As a transgender and lesbian couple, we have our reservations on seeking medical attention because it doesn't always feel safe, but when my partner's fever rose to 106F, we had no choice. To our pleasant surprise, from the ER, to the interim room, to the final room that we stayed in for 2 nights, our sexualities, and gender identities did not seem to cause friction of lapses in care. We shouldn't have to consider this, especially in the wake of an emergency, but this is the world we live in. If you are a part of a marginalized community and have reservations about medical care, specifically in a hospital, I can confidently refer you here as a safe place. I hope that we never have to come back, but in the event that we do, I will be rest assured. This hospital is in a convenient location, close to many restaurants if you can't stomach the food, the hospital is easy to navigate and it is very clean.

And if the only thing they could fix is a can that won't open, they'd be the University of Canopeners Hospital. But they're not. This Hospital looks really fancy and has had a massive revamp since the first time I was here, or feels like it anyway... and the part that you probably are most familiar with unless you have been in here a lot is the spectacular bridge for pedestrians right over the roadway. The inside is less spectacular. Bad hygiene for a hospital. Insane wait times. Some pretty unfriendly people. But they do see everyone and take care of everyone - as best they can - and I appreciate that. Our wait was close to 2 hours but it could have been worse, I suppose.

Surgery team is excellent and where the hospital really shines is in the ICU. That team was incredible, with very compassionate staff. Thanks for all you did.

To get the charge removed, you cannot mail them a letter because they will throw it away. You MUST call the phone number where it says "YOUR ACCOUNT IS DELINQUENT, TO AVOID COLLECTIONS CALL 816-404-8188". Then they will tell you every time "It was a system error". Then the clerk will lie and pretend that they already fixed it before you called. Actually, the clerk just removed the charges WHEN you called. Right after your next appointment, they will strike up the whole thing all over again with new charges that you don't owe: YOUR ACCOUNT IS DELINQUENT, TO AVOID COLLECTIONS CALL 816-404-8188. I have filed complaints to the federal government (CMS.gov), the State of Missouri Healthnet Department, and to the return address on the bills: University Health Physicians, 2310 Holmes, Suite 800. The MO Healthnet Division confirmed to me it's illegal for them to do this, that they are not allowed to keep making mistakes like this. As federal law allows, when the charges hit $500, they can report it to all three credit bureaus, which will lower your credit score and cause you to have strange hassles when you try to rent an apartment. Also, you will pay a bigger security deposit for your apartment if you can even get the apartment, you will pay higher interest on a Pay Later retail purchase, and you will have trouble getting a good credit card if you need one. So in other words, you must call them AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN to get their illegal system errors cleared up.

My sister received care when it was time for medications, but otherwise staff were invisible. Never was she given mouth care or help getting a bath. She ate almost nothing for breakfast on Saturday so I didn't order another meal for her the entire weekend. The Saturday's breakfast tray was left on her counter until Monday morning's nurse came in her room. Nobody kept track of what she drank and nobody seemed to notice that she hadn't eaten all weekend. I would help her turn on the nurses light when she was hurting and needed to be turned. It was common for her to wait 45 minutes to have anyone begrudgingly answer her light. At one point they used a plastic turning sheet under her to move her into position. They let that slick, hot, plastic sheet under her for a full day, ignoring her complaints of how hot and sweaty she felt lying on plastic hour after hour. It was nearly impossible to get any nursing care. No one in leadership made rounds. Of course, no nurse did any type of hourly rounding. PT worked with her once and determined she was too weak to work with them, so nobody even worked to get her to sit up in bed. They knew so little about her that when it was time for her to be transferred to a rehab facility, they ordered a wheelchair van to transport her! The transporter came & suddenly six nursing staff were in her room to transfer her from her dirty bed to the wheelchair. My sister became dizzy and nauseous sitting up for the first time in a week. My guess is that the staff had no idea that her slowness was due to physiological reasons but thought maybe she was being lazy. One young woman screamed in her face to comply. My sister died at the rehab facility a week or so later. I pushed to get her back there because I knew she would get the care she needed and be treated like a human being. It's been two and a half years since she passed. I wish the nightmare she experienced at Menorah would pass from my mind. My only regret is that I felt so out of control with nobody in leadership to help us get her the care she needed. My hope is that nobody else will suffer at the hands of the Menorah nursing staff like she did.

The OR staff was kind and patient with me during the short time I was awake. Post op, it took a while to get into a room. The updates to my support person were somewhat lacking. I know the hospital "isn't a place for rest," but clustered care should be a priority. As an example, 0030 vitals with a 0145 routine lab draw followed by an hour wait for Tylenol on a fresh post-op patient is not ideal. It was also at that time that my RN noticed the BP taken several hours earlier was low and needed to be rechecked. My provider had stated in a pre-op appt. that he would be the one to see me if I had surgery at RMC. His NP, whom I had never met, was the only provider I saw during my stay. She was very kind and provided me with options for my care. I wish I had known prior that plans had changed. After deciding I preferred to go home instead of staying an additional night for pain control, my discharge was rushed. Passing a patient off to a "discharge lounge" and having them provide less than 5 min of general education, without a support person present, is not beneficial to the patient. My discharge instructions also did not have any info on my potential high-risk post op complications. The staff as a whole were kind and seemed to be caring. The housekeeper did a great job cleaning up my room. Dietary came in and patiently went over options with me. The PCT's and RN's worked very hard to provide quality care when able and available. The charge RN who rounded on me was also pleasant. I am lucky to have medical knowledge and a list of HCW I can call with questions. If you must be inpatient, I recommend having a family member present at all times to prevent some of these issues.
