We just stopped by to check out the park while driving around the area. It was a cold, rainy…read morewinter afternoon, and the whole port was apparently closed. It's a pretty area, seemed to be plenty of parking, green space, and a play area. I roamed around Thunder Island a bit too...a wedding venue, the island is lovely with gorgeous 360 views of the river and bridge. It's hard to really judge the Port from our first stop, as it seems that a lot goes on here throughout the year, but our stop-by was simply a quiet spot to stretch our legs for a bit and enjoy some gorgeous views. And for that purpose alone, it was appreciated!

Two times I have been to the Port of Cascade Locks/Cascade Locks Marine Park. Both times were with…read moregroups in mid to late August 2017 to look at the geology of the area. The park has a beautiful view out over the Columbia River of some of the rocks on the Washington State side of the river that have been displaced over time. Both times I stopped here, additional stops along the Columbia River towards The Dalles and towards Portland helped piece together the geologic history of the area especially in regards to the formation and evolution of the Columbia River Flood Basalts. The first visit was the quieter of the two. The second visit abutted the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) Days event in 2017 and a bunch of tents were set up both for that and for watching the Total Solar Eclipse on the 21st of August 2017. Depending on how busy the park is and the size of one's vehicle (for example tour bus versus 10-12 passenger van) parking may be difficult to find. There are expansive grassy areas to enjoy if you want to be active or have a picnic. A restroom building with running water is available on-site.

It was really cool. A great place to stop and visit and tour. NO DRONES are allowed on the property on the Oregon or Washington side. Oregon wouldn't even allow us to enter. We told them weren't going to even take the drone out of the pick up. We were still told no. Washington we were still honest and told them we had the drone but weren't going to get it out. He inspected the truck throughly and let us in. Thank you so much. Because I had a lot of fun. Worth visiting overall…read more The viewing area where you can watch fish migrate through the glass windows was a bit underwhelming. There wasn't much to see during my visit--mostly green, murky water with little visible fish activity. The grassy area near the giant turbine and picnic tables offered good views of the dam, but it was surprisingly full of dog poop. There was enough of it that you had to watch where you stepped and carefully navigate around it to get a good vantage point for photos. Counter staff were very friendly and welcoming and were more than willing to inform and answer questions.

On a rainy or windy day, that is Hood River's thing after all, I suggest you take a break from the elements here. 2) The building, which I dubbed Dracula's Castle, is old brick and stone architecture on the outside, but with all the modern conveniences inside. 3) The kids section is expansive and dominates the lower level. They really made it special with all sorts of special lighting (think magical grotto) and the space is configured well with play areas to really let their little minds wander and imagine all sorts of interesting places. Serious bonus points for the Reading Theatre with carpeted steps instead of chairs for the audience. 4) Participates in the Oregon Library Passport Program - http://www.librariesoforegon.org/node/30. So if you are like me and love to borrow books or videos when you travel, if your home library also participates, it is an easy process. 5) Location. Not just the views, but also located conveniently in downtown Hood River. Wander down the hill to read your book in the park on a sunny day and then grab a scoop of ice cream from Mike's. This is a climb! Especially with my two bad knees. I'm glad I took the challenge because the views…read moreof The Columbia River are so gorgeous from above, but it's a one and done for me! Start the climb at the Horse Brew Pub and catch the first of six steep, cement steps. I was there on a sunny day but if you do the stairs in rainy weather, make sure you have appropriate shoes. no flip flops in any weather! The stairs - with hand rails - climb up to the neighborhoods with houses on the bluff overlooking the river. Lucky people! You wind up then gradually loop your way back down. There are some little, and I mean little, neighborhood parks and some have a bench to rest on while enjoying the view and stillness. I definitely had a rest. Once back in Hood River there are countless things to do! So many breweries that also serve hard cider, shops, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, wine tasting, ice cream - all walking distance and concentrated on three main streets, Oak and Cascade the most popular.

The Bridge of the Gods... now that's a name that carries some weight…read more And it should because long before this steel beauty ever stretched across the Columbia River Gorge, there was something else here. A real, honest-to-God land bridge. A massive landslide hundreds of years ago choked the river and let people cross on foot until the river fought back and tore it apart. The Native legends say the gods themselves had a hand in building it... and destroying it. Fast forward, and now you've got this 1926 cantilever bridge about 1,800 feet of steel hanging out over the Columbia, standing roughly 140 feet above the water like it's got something to prove. Now here's where it gets personal. Years back little younger, little dumber, definitely more ambitious I ran a marathon. And by "ran," I mean I survived it with forward motion and questionable decision-making. But the moment I remember? Crossing this bridge. No crazy wind that day. Just... calm. Which is rare out there. You're up high enough to feel it, but not fighting it. Just steady. You look out, and it's cliffs, rock, river, and sky all layered together like somebody took their time building the view. And that's the thing about this bridge it sneaks up on you. From a distance, it's all structure. Steel, angles, purpose. But when you're on it? It's exposure. You feel the height. You feel the space. You realize real quick this isn't just a crossing it's a moment suspended out over something much bigger than you. There's history under your feet. Legends in the rocks. I just purchased a new vehicle and was stranded on side of freeway entrance. I couldn't reach…read moreanyone by phone so I put my thumb out O was only a few miles from home. In my same hand I was holding a fistful of cash. it was pouring down rain and no one would stop to give me a ride. A skamania County Bus driver stopped and got me off the freeway entrance and was able to get me a couple blocks from my home.
