Thank you Yelp, for opening my eyes to this hidden gem in plain sight. I'd actually come here years ago for takeaway beer (given that it's a Japanese restaurant, they have a great selection of craft brews, even some ciders and Belgian lambics). Upon returning for sushi with the family I was pleasantly surprised to find a vast menu of tasty and unique rolls with high quality seafood. There's a huge selection of cooked Japanese food as well for the less adventurous, including good teriyaki dishes. This is a happy compromise for people who want sushi if their date or family doesn't. Staff are friendly and responsive to requests, like no fish roe on the rolls, extra sauce or ginger. Drinks from their relatively full bar are yummy and cheap too. There is often a wait on weekend evenings but they do take reservations, so call ahead. They are open late, until 11pm most nights, so stop by for a quick bite, to take home an order, or even to takeaway some drinks. I recommend any of the specials, and I'm particularly fond of the Angry Tuna, the American Dream, the Sumo Roll. The Jalapeno Yellowtail with chef special yuzu sauce is delicious. Oh, and the portions are HUGE. Heaping plates full of fish and generous size rolls full of the listed ingredients...these portion sizes make other nearby sushi restaurants look like they're catering to ants. Sushi Novice to Sushi Snob! It's officially happened, I'm now a sushi snob. I have standards now and I didn't even know it. I've been spoiled by all the top notch sushi destinations in Denver. Harusame is a good sushi place for being in the suburbs. Offers a good variety of specialty rolls, sashimi, basic rolls and teriyaki items for the people that can't handle the raw fish. My Mom raves about this place, how beautiful the sushi is and how delicious the plum wine is. While visiting home she wanted to come here together and enjoy a sushi boat. I've never even scene one of these before, but I was intrigued. You have two options with the "boat", the Lover Boat for 2 or the Titanic Cruiser for 4. There were three of us dining and we decided on the Lover Boat for 2 with an added order of edamame. The Lover Boat also comes with two bowls of miso soup. Everything we received was solid. The Boat was average. By ordering the boat you relinquish your right to choose. You receive very basic sushi, sashimi, and rolls, nothing special or unique here. The freshness of the fish was just average, but the prices were on par with higher end sushi restaurants. The boat is worth it from a price perspective if you were going to order what's on the boat separately. If you're looking for the fun stuff you'll still have to order items separately. We also tried the Crème Brulee and Tempura fried ginger ice cream for dessert. Crème Brulee is not authentic, not that we expected it to be. It was still creamy and tasted of vanilla and fresh berries. The Tempura ice cream was fun and a highlight for the end of the evening. I was disappointed with the service received this evening. Friendly, but drinks took anywhere between 15-20 minutes and once we were ready to order we had to flag down our waitress. Not worth the wait in my opinion. For the neighborhood this is probably the best choice for sushi. As for me, I'll satisfy my sushi cravings in Denver. read more

I've been using sushi from this place for couple of years now It's been always good and decent Today (Black Friday) I ordered $60 worth of sushi and got a gross mess of rice and fish with some disgusting sauce poured over it ! I wish the pictures were clearer I lost my appetite should I say that went to pick it up as told in 25 minutes and had to wait another 30 minutes to get this!!!! Very disappointing. Harusame isn't the easiest place to find if you haven't been there before. Upon arriving, there was some confusion about parking-- limited street parking with the R100 lot across the street (with about 20 or so spaces). We hesitantly parked in the R100 lot around 7:45p on a Friday evening. (The short of it-- no tickets, not towed. R100 lot might be the best option but may not be.) We were greeted immediately and seated quickly at a table for two near the sushi bar and the register/supplies kiosk. The restaurant is sparsely decorated, but it's still pleasant. On the way to our seats, we spotted a large beer carry-out section, which is an interesting touch for a sushi spot. The menu is fairly large and features a very affordable $1.50 miso soup, a big list of udon and other noodle dishes, and numerous typical and special sushi rolls. One qualm that I had concerns the fact that many of the sushi rolls added tempura or fried items. When I think sushi, I think fresh, not fried, and this limited more than half of the special roles on the menu. Also, there was a surprising lack of tobiko (fish roe) on the roles-- a mainstay of many very good sushi restaurants. Not finding any sushi rolls that pleased me, I opted for the chirashi (a variety of sliced raw fish with rice) for $18.00 and a bowl