The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas (aka Santa) is one of Newcastle's more interesting…read morearchitectural attractions, though it must be said that it is much smaller and more modest than e.g. York Minster, Ely Cathedral or Gloucester Cathedral. Most of the building hails from the 19th century, although the church itself goes back to medieval times. The style is very familiar for anybody who is even remotely interested in the architectural fashions of Victorian times. The church organ is very impressive, as is the intricately carved marble pulpit. The cathedral has a wooden roof. The elaborately designed stained windows are also worth a look. Expect to spend about 30-40 minutes at this place, i.e. if you're not there for prayer or a musical or church event. You can take non-flash photos freely. Entry is also free. Look out for the bust of Lord Collingwood he was married at the cathedral.
