and how delicious they are as a result of the witnessed turnover rate. The place gets a little crowded and it seems small. Grab a seat in the front of the bar if you're there to enjoy the music or a booth in the back if you're just there for some bonding with great background noise. I prefer sitting directly at the bar b/c the bartenders are pretty damn friendly and have great recs on whatever they've got on tap. read more

Now, I have stated in countless posts how much I love soup and how I could eat soup ever day. But somehow, every time I've been here, the soups just don't seem appetizing to me in any way. I know everyone raves about the soups here, but seriously, I have yet to find a soup here that I enjoyed. But that's just me. It's a nice, fun place to come and the service is good. It's just that I don't drink beer and the fact that they only serve beer sucks. And since I don't care for the soup here, I just feel like I end up sitting at the table doing nothing but drink glassfuls of water while everyone else is having a good time. I love the Hopvine. The beer selection is FANTASTIC. Lots of great microbrews and I've never had one come out skunky. Ever. The food ranges from good (sandwiches) to great (pizza knots, soup). The service is always friendly and usually quick. You may have to wait longer for food and drinks on a super-busy night, but that's to be expected. The crowd here is friendly and fun. It's not overly loud or obnoxious -- it's just right. Okay, so EVERYTHING here isn't perfect (I really don't like their salsa), but it's my neighborhood bar and a great place to relax and have a beer or two. I love this little cafe and wine and beer bar. I sit here and work in the daytime and drink coffee, and then come here for wine and conversation at night. The food is tasty, mostly pizza, sandwhiches and salads. It's a really laid-back setting with basic, affordable food. A good place to bring a group of friends for a snack or cheap dinner, coffee talk, and a nice selection of basic table wines, and very good beers. Staff is veryu warm and friendly. read more

I hadn't been here in a couple years but decided to check it out for happy hour with a friend. I wasn't completely blown away, but it was a good time. We were lucky to get a table, because it was CRAZY packed (at 5:30pm on a Wednesday - which is right in the middle of happy hour, which goes til 7). Our server was nice, but service was a bit slow and we had different servers once or twice, which was kind of awkward. I asked our original server to recommend me a beer (I do that a lot) and she picked a good one - of course I now forget what it was called, because I suck. My friend and I split the artichoke dip appetizer, she got the soup of the day (it was some sort of garlic something or other) and I had a Greek salad. The artichoke dip was good. Nothing mind-blowing, but good. I actually really liked the Greek salad. I wasn't sure what to expect, thanks to some of the spices listed on the menu, but it was delish. It was also just vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, artichokes, olives, a bit of onion), feta, dressing, and spices - no lettuce in sight. It might've been a bit heavy on the cucumbers, but I actually really enjoyed the lack of lettuce. It was a little loud, the happy hour menu only includes a handful of appetizers (I know, that's really par for the course... but still), and the service was a titch slow as I mentioned... but otherwise I had a good time & I don't know why I don't come here more often, especially for the beer! read more

Hopvine is the place to go for for comfort food, cozy booths, and a great selection of beer. The food is electic and tasty, it's totally on the comfort end of the spectrum without being your usual greasy pub chicken strips and burgers. Definitely try the garlic knots, as they brighten the grossest of rainy winter nights. I hear all the soups are delicious, but i like the pumpkin so much I've never been able to bring myself to order something different. If you want a quiet atmosphere, you should go for lunch or early dinner, because quiz night, open mic and live music make the later evnings a little more crowded. I marked the price one dollar sign, because the food is pretty cheap and a great value, but as with any pub, a pitcher or two of tasty beer later and your price per person is way up. read more

I like this place a lot, but the servers remind you of what it might be like to live in an Eastern Block country during the Cold War, with no profit motive for performance. They come when they're good and ready. The first time I ate there, it took an hour (I'm not kidding: an hour) for the food to come. There were four of us in a 3/4 full restaurant, all ordering sandwiches. It felt like about 4 times too long to wait. It was not worth that wait, but almost! And the other two times I've been there, the wait was much more reasonable. The sandwiches are amazing - really. Amazing. Soups are very good. Beer is delicious. Atmosphere is cozy and unhurried. In the end, you actually grow to love the wait staff's languid demeanor, since they seem more just like friends who happen to be willing to bring you a sandwich (at some point), and conversations with them feel genuine. Hopvine is my favourite pub in the 15th area. Extremely solid local beer selection, delicious soups and sandwiches, and an adequately challenging (yet still fun) trivia night every two weeks--what more could I want? Well, I actually do have an answer to that; service is absolutely horrendous here. I learned very quickly that I get served way faster if I order directly from the bar the first time around--empty glasses seem to spur servers on more once you've got that first beer in front of you. Happy hour runs until 7, and I highly recommend it as you can get delicious pints for $3.50 each. Be warned that the pub is definitely on the smaller side--I wouldn't come here with a party of more than 6. read more

Spicy garlic rolls, dill ranch, apathetic but competent server. This will be quick. The garlic knot roll things have a spicy oil on them. Just FYI. The dill ranch is tasty tasty, but quite dilly, so if you want it more on the ranch-y side, probably pass. Our server was totally competent but also incredibly apathetic.
