I asked for a large hot happy hour saki. When it arrived it was in a tiny bottle and lukewarm. The happy hour menu had no price list which I found odd. I ordered a glass of wine that tasted like it was open for weeks. I had two sips and I couldn't finish. My husband has a crab allergy so we always have to sub crab for shrimp. We ordered via DoorDash tonight at 5:38pm. The delivery was supposed to arrive between 6:38-6:50. It didn't arrive until 7:30. On top of being so late, the food was terrible. My husbands sushi came with NO wasabi, soy sauce, ginger or chop sticks. The garlic edamame tasted like it was bathed in vinegar only. My entree teriyaki chicken was horrible. FINALLY, FINALLY I've found one of THE best sushi places in all of San Diego!!! My business partner wanted to meet here yesterday and I was totally stoked. I've heard so many good things about this place, and let me tell you there were no disappointments. This isn't your traditional Sushi place where you're transported to Japan or something like that; this place is contemporary, with some traditional Japanese elements don't get me wrong, but their menu is EXTRAordinary. When you name a roll "Super Mario Bros" you've tossed tradition out the window. It has a casual feel with large tvs to watch the game or keep your kids entertained. Very kid friendly for sure or a great first date (date must love awesome sushi of course). I had their bento box, which is so reasonably priced for lunch, and a Stark Protein roll (no rice for those who like to bulk up on just protein. Soy paper was used to wrap instead of seaweed. See, non-traditional) which was also reasonably priced. Their salad dressing is house-made; you can just drink the dressing it's that delish. The reason I've mentioned twice how things are reasonably priced (now a third time) is because the quality is extremely out-of-this-world that I almost felt bad that I didn't pay more; I said almost ;-) Lastly, this place is family-owned. They have one in Carlsbad that has been opened for over 8 years now. The one in Encinitas has been opened for a year and doesn't get as much foot traffic like its Carlsbad location. Before the Encinitas location gets as packed as it's predecessor, get to the Encinitas one right now to make sure you don't have to wait too long to sit and enjoy all this deliciousness. Ask for RoseMarie who will help navigate you through the entire menu and will also provide superior customer service. The downside is that I didn't get to taste more items. I love their lunch specials and they're not skimpy on the ingredients when you pick the house roll that comes with the other roll, both had shrimp in it. Every time I'm in town my daughter we make it a point to eat here. Out of all my travels, this is one of my top 5 Sushi spots. It located in a shopping center just off the highway. They have the best spicy garlic edamame we've ever had. So, do yourself a favor and order it for an appetizer, you won't be disappointed!! We really like the 911, Super Mario and Rainbow rolls. We have never had a bad roll so any of them are really good but we tend to always order those. They also have some tremendous Tuna!! It looks and taste REALLY fresh. The atmosphere here is nice and fun and we always have GREAT service. But beware, they are closed on Sunday. read more

Love this place! Great atmosphere, good wait staff, and most importantly, really fresh and tasty sushi! We live in San Marcos and make the 25 min drive past the multitude of other sushi restaurants along the way to enjoy this restaurant. Sometimes a bit of a wait to get in, but worth it. Ask the sushi chef or staff what is good/fresh for the day you're there and they'll recommend a few fish for you. We haven't found any that were bad tasting, but some are better than others depending on the day. The albacore is something we always have to have. read more

Was in the mood for sushi and we decided to try this place out. Called ahead to order and was quoted a pickup time of 25 minutes. Realized I was 20 minutes away and booked it over to the restaurant since we were super hungry after being at the beach all day. Got there and was told it would be a little bit of a wait bc they were behind. I said no problem (I've worked in the restaurant industry for years & totally get it.) I proceeded to wait 45 minutes and nothing... Just the hostess and manager bringing out order after order and no luck. A woman even comes in, orders what I ordered, drank a beer, paid her bill and left and still no food. I've been told multiple times that they are bagging the food, that it is almost up, blah blah blah. At that point if I hadn't already paid, I would have walked out, and I'll admit I even questioned asking for a refund bc I was so frustrated, that I lost my appetite. But I tell myself they're probably short staffed and let it go. Then 1 hour and 25 minutes after I placed my order, I finally got my food. Obviously by this point I was hangry af and grabbed my food and went to the car to grub bc We weren't waiting any longer. After all that wait, the miso soup is room temperature, the salmon teriyaki is ice cold, the fried gyoza were sweaty, and the sauces on the sushi roll had sat for so long it made the sushi soggy. So. Very. Disappointed. We waited over an hour, and paid $65, and would have been happier with McDonald's. Will definitely NEVER come here again. read more

Compared to the plethora of other sushi restaurants in Encinitas, this one is more on the level of cafeteria sushi. Hooked On Sushi is an overall good choice when wanting to go out for sushi. It's well priced and the sushi rolls pack a punch of flavor.