of miso soup. My girlfriend opted for two special rolls-- the Crazy Hamachi and the American Dream. The chirashi was well worth the $18. Three slices of different types of tuna (hamachi, ahi, and fatty), three slices of escolar, three slices of fatty salmon, egg custard, and imitation crab. Of the fish, the hamachi was the tastiest, but I had to think that they weren't all as fresh as possible. Not bad, but not as rich or flavorful as possible. Of the two rolls my girlfriend ordered, the Crazy Hamachi had good flavor, but the inside of the roll was a mushy mix. This led to a somewhat unpleasant texture. The American Dream roll had a mushy tempura filling and a crabmeat salad (shredded imitation crab with mayo). Squishy wrapped with squishy-- too soft and mushy again. Bottomline, Harusame is a decent Japanese restaurant and sushi bar (not BYOB), and have a carry out beer selection that is pretty good (lots of craft beers and imports). The chirashi was fairly good, and the sushi roll flavors were tasty but lacking in textural balance. I think there are better sushi places in the area, so I would be pressed to return to Harusame. Just note that the parking is limited to the Main Street - Lancaster Ave - so if you're not good at parallel parking or are protective of your car not being side swiped, this might be tough. (You can park across the street though...) and this review was for an experience during lunch on a weekday. Pros - quick service (seated quickly, served food quickly) - fresh and tasty food - cheaply priced - comfortable setting - spacious, not noisy, soft seating, good music, polished interior - friendly servers - complimentary green tea - have to ask. - has Shirley temples and mochi! - open 7 days a week and late - salmon teriyaki was sweet and salty - vegetable tempura and shumai was perfectly cooked - lunch special of two rolls for $8! - the spicy tuna and eel with avocado were delicious! - they don't skimp on anything- you won't leave hungry! OK, so this place does have a bit of a neighborhood feel. There is a bowling alley down the street, a pizza joint next door. The decor won't really impress your date, if that's an issue, but if they want the best sushi on the main line, this could be the spot. Maybe it's the glare of the lights from the beer refrigerator section in the corner, but it just lacks a bit in ambiance. They have put a fish tank in front of that section and it illuminates nicely. The clientele on this Friday did seem a bit "local", though - plenty of takeout orders, a family with their kid sitting on the table next to us - but a good number of people obviously looking for some fresh sushi. If you want something in your belly fast, go ahead and order the miso soup - mine appeared shortly after I ordered it, and it did not disappoint, as simple as miso soup is. My brother ordered the gyoza and they were pretty standard, though good also, arriving a few minutes later. We arrived fairly early this night, and for some reason our service was a bit slow, even with the place only half full - must have been the takeout orders, and our waitress did apologize without being asked. For their part, the wait staff was very attentive and pleasant. When the sushi did arrive, the wait was quickly forgotten. The highlight for me was the American roll, a special on the rotating menu - similar to the Washington roll but with lobster salad on top. Also excellent but for half the price was the Smoky roll with smoked salmon, avocado, and mango. The Scorpion roll was also fresh and delicious and quickly devoured. My brother had the Honey roll, sweet potato tempura roll, Futomaki roll, and Salmon Hanging on Top (?) roll. All the sushi was very fresh, inventive, tasty, and in good sized portions. For desert we had the banana tempura with ginger ice cream, and no, the ginger ice cream wasn't overpowering thankfully, it was a very subtle flavor I could deal with. Delicious! Our first time here today for my 17 year old son's bday. The special sweet potato tempura shrimp appetizer was pretty and so tasty! The spring rolls were yummy, as was the edamame. The sushi lovers in our group loved what they ordered: the Lover Sushi Box, the James Bond Roll and Alaskan Hand Roll. The seafood soup and miso soup were good. Two different fried rice dishes were fresh and good. The tempura banana and ice cream, and the fried ice cream were perfect and not too sweet. Our waitress Sanny was sweet and attentive. Ok for suburban sushi in terms of the amount of meat in the roll but it was poorly lacking. I got the Pocono roll which is listed as a mixture of shrimp and crab meat - you could taste the imitation crab in the first bite. The roll was hefty but it was minimal shrimp if there was any. The orange roll was spicy salmon with fresh salmon on top. The "fresh" salmon was defrosted and paper dry - no moisture to the fish. The spicy salmon roll itself was fine and I would rather reorder that which is cheaper then purchase the orange roll again. read more

