This place has way more to offer than just the old school, they have a summer camp which is really neat. Also they hold a writers workshop and other arts and crafts conferences throughout the year. They have a five week camp for dyslexic students which allow them to be social and learn to get along with the other children. Also on this campus there is a walking trail that is brand new and has not even been open for a week to the public for them to tour. This historic and very popular settlement school in the US offers educational services to those interested in Appalachian literature and folk arts, offers conference and retreat facilities, educational services for children with dyslexic characteristics and their parents. They also do arts programming for students in Knott County. On the school site there is a nature trail, take a walk - relax and enjoy the nice surroundings. Hindman Settlement School is a major historic and cultural attraction in Knott County. This is a very unique school that is well maintained and classes are still offered at the school throughout the year. The experience at Hindman also includes a beautiful craft store and museum across the street from the school, which has a plentiful variety of gorgeous traditional Appalachian crafts. This Settlement School has an amazing history. My group of 20 people and I stopped at this hidden gem while passing through Hindman. This place was established to provide elementary education to children from the Mountains. The school is still up and running and well maintained. This place also hosts events like Appalachian arts, writers and culture workshops by Appalachian writer, authors, or artisans. read more
