I put down a deposit for this pool last year. Given the COVID situation, I inquired over a month ago about reversing charges on my membership this year since I know I will not be using it, and the price is not cheap. I have been a Member of Highland Park Pool (HPP) for several decades. It has always been a pleasant place to relax and swim. The Serene Sunday adult only swim was a bonus. All of the good will has dissipated due to Covid and the Board's treatment of Members. Communication has been abysmal and most of us hadn't any idea what the Board intended to do until they held a virtual Town Hall on June 3rd. Here is some key information for everyone to know. Only half of all Members have paid their annual dues. The pool can't cover its expenses, open or not, when Members don't meet their financial obligations. The Board president said the pool will open on June 29th, but she wasn't able to provide any specific as to what that experience will be like. She said that Members could choose inactive status which requires 20% of the annual dues. But, there would be no refund -- the remaining $480 would be held by the Board and applied to next year's dues. That announcement wasn't supported by Members and it isn't supported in HPP's Bylaws. The Board has lost trust with the HPP community. Despite requests for the latest financial statement and the budget (which are supposed to be available to Members under the Bylaws), this information has not been shared. This leads to speculation about the financial health of HPP. This may be the time to give up Membership which requires the Board to reimburse the Membership fee and the annual dues. If Members charged these fees and have no luck getting a refund (a likely scenario), they can file a dispute with their credit card company. It's sad that a long time staple in the community has fallen to such depths. It will be a miracle if the pool survives. An institution is only as good as its leaders. read more