On a busy intersection in Ardmore, this is a good choice for local Japanese food. It has a full bar and is dark and calm. Parking can be a bit tough, the street spots tend to fill up during lunch. The menu is extensive and offers a lot of choices! I had a special Roll (mummy roll) which was good, but not great. It felt a little clunky. Not my favorite, but maybe I just selected a roll I didn't love. However the Katsudon was excellent and it was a generous portion. I'd order this again! Really like this place. read more

My sister and her boyfriend have been raving to me about Harusame for some time now, so I finally decided to check it out with them one Friday night. As other reviewers have mentioned, parking can be an absolute mess. There is a small train parking lot directly across the street from the restaurant, but that was jam packed the night I went there. We ended up finding some street parking with a short walk back to Harusame. When we walked into the restaurant, it was packed! This isn't really surprising because it's a small location, but people were waiting in the wings to be seated, which is a great sign of good food. We were able to grab a spot at the little bar inside and start with some drinks while they were getting our table ready. They have a pretty decent craft beer selection in the back by the kitchen, which made me happy. I did try one of the cocktails and wasn't blown away - too much fruity froo froo and not enough liquor for my taste. Next time, I'll stick with beer. Once we were seated, the waitress came right over to ask if we had any questions about the menu. For a starter, I went with the kani salad. It was a large portion, which is always nice to see, and had a nice flavor but I like my salads with some heat so next time, I'm going to ask for it to be spicy. The fish was sooo fresh. I mean, if they can get a kani salad right, I'm excited to try the entrees. I ordered the seafood udon - a noodle soup with fresh salmon, scallops, and shrimp. It...was...delicious! The broth was flavorful, the noodles were cooked perfectly, and the fish...I can't say it enough....SO fresh. The scallops were my favorite part. They looked like they were split open and grilled before being tossed into the broth. I was a happy camper! Good food, good service, and ridiculously good prices! hadn't been to harusame since pre-renovations until last weekend. first of all - wow! i wouldn't have even thought it was the same place...what was once a plain cafeteria-esque interior (which led me to only get take-out a few times in the past) is now quite warm & inviting with parque wood flooring and walls, lacquer tables and a well-stocked bar - perfect for a nice sit down meal. the bf and i each got a bento box lunch special. he chose the spicy salmon roll/salmon sushi from combo list #2 which comes with a bowl of miso soup, a house salad, and a choice of a spring roll or shumai. i got the tofu teriyaki from combo list #1 which includes a bowl of miso soup, a house salad, a california roll and shumai. when we placed our orders, i asked if i could get an avocado roll in place of the cali since i do not eat crab; the server said this was no problem. we also asked for brown rice instead of white. not wanting to be "that" customer, i chose not to request a substitution for the shumai (mini shrimp dumpling for those who don't know) and planned to give them to my bf. much to his dismay, and my delight, either the server or the cook clearly recognized that i was veg and surprised me with a side of tasty vegetable gyoza instead! prices were reasonable, service was prompt and friendly, fish was fresh (so i was told), and we were so satisfied with our meal, we forgot to check out the huge selection of take-out beers. i will definitely be back! read more

I love this place-- it's my Godzilla Sushi (http://www.yelp.com/biz/godzila-sushi-san-francisco) stand-in since moving back to the Philly area providing decent, inexpensive sushi. The best part of Harusame is the ridiculous drinks they make. Haven't had an Alabama Slammer in awhile? Get one. They have a mixed drink list with everything you can think of, most of which come tarted up with umbrellas and cherries-- gotta love it. If you're not in the mood for mixed drinks, you can head over to the beer cooler where they have a pretty extensive selection. Grab a bottle, and they'll put the single on your bill. Voila-- variety! After loads of sushi and silly drinks, I like heading over the Head Nut to buy random candy, chocolate, coffee and other foodstuffs in bulk. Harusame has gone through many transformations in recent years--From Sapporo House, which was mainly just a good place to get beer in the area, to Lotus Cuisine, which seemed to last all of five minutes, before transforming into a full-service Japanese restaurant with a beautifully redone interior. Still a great stop for quality take-out beer, Harusame has really stepped up the sushi over the years. If I'm in the suburbs of Philly, this is the only place