Strange name, even stranger shop. (Incidentally, the building was built in 1847)…read moreNewsagents-come-alternative clothing store 1847even sells much more for the devilish than the angelic. From black nail varnish, smoking paraphernalia, flavoured tobaccos, pipes, bright hair dyes, tutus and then the usual ciggies, choccies and drinks. The confused quirky concoction on offer here seems to be related to the close proximity of Quiggins (which it has relocated from). If 1847even is Heaven then Quiggins is the God of the alternative. A must on the route to a Halloween party or you know, in the more frequent/likely event that you need a new lighter or whatever- but if I so fancied I could purchase some fuchsia pink dye, studs and a black-netted skirt to re-live my teens in proper style.

Wow, this place brings back some happy memories. This place used to be situated in the long lone…read moreand sadly missed Quiggin's boutique, which was a fantastic haunt for many people my age as we grew up in Liverpool. Sadly, Quiggin's has now been turned into a wanky suit shop by the Liverpool One developers, snatching the place of over 25 independent retailers and the memories of thousands of Liverpool's public. It still has the same staff that served me when I was a fourteen year old with orange dyed hair running around Quiggins in a baggy Nirvana hoody and Fubu jeans..drunk! This place is an Aladdin's cave for stoners and those who like weird and alternative bits and bobs, they sell bongs, skins, pipes, incense sticks, sweets, and loads of different herbal remedies and flavoured tobaccos. They also sell UV paint, weird clothing and BB guns! FANTASTIC!

Every morning I watch this shop roll past the bus window and wonder how Horsley and his son (who I…read moreshall call Eric for no reason) managed to set up such a business. It doesn't even look like it occupies a real building. The tiny newsagents looks more like somebody left a shipping container at the side of the road and the Horsleys (both the father and Eric) pounced on it and started selling papers and sweets from inside. They say the key is in the location and at 7.20am, despite the bleakness of the neighbouring boulevard, this minuscule shop is always busy with grim-faced commuters in their dying seconds of freedom. I don't know if it was Eric or the Horsley man of the house (probably called Geoffrey) who was on till duty when I called in but he wasn't exactly chatty. I don't mind though. Philosophical silence is something I've come to expect from Eric and Geoffrey. That's so like them. What a crazy couple of guys.

Horsley & Son Newsagents is situated on Speke Boulevard and is housed in what I can only describe…read moreas a shed. It is very small and looks like it might be temporary, but it has been this way for years. The newsagents, although very small, is crammed with an excellent variety of stock. They sell tobacco products, crisps, chocolate, sweets, soft drinks, magazines and newspapers. Everything is sort of crammed together but the man behind the counter will help you find whatever you need in no time at all. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They welcome you warmly as soon as you walk in and are happy to chew the fat with you. This newsagents has a strong community feel.
