Never had a dish I didn't like! My husband and I visit hooked on sushi at least once a month. We've had their sushi rolls, curries, tempura, short ribs, etc. Everything we've had has been great. The service is quick and friendly. The price is more than fair. The restaurant is clean and inviting. Nothing bad to say! It's not the most authentic sushi place you could find, but personally I don't think that matters a lot. If it looks like sushi and it tastes good, then I'm happy! read more

I have never seen such inexperienced, inept, and argumentative wait staff. First, the restaurant prioritizes takeout orders. The inhouse guests are served after take out are fulfilled. My daughter wanted to go here on her 11th birthday. She ordered a simple Philadelphia roll. They forgot it. I had to question them 4 times. They said the kitchen was swamped. However, the rest of the table was served. My daughter went hungry. I finally had to walk to the sushi counter and ask them to make her roll. They had it out in one minute. Then the waitress talked over my wife and argued with her. By the time my daughter was fed 40 minutes after we ordered, we were all done with our dinner. Then I had to ask to have the no longer needed charge for my daughter's birthday dinner taken off the bill. Once again the waitress argued. No apology, just clinging to the boiler plate excuse about the kitchen being behind. The restaurant was only 2/3 full, and nobody else had to wait. A terrible experience, and shame on the management. We will never return to this integrateful sorry excuse for a restaurant. We will go places that take care of their customers and appreciate their business. I feel badly for my daughter on her special day. However, there was an upside: My daughter Alexis learned a great lesson at Hooked On Sushi Encinitas. We measure the quality of sushi with their Ikura. Oddly, why is it extra salty. In our experience, restaurants use salt to hide the lack of freshness. We said all nigiri but they gave us scallops with Mayo. Can't tell how good it was. Hostess and 3 waitress are more interested in each other than their customers. I hope that's not the norm. Only time they were welcoming to a customer was when it was their friend or maybe another employee. Not likely coming back since it's too far and not worth the service. We really like the food here but there is a need to change District Managers immediately! My wife and I just went in on a slow Tuesday night. The DM sat us in a very uncomfortable wooden booth. We politely asked to sit in one of the padded booths against the wall due to my back problem but were told that they were only for parties of 5 or more. (Worth noting that the entire wall of booths was empty and one could have been moved six inches to accommodate a two-top). We then saw a couple leaving from a padded booth in another section so we politely asked to wait for that one while it was being cleaned. "It will be at least 15 minutes because the waitress for that booth just got very busy!" we were told. We then said it was worth the wait due to my back injury. The District Manager then told us to step aside as we were blocking her path. She then approached us and said we would need to be placed on a wait list if we wanted to continue to wait.. Keep in mind that every time she spoke to us, she was extremely passive aggressive. We said we will leave and she did nothing to attempt to stop us even thought we were polite the entire time! read more

I came here for lunch with a coworker the other day for the first time. I really like the atmosphere and loved the big screen TVs they have. We ordered the garlic edamame which actually turned out to be more like lemon edamame so I wasn't a big fan of that. Next time I'll just order regular edamame with the hopes that there isn't a hit of citrus. I had the crunchy roll and the sashimi roll. The crunchy roll had an eel sauce that was a little too sweet for my taste. But that sashimi roll was pretty tasty as it was sashimi wrapped in cucumber which made it very refreshing. Would be great for summertime. I'm sure I'll go there again for lunch one day probably after the new year. read more

We found Hooked on Sushi to be a great place to get a lunch bento box - as long as you know what to order. We appreciated the variety of choices for lunch and after a few visits, found that unfortunately, those choices could be hit or miss. The basic California and spicy tuna rolls are good, reasonably sized and fresh. The sashimi was also yummy and fresh tasting. We upgraded each time to specialty rolls but found that in general your only roll choices are variations of a larger/upgraded California rolls (when it comes to the 2 or 3 item combo). The tempura was a bit soggy and fairly disappointing. The spicy sesame chicken was fairly dry and drenched in a weird sweet sauce. The ton katsu was okay, but better than the tempura and chicken. We also added an order of the agedashi tofu which was really yummy albeit sweeter than usual. read more

I am still giving this place five stars but I want to talk about my disappointment. They have a fantastic lunch menu that ends at 2:30. I've never been there around 2:30 before until today. But I got there at 2:25. And we were seated and given menus. But by the time she got to us, it was 231 and apparently much too late to get the good deal on lunch. no I don't know why she wouldn't say if you want to get your order in, you have to do it fast. Do you know what you want we only have five minutes. Which would've been very kind. But instead, she shows up to take our order and we're looking at the lunch menu and it's 231 and she says oh I'm sorry, you can't do that, but the food was good although it was more expensive because we ordered off what was called, the dinner menu. Mostly the same thing just a little bit more expensive by five minutes. Or one minute. I still over because I certainly wouldn't want that job. And I didn't complain too much. I just thought it was strange that more attention wasn't given to the fact that we were on it stopwatch. But, like before, very delicious. And of course I will go back. I'll just make sure it's at 2:15 or 220 and not 225. So be careful. Check your watch. :-) read more

Great sushi spot! Such a huge variety of sushi rolls but my fave were the gluten free rolls especially the Encinitas roll! Hubby enjoyed his sushi too which was recommended by our awesome waitress, Andrea. She did a great job explaining all the different sushi options! If we lived in town, this would be our go to sushi spot. But whenever we are in North San Diego, we'll definitely be back!! read more

Hooked On Sushi was just a tad bit above average in my honest opinion... The averageness was primarily attributed to their food and is in no way indicative of their service. The service and the establishment itself is actually quite good; great new clean location and extremely friendly wait staff. The food on the other hand was just average and didn't really pack a punch of flavor nor uniqueness. The rainbow roll was ok, the honey roll was pretty good, the albacore was awesome and the baby lobster roll wasn't good at all. I think they may of over baked the lobster and the lobster to sauce ratio was way off... Don't get me wrong, this place isn't bad, it just doesn't stack up to Tomoyama in Carlsbad or Sushi Ota in Pacific Beach, IMHO. Maybe this was just a anomaly and they're experiencing growing pains, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend certain items here. 5 stars for the service and location, 1.5-2 stars for the food... My favorite sushi place of all time. California dreaming roll is a must try, and the jalapeño poppers are amazing.

Hooked on sushi had decent rolls, I got the shrimp tempura roll and black dragon roll which were okay. There wasn't much taste to them, it seemed really bland. The only reason I gave four stars is because they have an amazing lunch combo that comes with two sushi rolls, miso soup and salad. The miso was really yummy too and hot. I'll probably go back to try other rolls to see if they taste any different. Really good prices for the rolls as well. Customer service was on point even though it was a to go order. read more

Update After reading other yelp reviews with similar experience and the new reviews saying it turned around we gave it another try and I'm so glad we did. Service was amazing, fish was great, really excited that they're back to being a great sushi option Used to love this place. But the last 3 times we've gone the quality of the fish has been subpar, the service lackluster verging on horrible. Sushi is an expensive meal already and If I pay for quality, I expect to get it. Sadly I will not return until I hear they're quality has gone back up. Which is a bummer because this was our families go-to place. read more
