The late Lloyd Rader saw that my mother, a newborn baby blonde with big blue eyes, had been put up for adoption. (My biological grandfather had been a married soldier during the war, and my biological grandmother had been his collateral damage while home on leave. But, again, different stories for different times, eh?) My adoptive grandmother, a kind and loving woman who herself cared for handicapped children at a private facility in Warr Acres, took it upon herself (along with her widowed sister and business partner at the time) to adopt Mother in the same year she'd been born -- 1944. Both my adoptive grandmother, Mary, and her sister, Harvie, were thrilled with the quality and professionalism of the Deaconess home and corollary adoption service; they often spoke of the Deaconess Home with tears in their grateful eyes.

How did they come to this conclusion? Well, during the course of their 2-3 hour interaction with her, they learned that her Dad passed away when she was 7 years old. They felt that the loss of her Dad had rendered her unable to parent because, get this, "she didn't make enough eye contact nor does she remember enough details of her Dad's death 26 years ago." Are you serious?!?! They told her she needed to undergo psychological testing to determine her cognitive abilities. If anyone is unfit, it's the staff at Deaconess. How about you conduct a lengthier interview with her? Double check the references? Do any thing before you decide to tell someone they're unfit to be a Mom because of a significant loss experienced two decades ago. Fast forward a year - we went through a wonderful adoption consultant who's actually good at her job (and got us matched on the very first day)and now we have a happy, thriving baby boy. Our birth mom chose us because she had a feeling that my wife would be a great Mom and she was absolutely right. Deaconess is the worst.
