Ok spot I tried out while in the area. Service was fast. Sushi tasted fine, but not a wow flavor. Unfortunately, portions are cut way too big which makes them harder to eat, especially when taking your order to a park vs. sitting at the establishment. I used to love this place but lately it seems like the food doesn't have flavor. The first time we noticed the blandness it we actually wondered if we might have covid and had lost our sense of taste. So we tried a slice of lemon we had on our plate and could taste that, so we kind of knew it was the food. I have to say that I have been coming here for years and have recently been disappointed. For the last year or so their draft system has about a 50% chance of working. One time they have have beer and soda the next time it is down...they really need to get it fixed Permanently. In addition, they often are out of the fish/seafood that I like. Namely aji and Ikura. This restaurant has basically become a sushi roll mill. Which is fine if that is what you are looking for. But don't come here for ambiance, variety of fish or sometimes draft beer. read more

For what felt way too long, we've seen Hooked On Sushi waiting to open, a place I love up in Carlsbad would now be nice and close here in Encinitas. But, it seemed like licensing issues or some other problem kept them from opening their doors for months on end. The sign was there, the hype was building, and we kept stopping by to see if today was the day. And then it happened. Still, it took us a few weeks to get in, apparently they shut down on Sundays, but a fateful lunch at the start of a weekend allowed us to check out a new sushi joint right down the street. It did not disappoint. First off, Hooked on Sushi has phenomenal service. Getting in a bit earlier than noon, the place was a bit empty, meaning we got a seat fast, which shouldn't be a surprise. Our waiter got us our drinks, was attentive, and after taking our initial order, took one look at my lady love's Diet Coke and took it back because it seemed flat. A fresh and bubbly one was on our table about 30 seconds later. C'mon, that's service from people who give a shit. We started with an order of Edamame, the free offer for Yelp Check-Ins. This is pretty standard for most sushi places and it works for others, when they roast the soy beans in something. But, a simple steam and salt gets old quick. It isn't bad, mind you, just something you tend to have over and over when every sushi bar offers the same check in offer. I think this means that restaurants should either off a variety to Yelpers, our I should just shut up, be thankful that I get anything at all for nothing, and maybe not complain when getting something for free. BUT, I DIGRESS! We started with Salmon Nigiri, another staple I order at every sushi bar. It lacked the cool and buttery flavor I hope for, being a bit warmer than it should, and not having much of that fatty sweetness it needed to be great. The same went for the California Roll. As something basic we always tend to get, we've come to be a bit spoiled at having it a certain way that not every place adopts. When there isn't enough mayo in the crab mix, making it a little dry, or the avocado is a tad brown, complaints come bubbling up. So, another example in our eyes of good, not great. For myself, I ordered the Super Mario Roll. With cajun shrimp, spicy crab on the inside and habanero and chili powder on the outside, this roll had a good amount of heat going for it. Avocado and cucumber helped bring some nice, cool taste to the spice, with a good slice of raw yellowtail on top with slivers of lime that cut its way through the fat to make the whole of it very delicious. About the only qualm I had was that some of the lime slices were a bit too thick to eat on their own. But, with six other slices going down without much chewiness, that's easily forgivable and highly enjoyable. Next on the table was a Honey Roll. With shrimp tempura and salmon going for it, it already had a great start. But, the torch they gave on top gave it a nice smokey flavor, and a crisp texture to the crunchies on top, that mixed well with the sweet eel sauce. Very tasty. A Philadelphia Roll rounded out our selections, which I didn't taste any of, but heard no complaints. And our son had the Chicken Katsu Bowl, of which he ate all of the chicken and a little bit of rice. When you have a toddler that generally only eats his chicken in nugget form, it's nice to have him enjoy it when we're out and about. So, very good, not brilliant, but easily enough to warrant us coming back and trying a few more selections off of their menu a few more times. I'm happy that Hooked on Sushi came to Encinitas and hope they last much longer than the other restaurants that have perished in this same spot. read more

Will never order take out again. Wasn't informed at check out that there's a "state law" that doesn't allow them to add wasabi nor ginger unless requested due to it being placed in plastic. It's a pitty as every other sushi place puts the wasabi and ginger next to the roll "plastic free" however they can't seem to figure this out. Was told when I called the restaurant was shocked I didn't know this was a state law. Seems like they should figure out how the rest of the sushi restaurants operate around the city read more

It is our first time here and we ordered the pink lady roll, and the Oceanside roll, the protein roll, and the hooked on sushi roll. The hooked on sushi roll is not on the menu and yet it is the specialty. Go figure. That one was my favorite, followed by the pink lady roll. They actually brought 2 pink ladies by mistake, and we put one lady in a box to go home with us. She is beautiful and will be lunch tomorrow. The staff are very friendly but the environment is a little chaotic which adds to the fun. Everybody seems to be having a good time. We will be back. read more

Very fast service. Matt our waiter was extremely attentive. Good value for money . Hamachi nigiri excellent . Albacore nigiri average. Hirame nigiri not so great same for hotate nigiri. My family and I frequent this restaurant, well, frequently. The sushi is consistently good. We are vegetarian and there are a few rolls we usually get. The vegetarian platter is a good assortment of the veg ones. The prices are low for sushi as well. The last couple of times we have gone our waitress has been Lauren. She is welcoming, helpful, and attentive. Truthfully, she is so good that if the sushi wasn't that great we would still consider going here. I love this place! They have outdoor seating for dine-in customers, and their to-go orders are always ready quickly when I order through DoorDash. I'm a vegetarian, and I'm able to find plenty of options for things that I enjoy. I love the combos, because you can mix and match different things, and build a great meal for a totally reasonable price. I also like that you can substitute brown rice instead of white. Horrible service! We (party of four)got to the restaurant at 8:15pm. We were told immediately when we were seated last call is at 8:45. We ordered everything at 8:30. At 8:45 she brought the bill and requested we pay to close out the register. At 9:05 5 min after closing she asked us to leave. Good for a franchise however ever there is no Japanese ambiance, sort of a generic interior with large screen TV's which is disappointing because having a cultural ambiance would add to a cool experience. The fish is good, the tastes are good but if I want to order sashimi I don't think I would because I don't think the quality of the fish is excellent enough to do so, however fine for basic sushi. Sushi was good. Service was terrible. I went in around 3pm and had placed an order for pickup. There were literally only two tables seated at the time. I paid for my food and then I was standing by the front waiting and the server/Hostess told me I couldn't stand there because it's a fire hazard and that I couldn't stand near the door bc it would block people who would be coming in. I'm sorry - there is no one coming in at this hour and if they do, I'll clearly move and allow them to have a great experience. She made me wait outside. With no one else in the restaurant. Then, I asked her for some gluten free soy sauce when she handed me my order and she told me that each packet of gluten free soy sauce would be an additional .50 cents and since I had already paid she was not going to just be nice and give me a packet or two, she wanted me to get my credit card for $1-1.50. She added that they only give them to people who order gluten free rolls. I guess me ordered only sashimi doesn't count as gluten free. I've never been charged for that sitting at the restaurant, why would I be charged .50 cents per little packet when taking it to go? Either way, super rude and terrible customer service. I've never been back and I don't plan on going back. Left a bad taste in my mouth. read more
