After hurricane Ewa, the personality of the beach changed. Ewa brought in a lot of rocks. The waves had become timid. No more bodyboarding and bodysurfing. Maybe one day I'll enter the water once more here... after 39 years:)

The Island of Kauai had a long run producing sugar cane, but that has faded along with the government subsidies. Now, the island is seeing the land being converted to coffee plantations. But back in 1965, this site of a former Sugar Mill was designated as a Historic Place. 20 years later, this monument was built to commemorate the history of the area. The monument includes contributor plaques as well as six informational plaques that tell all about the sugar industry and local history. But the eye-catching focus of the monument is the full-sized depiction of numerous sugar mill workers cast in bronze by artist Gordon Fisher in 1985. The native people are shown performing certain tasks, some standing, some seated. It is a beautiful piece dedicated to capturing the look of the island people at the height of the sugar trade. Our day walking adventure trip on Kauai is about to come to an end. Kalena Park, I like this park! We utilized one of the picnic benches to listen to our music, hydrate and catching up on social media, cell phone break! I noticed the park is very clean, ( except for the restrooms) loved the huge planters & trees! There's a basketball court and small playground area, about 7 bright picnic tables, parking is along the side and back of the park . I am surprised to see no homeless camping out but more chickens here! We were the only ones at the park until later a family arrived and eating their take out lunch. My other half went to use the restroom before he left, which looked clean from the outside but it was really dirty and messy inside. Kalena Park was part of a renovation project back in 2019 and Līhu'e Loop is an ongoing project to promote physical activity in Līhu'e's town core on the island of Kaua'i. Over the coming years the Līhu'e Loop Community Action Group, coordinated by Get Fit Kauai, endeavors to use information technology to generate and sustain interest in exploring the walking tours that start & end at the centrally located Kalena Park. At each point of interest on the Self Guided Audio Walking Tour, you can listen to a different story. Learn about Līhu'e's unique heritage, living culture, and aspirations for a vibrant future as you go! The Lihue Loop is a fun activity to do for kids, adults & families ! What a fantastic idea! Next visit to Kauai, when staying longer than a day I will add this to my Kauai to do list!

There's so many memories about this place that I wish my son could have experienced it like I did. Where this small baseball field is located, I remember it being our school cafeteria with a small playground. It had A basketball court, swings, seesaw, monkey bars, and a sandbox. The neighborhood center that is located below the park, is where we would have parties, summer fun, sleep overs with youth groups, sport events, and a place where senior citizens still meet up every Tuesday's and other days of the week. On the same property, was our elementary school. "Kaumakani School (Kaumakani Tornado's)" To me it was the best school I ever went to. It is now Kamehameha Pre-School. Not all of the rooms are occupied, but it still looks the same from when me and my sister was attending there. With all of the sugar cane that surrounded the school no longer there, all we can do is remember the past and speak about it in the present. Plantation days were the best days of our lives.

The Old Marine Camp Rd is the unmarked road just north of Kauai Beach Dr and south of the golf course. If you're a tourist without a 4x4 taking Marine Camp Rd after any type of rain it's a bad idea. There are gigantic mud puddles and ruts all along this road as it is now defunct a sugar cane haul road. Back to the beach, Range's is located in the middle of the long beach stretch that goes from Kauai Beach Resort to Lydgate Park. It's a good 3 mile stretch of beach that is mostly accessible by 4 wheel drive although you can walk it from either end. This isn't the most scenic beach on the island by far but it's secluded and you can pretty much do what you want here as long as you don't piss off the locals. Mind you, if you do piss off the locals here, you're screwed. Seriously screwed. The reason for the 5 stars: 4 Wheeling on an East Side Beach. Fishing, there are several good fishing spots along this beach. There's also a few nice offshore reefs for diving as well. No ask where, OK. Surfing, although this beach rarely gets really good there are usually some waves here from the almost constant tradewinds. No Cops, well I've never seen one and I've been coming here for 20+ years. A few words of caution: The water here can be extremely deceiving as sand bars are constantly shifting creating strong undertows and rip currents. The locals here can get kinda crazy, its a good place to roll bowls if you know what I mean. Portuguese man o' war, they are everywhere here so pay attention and if you see them on the beach and you decide to go in the water be prepared to get stung.
