For the 2000 World Expo that took place in Hannover, the Expo Management chose the ugly train…read morestation in the city of Uelzen in Lower Saxony (just half way between Hamburg and Hannover) to be restyled by famous architect Mr Hundertwasser. In the beginning the officials had some doubts that the new additions could not be removed, so they insisted that any change to the building could be rebuilt.
Now the city of Uelzen has a new attraction. Typically Mr Hundertwasser uses very odd and colorful components, so that by now the train station is one of the most beautiful mid-size train stations in all over Germany. The restrooms are the most used ones in German train stations, for photo taking. If you go inside, you will know what I mean.
There is also a nice café, so many visitors come and stay there for a few hours. You can really sit down there and chat with some friends. On most other comparable train stations it is virtually impossible to do so.
Conclusion: nice place to visit.