I will get sushi anymore. There are a few other good sushi spots (Sampan Inn, for example), but this is by far my favorite. Everything is fresh, the eel is some of the best I've had, and the the special rolls are awesome. Try the Volcano Roll, the Ocean Roll, or the Sexy Roll, to name a few. The names speak for themselves. They don't do too much here with non-traditional ingredients like cream cheese--I'm personally not a fan of "Philly Rolls" because the flavors and textures just don't mesh and don't make sense in sushi, which should be light in texture and ultimately have a light but complex flavor. The staff here are quiet but friendly, one of the guys here let me use his cellphone to call AAA when I locked my keys in my car and also had a dead cellphone. My friend and I always joke about the funny banter we have with a few of the staff here, because the interaction is always somehow amusing. So the overall verdict: if you want good sushi or need to grab a good 6 pack of beer, stop at Harusame. And in the words of one of the staff, I will close with this: Ok, bye bye. read more

So I walk in for a quiet dinner by myself on a work trip. I saw a few negative reviews, but didn't think anything of it given how many people have had a positive experience here. But y'all must be crazy to think this place is good. Don't bring me my soup and tell me the tempura is coming out soon. Why would you make me wait while I stare hungrily at some noodles? No one likes too-crunchy vegetables in their udon soup. Broccoli, store-bought white mushrooms, and snow peas are a cop out. Don't use the same chairs at the sushi bar that you use at your tables. Sushi bars are chest level. No one likes being infantilized by having to lift their shoulders and arms just to be able to grab their food. Their soy sauce and/or fish made me feel sick. This was NOT fresh. I got the $23 sashimi platter and was presented with salmon that was fairly gelatinous. The tuna was almost melted, and tasted like shark. I would call it almost mercurial, but there's nothing interesting about bad food. It's disingenuous to call yourself a Japanese restaurant when you can't even make an udon bowl right. My server was so polite and checked on me the perfect amount of times. Not too little and not too much. Appetizer was the Satay beef skewer. Cooked perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning. It had me wanting more as I sipped on some Saki while waiting for my sushi to arrive. I had the Firecracker Roll. Scallop Tempura, avocado inside topped with spicy lump crab meat, fried potato and finished with red tobiko and wasabi tobiko. The flavoring was so perfect that I didn't want to dip it into the soy sauce! I mean it was seriously bursting with flavor! I finished the meal off with the Steak Teriyaki. I think I am in love... This Japanese restaurant is one of the best so far in the area. The service is amazing, the place is clean and comfy, and the prices reasonable. This used to be the Lotus Inn which was a bright, flourescent-light joint with a good imported beer selection and a few tables to an intimate, finer-dining establishment. The menu's expanded, too. Agadashi tofu, miso soup, steamed vegetable gyoza, and spring rolls...Bento boxes include a salad & miso. It looks like on the new menu they have an extensive sushi selection as well as a pretty extensive drink menu also at reasonable prices (try the blue martini or the blue margarita!) I was here twice in one week after never having stepped foot in Harusame before. The first time the service was horrendous. The second time, it was flawless. Still giving this place five stars. The fish is fresh, the rolls inventive, and they even have gluten-free soy sauce. From the outside, it looks like a little shack, but inside Harusame is a bustling sushi joint with lots of regulars from the lower mainline area. Full bar. I go to Harusame all the time for take out beer and then decide to stay for some sushi... Or is it the other way around? The sushi here is really fresh and well prepared with generous portions. They usually have some special rolls that are amazing and the basic sushi standards are delicious and inexpensive. It 'has a comfortable and spacious interior that makes me think of a more expensive Japanese restaurant without being pretentious. Oh yeah. Did I mention that the staff is super-nice? Second I had the Salmon Shogayaki. Another absolutely delicious dish. The salmon was cooked just right and the sauce they use for the dish is delicious. I've had sushi also here and it's about as good as any sushi you can get. This place is BYOB as well which is a bonus. If not they have a nice selection of beer, wine, and even sake. This is probably one of the best sushi places in the area. The staff is extremely friendly and the sushi is AMAZING. They have some pretty delicious and expensive options in the menu, but also some very affordable ones. For a decently price and delicious meal, get the Philly, Alaskan, and New York roll.