The food is great. I recommend the zigzag roll or the Carlsbad. My only criticism is the tv screens. I have never seen anybody watching them and they are invasive. Maybe they should play beautiful scenery or something. Doesn't fit the vibe of the place. Dim the lights and kill the TVs! read more

Every time we go to our timeshare, we always go here. Rolls are big and not too pricey. We usually spend about $100 in rolls but there rolls are so big we got out for $75 with tip which is great! We have been here twice and it's our go to place. They even accommodated our kids who which wanted a sushi burrito. They don't have one, but makes it specifically for them. They ROCK! Checked this place out due to its high reviews. Ordered their tuna carpaccio which was smothered with more raw sliced onion than anything I've ordered that was described as "smothered in onion" and as a southern girl that's quite a bit. Once I pulled off the excessive onion, the tuna itself was decent quality, but sliced exceptionally thick and not as it should have been. Guessing that's why it was hidden under a pound of onion. Also ordered the Hooked on Sushi roll which was made with imitation crab not the snow crab it was supposed to have and its high price reflected. It was alright. The portions are big, and the service is good, but the sushi itself is lackluster. The rice was too soft and sticky, and the eel sauce was thick and kind of paste-like, which I found weird. I wasn't particularly impressed by the flavors of anything I tried. Best sushi spot in North County! We love coming here because it's so tasty and the service is always efficient. Every time we come here we're always greeted by a nice host and are always seated immediately. We're then greeted by a server and taking drunk orders before the butt hits the seat! The garlic edamame is a must have, the leftover sauce is even worth keeping for sushi dipping. The variety of roll choices suits everyones' needs, including sixteen vegetarian ones. The noodle plates are also a great choice, including the beef and chicken yakisoba! The servers work in teams, which I love. Nothing worse than needing something and you see servers walk past you because they "aren't your server." Only bummer is their 'loyalty' program is crap, you need to spend A LOT of money before you get a small discount. Been over 10 times without reaching enough points and we are two frequent foodies. Every time I have been here, the service has been terrible. As soon as we are seated at the sushi bar, which is obviously an inconvenience for the host to have to do something, the sushi chefs ignore you, and a server might stop by. When the server stops by and you say "a water for now, until I look at the drink menu" that apparently means, come back, drop off a water and walk a way as fast as possible so they have no chance to order a drink or something from the kitchen, and then don't come back, ever. Don't worry, they'll be back when the sushi chef tells them to drop off the bill. The servers disappear. You'll be lucky if the sushi chef's acknowledge you, great you or talk to you. The menu is great, if you don't actually appreciate sushi, and love eating imitation crab. We love sashimi, but got the tiniest pieces here, for more than we've paid at any other sushi place. I asked for fresh wasabi (not the paste they dump on your plate) and he said it would be an extra charge, I said okay. Never got it . . . We got the rolls and sashimi we ordered, but would've liked to have a beverage at this point. Oh wait, we had the water with lemon we ordered, however it was water with lime. Who puts lime in water, especially when a lemon is ordered? One of the rolls, I think Super Mario Bros? The one with cajun shrimp in it... was horrible. I was excited because it said it was topped with habanero peppers. None in sight. We ate a couple of pieces and coudln't eat anymore, our tongues were raw from the salt. They dumped seasoning on top of the roll, you know, like what you cook with or rub on a steak, then cook? Yes, just a ton of salt on top of a roll. It was disgusting, and my tongue was raw for 3 days. The only roll we've enjoyed is the sashimi roll, a bunch of different sashimi wrapped in cucumber, but it's not worth going there just for that. The last time we visited we decided to keep a menu with us, because every time we get a roll, we have to compare it to what the menu says to make sure they gave us the right roll. It always seems to be the right roll, but never as described on the menu, so if you expect to get what you order, don't expect that here. Times before that, we've had to stop a server in their tracks, ask for a menu, and they never come back with one. They really just don't want your business or a tip. The last time we went, there were only a few other people in there and it was mid-afternoon. There were roller carts in the dining room full of dirty dishes, the servers added to the pile, ever searched through the pile at one point, but never took it back to the kitchen. That's disgusting. Once it was time for the check, the server was clearly inconvenienced by having to do something, dropped off the check and said don't worry i'll take care of this for you. I wasn't worried, that's your job. When she brought the check back from running the card, she kept walking by, put her arm behind her and dropped it on the sushi bar, almost falling off, while she kept walking. You can't even set it down nicely and say have a nice day or something? I always tip the sushi chefs in the tip jar, because the servers don't do any work and dont deserve a tip for doing nothing. If you want a beverage, food from the kitchen, a clean restaurant, or any kind of service, don't go here. If you like listening to reggae music while eating super americanized sushi, go here, but may your tongue RIP. read more

Thanks for ruining my daughters surprise sweet 16 dinner. Called at 3:45 to make a 6 pm reservation. Told they don't take reservation less than 3 hours before. I Asked for special consideration. Girl put me on hold, spoke to manager Pearl. Came back told me they are putting two tables together and will hold it for me for 6 pm and gave her my name! Then at 5:50 my guests start to arrive at restaurant and they are told "we don't take reservations". After 4 kids arrive there I call the restaurant.(I'm about to leave with the birthday girl as it is supposed to be a surprise) ,They say "we don't take reservations", I explained my previous call this afternoon, girl said "well we said we couldn't guarantee to hold the tables", I ask to speak to Pearl, the manager who happened to be the owner's sister. She said that she told the girl to tell me that they couldn't guarantee to hold tables and she said that they now have a full house!!!She repeated to me it was a miscommunication. It was NOT. When they got busy they decided to not hold the tables as I was told they could do. So my daughters 16 birthday surprise dinner all messed up. Hey folks, get your "we don't take reservations" "we don't take reservations less than 3 hours before" whatever your policy is STRAIGHT. And most of all don't tell a customer something that you decide to change your mind on and THEN say it was a "miscommunication" . I will NOT spend my money here any longer. read more
