But to find yourself as a pub opposite the Ballardian nightmare that is Gablafa Interchange with a recently opened Wetherspoon's smack bang in the middle of is without doubt a nightmare. The Three Horse Shoes has had this problem on its hands for almost a year now and is fighting it admirably. It has chosen the fronts of sports TV and community feel on which to wage its war. The former is signified by the large LCD TVs dotted around the bar and the large banners advertising both Sky Sports and ESPN. The latter is denoted by the friendly staff, the banter they have with the customers and the general cosiness feel of the place. It also keeps the impact on your wallet to a minimum with Brains' Famous Five for £3.85 meal promotion, Fosters at £2.30 and Brains IPA at £1.85. There's a darts board, a standard It-Box and occasional live music. They also have some bizarre high seats from which only basketball players couldn't dangle their legs and feel like a five-year-old. I was expecting the worst when I finally made it across Gabalfa Interchange, but what I found was a friendly, clean, and cosy community pub.

My other half loves the place, mainly because he can have piles and piles of food and i'm quite happy to go along so I don't have to cook a roast myself. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, I just don't like having to wait ages for a table and then stand in a queue to get my dinner- kinda reminds me of being back in school. I don;t know if other branches are always this busy so maybe i've just been unlucky when i've been here. It also annoys me that the car park is always full and I usually end up having to wait for someone to leave. I do like the selection of food but there's nothing quite like freshly cooked, homemade food and this is bit too manufactured for me. I will be going back, and it'll be pleasant enough. Its in a bit of an odd place really and right on the middle of the student area which is why I guess I had never been tempted to go there sooner. Went for an early dinner, the food was nice but not outstanding. I liked the relaxed atmosphere of the place and all the comfy looking leather sofa's. It would be a lovely Sunday place hangout I think. Prices are probably aimed at the students so its fairly cheap and there seems to be lots of events going on. The portions are huge and come out on big oval plates. There are smaller versions available of most meals if your a wimp. But I can't wait to try the Meatysaurus - 20oz steak with all the works. Yum. Sunday lunches are pretty good (not carvery though) and they're currently running 2 for £10 on the regular size and 2 for £12 on the big plate specials. During the week (Mon - Thurs I think) they're running 2 meals for £8 on a selection from their menu. From the rest of the menu there's plenty to choose from ranging from light bites and sides to main meals and desserts. I'd love to try the 20 Onion Ring pole. A collection of 20 rings - on a pole - served with dips. Damn my stupid allergy to them. This place is great for families and people of all ages.
