SportsWorld! Party time! Excellent!…read more Well, what a gym. To begin with it's built inside a beautiful old milk factory, with original bolsters, bricks and beams. On the ground floor, you enter what appears to be a restaurant. Honestly, I get the impression that people come there for a bite or a drink whether or not they are a member of the club, really tastefully done, but ions away from the juice bar counter in my gym of yore. The staff is extremely friendly, no pushy salespeople to worry about. There is a big, clean, spacious changing room digital code locking lockers, a tanning bed (if that's your bag) and a sauna. I'm really into the idea of the steam bathing and sauna-ing. I was prepared for the fact that this is Europe and it will probs be fully nude. I was ready. However, I got a bit nervous when I saw it was co-ed. I didn't know which door led to what and in brief, I lost the courage to prance around poking my head in strange places. No matter, I'm going to ask for a floorplan and a code of etiquette. Wink. One floor up there is a squash (court?), a spin room, a general workout room and a special, slightly warmed very zen yoga room. (TOOOOONS of classes). Up top you have cardio galore and weights. I believe you get a free introductory training session, as well as periodic check ins to see how you've progressed and to keep you motivated. Oh and they're open til midnight. I'm writing this as I procrastinate to get in there tonight. But I signed up for my week trial, and had zero hesitation about becoming a member, after day 1. Let's hope I have an update for you in three months with pics my new bangin bod and my ghetto booty. Wink. (Have you ever googled "Squats before and after"?)

And the lady Marijn or whatever is her name, you are rude not the customers, the customers apparently are tired of your staff and yourself.

So I usually go - well i went there twice :) - to the location at Wibautstraat and for a change I…read morewanted to try out the session at 9.15 AM (!) of Waterlooplein's gym. Body Balance for lazy birds like me. Who in addition are not crazy about those worms those early birds so much enjoy. Starts out great, as the sound system is not working. Here I am, grumpy and all, getting an improvised class in whatever by - wait for it- the manager, who by the by is not a Mills instructor. I mean she is very friendly and all but I didn't sign up for this, i signed up for some "good morning D, just stretch and don't break out a sweat". No this was a proper wake up call. A 4* for effort though: the manager/instructor was ever so friendly, it's still a stylish gym, smaller though than on Wibautstraat, and the guy at the counter was also quite helpful and very friendly. (Take notes, angry wibaut birds...) Anyway I guess in the end I did have a proper workout i needed so badly, humbug. I am hoping to have a proper lazy class tomorrow though. Ps here you can wear your skanky tank tops (more perverts at Wibaut maybe?) Oh and maybe i overlooked but it would be great if there was a cleaner and paper cloth in sight to clean those sweaty palm and butt prints (people, sit on your towel, please...)

Before going to my first class at Rocycle, I had a conversation with the friend I was staying with…read more-- a German woman who'd been living in Amsterdam for awhile. I told her it would probably be a lot like SoulCycle. She was like, "What's SoulCycle?" This explains a lot. Rocycle reiterates SoulCycle's playbook in a way that will be surprising to Americans; SoulCycle of course has _many_ similar competitors in the States, but because it (SoulCycle) is so famous and defining the competitors try to have their cake & eat it, too: they want to trade on the success/phenomenon that SoulCycle is still most-associated with starting, of this particular approach to spin classes, while also _clearly differentiating_ themselves in some way. Rocycle doesn't have that problem. It's just SoulCycle. The lights. The yoga vibe. The scripts of self-empowerment and self-ownership that the teachers throw out there; the pacing and structure of the workouts, focused very much on pedaling to the beat and then breaking down for different pace sections, then the arm section, etc. The thing is: I liked it more than SoulCycle. I think it's a little better at it. The teachers I had were particularly good; the vibe was particularly good; the facilities were excellent. I mean so basically look tl;dr -- if you're in Amsterdam and looking for a spin class and you like SoulCycle you might LOVE Rocycle. Enjoy!

The studio is immaculate, they provide shoes, towels, and have showers. It's very modern and clean, and they have a juice bar in the studio. The instructor I took was Hern, and he was amazing! The music was lively, fun, and the entire workout was engaging. It's a lot of core and upper body while cycling, similar to Soul Cycle. It is all rhythm riding as well, which i love. They have an online deal for first time visitors, which is 8 euro for one class or 18 for three classes. If I lived here, I'd definitely spin here. The classes were crowded as well, so make sure to book in advance. If I'm ever back in Amsterdam, I'll be back!
