Amsterdam has a number of art-house cinemas that show both Dutch-language and foreign films, but Het Ketelhuis is probably the best: a number big screens, modern seating and projectors, excellent sound, a diverse and accessible programme, and an excellent bar for before and after the film.
The staff are friendly and accessible, and generally extremely knowledgeable about their current showings and the state of the Dutch film industry.
It's worth calling ahead to find out whether there are films showing in your favourite languages: great for homesick people from all over the world, Brazilian, Chinese, Australian films seem to be regularly shown. Normally these films will have Dutch subtitles.
I like the bar a lot: it's open about 30 minutes before the first showing and until the end of the last of the day.
The space itself is an old gas processing facility, so think Victorian-industrial space with very high ceilings and regular rotating displays and art events. read more
