It is a small…read morebut creative piece of public art that adds a lot of character to an otherwise ordinary street corner. The design is colorful, detailed, and does a great job of turning something simple and overlooked into something interesting to look at. It is one of those little touches that shows how much the city cares about public art and making everyday spaces more visually appealing. It is a quick stop, but definitely worth pausing for if you are walking or driving through the area. The only reason it is not a full destination is simply because it is a smaller piece and does not take long to see, but it still leaves a positive impression. Overall, a cool and creative addition to Clearwater's public art scene. Easy 4 stars.

Tampa's George Sugarman sculpture is the big, bright, swirling burst of yellow, black, and white…read moremetal that locals jokingly call the exploding chicken. It was originally installed downtown in the mid‑1980s and later moved to its current home on Channelside Drive. George Sugarman himself was a prolific, boundary‑pushing American sculptor known for vivid color, pedestal‑free forms, and a restless experimental streak. Officially titled "Untitled," it is about 36 feet tall with layers painted in a bright yellow, black and white. There is no pedestal and no single viewing point, which makes it a perfect installation for a traffic roundabout. The sculpture was commissioned in 1985 by NationsBank (later Bank of America) and installed at the corner of Ashley Drive and Kennedy Boulevard soon after. In 2011, it was donated to the City of Tampa and relocated to the roundabout on Channelside Drive, where it now serves as a gateway for visitors heading toward the port and Ybor. George Sugarman (1912-1999) was an American artist whose work defied easy categorization. He was known for vividly painted metal sculptures that broke from the tradition of bare steel modernism. It was originally installed at the Hillsborough County Public Library in 1977 but moved here in 2016 as part of Tampa's public art project. It is by Philadelphia-born artist Barbara Neijna who now lives in Florida. The modernist sculpture consists of two striking red steel structures, each a rectangle and an acute triangle and they stand 18 inches apart. This design could be a ritual entryway, asking spectators to interact with the space in a symbolic way. Or a literal way since you can step between them easily. The bridge red color provides a flash of color to the Riverwalk. [Review 334 of 2025 - 1989 in Florida - 23896 overall]
