Unfortunately New Ulm was a bit of a mixed bag with some destinations educating and entertaining us while others left us wanting more. The Glockenspiel Clock was one of those things that left us disappointed. Maybe it was the overcast day. Maybe it was because the visitor's center had already crushed our dreams by telling us we were there a week too soon to see the New Ulm Municipal Band play in German Park (despite being told otherwise months before while planning our itinerary). Never the less, we made our way to Schonlau Park to watch the noon program of the Glockenspiel. There are 3 programs throughout the day at noon, 3pm and 5pm. It lasts about ten minutes and there are benches in the park so you can sit and watch the performance. There are also signs about about the history of the clock and the meaning behind the different characters. It's interesting to see and learn the history. But not as interesting as I thought it would be. My rating for the Glockenspiel falls between 2 and 3 stars. After about two minutes of the performance I had seen enough. But it might be better to see on a nicer day or during one of the local festivals when there is a lot more going on nearby.

I walked into this center while attending a conference in the Saint Paul hotel across the street. I was so pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the inside is, how nice the two museums (a musical instrument museum, with amazingly beautiful old pianos, and a woodwork museum with a great collection of carved wood items) are, and how friendly and helpful the staff/volunteers were inside the center. And all of that is free to the visitors! What a wonderful opportunity to see the region's history and culture , and meet some friendly locals! I can't recommend this place enough!

To assure my consumption, my mother always showed me the Green Giant label when she was cooking. It opened my world to vegetables! Today, I actually collect Green Giant ads and other paraphernalia as part of my pop icon collection. Now...I happen to have two girls who are HUGE fans of the Little House on the Prairie books, and I love all things MN Historical Society (we're members, so we didn't pay to enter the Harkin Store) so for my little group who was already somewhat in the area, this was a great pit stop. The volunteers are lovely and knowledgable and the gift shop is fabulous. Do you happen to know who sews the homemade bonnets that are sold for $10? Get that grandma an Etsy shop! (although tell her to keep sending a few to Harkin for the girls who make the journey)

Kudos to them for spending their days there and for dressing the part, but they were not in character at all. The lady in the store was knowledgeable but crabby. When my husband and I walked along side the house to see if there was more to the complex, she followed us suspiciously. Needless to say, the nine mile drive from New Ulm was pretty but not worth it. It's not the biggest museum ever, but for the low cost of admission, it was worth walking around to…read morelearn about the biggest thing in history to have happened in the area. I would say Northfield is known for the defeat of the Jesse James gang and the museum gives great history to learn more about the event. Since it wasn't terribly busy the day we went, we were able to really look at and read everything. It was kind of neat that you could walk through the actual bank that was attempted to be robbed. There is also a rotating display, which happened to be about a local man who got to go around the world in an Airstream for a year. If you have 5 bucks and an hour to spend, it was well worth the time and money.
