Street parking is sometimes hard to find, but we got lucky and caught an open spot where we left our car for the three days we were here (just remember to put money on the spot for those non-free hours). The rooms and beds were very comfortable, and we had a pleasant balcony with large windows that we opened at night to cool the room. Our hosts were extremely helpful, greeting us by name on arrival and helping us plot out our days and nights in the city on a provided map. Totally will be back for another pinchos adventure!

However, our experience at Zenit has been far from satisfactory. Right from check-in, we encountered issues with our key not working multiple times. This was frustrating and not the kind of welcome we were hoping for. We flew in from an other portion of our vacation and arrived at 11am and was told check in is not until 2pm but we could leave our phone number ,when the room is ready they will call us, no call ever received. Return to the hotel at 4pm expecting to waltz into our room. They had the same 20 min problem in finding our reservation they had at 11am and the room still did not have the extra bed ready at 4pm. Furthermore, despite specifically requesting a room with privacy and a view, we were given a room located just a few doors down from the elevator with a view of a neighboring apartment complex (photo attached). This was not the romantic setting we had hoped for on our special anniversary trip. We noticed a few days before our arrival date that larger rooms, with a bathtub vs just a shower, had become available and asked if we could book one of those when we arrived, at our added expense. We were told no, even after we explained we were willing to change rooms mid booking of our 7 night stay. We booked directly through the hotel and it seemed they were very unwilling to make this stay even the slightest bit special. Additionally, in all our years of staying in San Sebastián, this is the first hotel that did not even acknowledge our anniversary. No congratulations, no special touches in the room - nothing. While I know it's small every other hotel has given a piece of cake or chocolate and bottle of Cava. It was disappointing. The room did not have coffee (a little crazy in Spain )but did provide tea bags. We used the tea bags, expecting them to be replenished, but after 4 days, they have not been restocked

This hotel has its own parking and is built to a very minimalist style and decor. It was the first hotel on our trip that included a guest survey in our hotel room asking feedback on our service, which was greatly appreciated. It appears to be very newly built. Even has an outside patio for some parrillada/BBQ. The staff was very helpful and the front desk has a lot of information for tourists.

We both had closets and we could shut the door between the two areas when we needed privacy. We stayed in Room 111 which had a balcony with chairs and a fantastic view of the water and the promenade. The windows were also fantastic. When they were open, we could hear the lively noise of the promenade but when they were closed we couldn't hear a thing. The bathroom was also very nice with a bidet attachment to the toilet. The toilet even had a motion-activated night light. The shower was a little difficult to use without flooding the bathroom. The breakfast buffet was outstanding with lots of pinxtos, fruit, hot food, cold food, and pastries. My friend is a vegetarian and she found plenty to eat. One night we ordered room service and the food arrived within 20 minutes and was very good. The front desk people were also very helpful answering questions we had. The only negative was that we couldn't get the coffee maker in our room to work.

I didn't get to check out any other hotels in San Sebastián, but find it hard to believe we would find anything better than the Maria Cristina.

A part of San Sebastian History…read more Hotel Maria Cristina first open its doors on July 9, 1912. The first celebrity to visit was the Regent Queen Maria Cristina after whom the Hotel was named. The building was and is a magnificent piece of architecture designed by French architect Charles Mewes, who is also credited for designing the Ritz hotels in Paris and Madrid. During the Spanish Civil War that started in 1936 the hotel was temporarily occupied by troops sympathetic to the revolution, but after a few days they surrendered to the local militia men. Fortunately the building was not damaged much in the process, but if you carefully look, you may still see a couple of the bullet holes on the walls outside. The hotel is an exclusive five-star hotel with a price tag that is too rich for my blood, but one can walk in and sit at one of the available tables in the lobby, order a coffee or drink and admire their surroundings.

The scenic resort town is on the Bay of Biscay in Spain's mountainous Basque Country. There are two popular beaches also that one can enjoy either on the Bay or on the ocean. These beaches are bordered by a charming Bayfront boardwalk, and popular restaurants with creative chefs. Anyone that is not a seafood lover will have challenges eating in these popular restaurants. Most of our time invested in this fabulous city was in the Old City where we enjoyed pintxos and at one time an awesome cheese cake for desert. San Sebastián was surly well worth the visit. The magnitude of people and their energy draws out the dynamic appeal and absolutely wonderful culture of this delightful city.
