After the big winter melt brought on by the early hot weather, we discovered a pool of water in our basement - thanks to a thin but long crack in the foundation. I've heard horror stories of getting foundation work done and how much it can end up costing, so I talked to a couple of people about it and the both recommended Con-spec, saying that I could do the work myself. At this, I laughed! I'm not the most handy type of guy, and the thought of doing this kind of work frightened me, but I was assured that Con-Spec could help out. I went to their store on Argyll and explained my situation. The helpful dude working there let me finish and then ask very specific details about the work I had to do. He then went over a couple of options and told me which one was probably the best. He then demonstrated the solution he offered (glue and seal some plugs along the crack, then come back and pick up the gun to inject the sealant) and assured me it was pretty easy....and he was right. I was able to pull off the project with just a few hours work over the course of a couple of evenings - and who knows how much money I saved by doing it myself!?!? Granted, it will take a heck of a rain storm to put my fix to the test, but it looks like it worked great (and with the grading I did outside) we should be able to weather the next bout of storms (fingers crossed). The only downside it Con-Spec is their hours - they aren't open late and not at all on weekends, so if you work regular hours, you'll have to juggle things to get there while they are open.

Well after my experience today buying lumber I will only be shopping here for my lumber. The staff are so helpful and available to assist. Today's haul was a pick up truck full. Well over 100 pieces, the yard staff were very helpful in assisting with loading. They guide you around the yard so you don't drive aimlessly and waste time searching and searching. Oh and don't be fooled from the size of this place. They have a massive selection! Now for the best part, after price comparing with Home Depot these guys were considerably cheaper. This decision saved me at least $150. You can call ahead and they will pick your order if you have a trailer to drop the order on. They will only do this if you have a trailer though.

Well, I have to say that the Golden Spike experience was averagely priced. ~450 bucks for 140 2x4's (10 ft). I also have to say in good conscience that this particular batch of lumber licked a sizable pair of nuts. You are going to get bad pieces in any batch but the sheer number was slightly irritating when attempting to find a sexy little number to use as a top/bottom plate. The gentleman at the front desk was helpful and even helped us hand-bomb the lumber on to the trailer... which was the consequence of our order, already an hour behind scheduled time of pick-up, having not yet been assembled, apparently fading into the mists of short-term memory and necessitating a handy bit of exercise. No big D, except that I somehow managed to assault myself with a veritable spear of a sliver. It literally entered one side of my forefinger and exited where the skin overlaps the nail, all 2 inches of woody glory. Before my diction goes even further and more suggestively amiss, I will conclude this clearly enthralling review. It can be accurately said that if you know of no other lumber distributor in somewhere-west-of-Edmonton, you could go to Golden Spike, and you would get the job done. It could also be accurately said that if you are slightly overweight and/or exceptionally tardy, your experience upon pick-up could be exactly what you needed. 'Night.

Renovating our kitchen, we decided to get new counter tops. Since we were already working with…read moreRona (that's another story), we were pointed to Graniteworx. They sent a person to measure and we were told that the large "L" shaped counter would be one solid piece - but if it had to come in two, the cut would be at "sink centre" so that it wouldn't be noticeable. The counter top arrived in two pieces with the cut right in the middle of the counter work area- VERY NOTICABLE. We sent it back and asked that they redo it as we were told it would be done. After waiting for a few days to hear back (their install guy told us we would be hearing from the manager within an hour of sending it back....nope!) we were told that this is the way it has to be - we have no choice in the matter. After it was installed, they then used what looks like a brown glue or cement between the pieces....and the top is white with pink hues...so now the cut is even more noticeable and looks horrible. We contacted Rona (because they pointed us to Graniteworx) and they took pictures and agreed it didn't look like the quality product we paid for, and said they would contact granitworx to see if it can be fixed - and of course we still haven't heard back.

My full kitchen plan was provided to Cascade along with the details that I was in a second floor condo. All went well until not long before the install is scheduled to occur they send me a final plan to sign that shows my island quartz being cut in half. They assumed there was a freight elevator in a 4 storey residential condo and never bothered to ask. There is not!! So they just decide the right thing to do is cut it in half. They refuse to bring it up the stairs and tell me it weighs 900 lbs which is an exaggeration because they don't want to bring it up the stairs. I offer to pay for a crane or something to lift it to my balcony and they tell me they cannot help me with arranging this. They make no efforts and offer no suggestions as to where I might be able to seek help with this as I am trying to problem solve. When I arrange this on my own they communicate with the contractor that I have hired, paid and arranged for on my own and give him so much cause for concern he understandably backs out. I decide to change my order to an even lighter weight so that they can bring it up the stairs or maybe hire a professional moving company to assist. Two days before install is scheduled and all the trades are lined up behind them they back out. This company should have attended the site from the beginning or asked key important questions about the location and access to my condo from the beginning. If they couldn't accommodate the job they should have let me know this so that I could hire another company. The manager promised to call me back and instead he made one of his office staff deliver this news to me.

Sergej came by and took measurements, made recommendations about the best sizes of drawers that would fit the size of island I wanted, and took the details of my current kitchen. He was able to create and install a custom island with exactly the size and features I wanted, and found a finish that matched my existing kitchen but cost less. He was also able to include a small shelf unit on the end for cookbooks. We had a little confusion over my request for a wooden butcherblock countertop, which should not be varnished -- apparently an unusual request, but Sergej was very helpful in following up and sorting out the miscommunication, and I now have an actual butcherblock countertop that I can use to roll out pastry and pasta, on a great looking kitchen island with drawers, shelves, and a built-in garbage/recycle drawer. The cost for this ended up less than some other places I got quotes from and the quality is excellent. I would definitely recommend TSN Cabinets.
