Geilo Hotel - View from hotel room as the sun was coming up, after an overnight dump of snow. Alpine ski runs in the distance.

Went here on a deal for the weekend. Geilo is very easy to get to on the train from Oslo and only…read moretakes a few hours. A short work from the train station and town centre, the hotel was very quiet with friendly staff. Board games in the bar and lounge area, but if you don't speak a bit of Norwegian you might struggle reading them. All staff speak perfect English however so no problems there. They have a room for skis but not a drying room, which I asked about, which was quite disappointing. Geilo is a ski town so I would have expected them to have one. Ended up drying in the room on the heater which was fine. Speaking of skiing, they provide information regarding the ski bus to the various alpine runs surrounding Geilo. Hotel room was clean, comfortable bed, but pillows quite thin and lack a bit of volume. Bathroom is clean and has everything you need. Rooms look newly redone and are modern. Wifi works well and is a good speed. If you get meals included it is buffet style and decent enough quality and variety. They have a sign in the restaurant that if you have allergies they can cater for you. All in all, a good stay and I would definitely come back again.

Geilo Hotel is a budget hotel located in the ski-town of Geilo. The lounge area is kind of cool,…read morethe service was good, and the rooms are relatively clean (although you can start to see the wear and tear of being a ski resort). For the included breakfast, you can either choose the breakfast buffet or a la carte items, the latter being recommended by the staff. While breakfast was okay, they tend to cook with a lot of grease so keep that in mind. Hey, I can't complain about a cheap included breakfast, especially in Norway where everything is ridiculously expensive. Do note that this is a tourist bus hotel meaning you may run into a bunch of tourists. When I went there were 3 buses of Chinese tourists staying there...which made the hotel quite loud. Anyway, the price is right and you'll be hard pressed to find a cheaper hotel in the area that isn't a dump. 3 stars.

The common areas remain nice and comfortable, but the guest rooms are in sad need of an update. Perhaps Dr. Holm's Hotel is more lively during the winter months, but I stayed here for a rainy summer day in July and the hotel felt like a ghost town (or scene from a horror movie). For as large as the complex is, I saw maybe 5 or 6 staff members total for the duration of my stay. The real redeeming feature of the hotel for me (besides the gorgeous drive through the glacier to get here) was wandering the hallways, getting lost in the various wings, and admiring the artwork. The walls are littered with beautiful lithographs and engravings, and the many bars and sitting rooms are decorated with taxidermy and large paintings. For the hotel alone, hold your breath, but I would have given it [a low] 3 stars based on the charm and feeling as if you've walked into the time of The Great Gatsby. +1 star for the modern high-end spa, which was a unexpected, and a very pleasant surprise. "Dr. Holm's Spa" is an Elemis Official Spa, same type of spa featured on many upscale cruise lines and makers of some of my favorite everyday products. The addition (which is open to hotel guests) includes a large indoor pool, showers, and steam room featuring Shiseido products. Sadly, spa appointments were full upon my arrival but I hope to return to this beautiful part of the world one day and take full advantage of all the spa has to offer.

Looks like a Castle when you walk past or drive up to it. And entrance is kinda nice but thats it…read morereally, every other thing I experienced and saw was mediocre at best. The room we got was supposedly for a family but Ive stayed on 2 star hotels with better rooms. Hairdryer didn't work and the bathroom was like I went back in time to the 60s. Felt like I was at my grandmas. Not great and not what you expect of a "4 star" hotel. Then I decided to try out the pool/sauna area. The Sauna was not working and no way to turn it on. Also didn't get any help from staff when I asked. Pool was mediocre, not great. Kinda dirty. I was looking forward to the Hot tubs most of all but both the one inside and outside didn't work, well rather no water in them and they were half way covered half way open. And looked really dirty. Gym was closed as well. Bar was honestly the only great place, slow service but they had beer and showed football which saved the Bar experience. Honestly think they're just going on outside looks and hope that most of their customers are blind or old. Wouldn't call it a 4 star hotel nor was is 3 stars imo. Would not come back.
