Basically, it's a pub not trying to be something else. It can get a little 'lively' in here on the weekends and the cheap drinks may well add to this element. That being said, as Long as you are keeping yourself to yourself or not being stupid, it has never posed a problem for me. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to drink at the windmill, but if you are passing and in need of refreshment, or wanting a game of pool during the quieter times, you could do worse than frequent this pub.

You would be hard pressed not to find a parking space and the same applies to seating within. The pub provides a cozy bar including a pool table if you fancy stopping by for a swift pint, the 'Keymer' bar for a more relaxed beverage and a large, yet homely dining area if you have come to eat. I will come back to the food in a minute. In the summer, the expansive secluded garden is perfect for children to bomb about, or for those summer nights when the weather is pleasant (of course, a bit hit and miss in this country!). The menu is wide ranging (check the website for a current list of dishes) and offers traditional, quality pub food. A lot of the produce is locally sourced and cooked to order. Sometimes this does mean that you wait a little longer for your meal, but the wait is worth it in such a nice environment. This is a great pub to consider for a Sunday roast, especially if you live in Brighton and have access to a car. They will happily take bookings and also cater for private parties in the dining area. I would have liked to see a wider range of ales on tap, but they do try and keep a local brew or two in rotation. Aside from that, expect your regular range of alcoholic tipples on offer. Many moons ago, in my youth we used to walk to the Thatched from Burgess Hill for our Friday drinking sessions and I would still make that walk! I guess the one negative is the location if you are without transport, but if you do make the pilgrimage from the station, I believe you will be glad that you did.

Still, it is a spacious building and there are a lot of tables for dining. They have a good range of beer and ale on tap also. I would recommend this as a good Sunday lunch pub and they serve generous plates of food with all the trimmings. At times, it can get busy though, so you may want to consider reserving a table in advance. Situated where it is, you will need a car to get there unless you are in the area. At the same time, the location makes this an excellent pub to refuel if you are on the A23 en route to a distant location. There is a lot of parking available and you will usually find a bay to pull into. The staff are amicable and they have waitresses to handle food service. As far as pubs in Burgess Hill go, this would be up there in the top 3 inn my humble opinion.

Once there, the path to the front door is lined with a dense 'hedge' of lavender, providing an aromatic and sensual welcome. Very clever... Although I'm not a fan of gastro-pubs generally, I'll make an exception here, partly because it's still quite a nice pub despite the emphasis on food (although the space inside for drinking only is a bit limited), and partly because the setting is so peaceful. They do a couple of well-kept and reasonably priced interesting real ales (served straight from the barrel), several local ciders and they have very extensive wine and whisky lists. It's possible to have a light snack rather than go for the full-on dining experience: the 'Blackboard Menu' has smaller dishes between £4 and £10, including a five-cheese Ploughman's lunch for £8.45. The full menu is more expensive, but is highly regarded - expect to pay about £40-£50 a head, including wine, for three courses. A fixed-price lunch menu is popular with business types, at £15.95 for three courses. The web-site gives lots of detail on the food. The atmosphere is a combination of rustic setting and professional service: I found the staff willing, knowledgeable and friendly. The pub is also part of the good ale route. Prices are reasonable as the pub is a little way out of the town centre and they have deals on house doubles, if spirits are your tipple of choice. They also are pretty keen on their pub quiz circuit and you will find the pub busier when they are hosting a night. Aside from that, it can get a bit local friendly and you may get the odd glance if you are a stop in customer. That being said, it will usually end up being quieter if you want a weekend drink to catch up and chat rather than fight your way to the bar.

I would particularly recommend the platters they offer (a meat, seafood and burger one) which come served on a large wooden chopping board, reminiscent of a Mediterranean Mezze. The decor is now a lot of lacquered wood and tasteful paintings. Since the refurb happened after the smoking ban, the pub also maintains a better condition than some establishments that have soldiered on through the legislative change. They serve a respectable range of beers and ales on tap and have a well stocked spirits selection. I would possible not consider the railway for a night out with a group of friends like the old days, but then again I'm a lot older and hopefully a little wiser now and on that note this pub is perfect for a few beers and a nice meal rather than a lot of pints and assorted shooters. Being close to the station doesn't hurt either and the garden is pleasant enough to feel sheltered, even though the pub is situated on a busy road. Good for a Saturday afternoon meal when you aren't wanting the poshness (and price) of a restaurant.
