Amazing and very talented employees and volunteers with impeccable information about everything inside the museum. Admission is $10 for anyone over the age of 12 that is not a veteran or active duty. Highly recommend you stop in and don't be afraid to ask questions even though you're not allowed to touch anything. You can still ask if they can show you something and explain it further. I think Schools should definitely take advantage of all the great artifacts that are in this museum and they should request services for their school to offer tours for a school trip especially for US history. I had contacted Rhode Island Advocacy for Children after 3+ years of trying to get my son the…read moreplacement he needed.   His school could not provide the services my son needed and was covering up the fact my son was way behind, he was been labeled a disciplinary problem even though he was the one bullied and was physically abused several times by other students.  The last attack happened a month ago and left him with a severe concussion and hearing issue.  My son's school district had broken the IEP & 504 law repeatedly and tried to cover everything up and always made excuses or blamed him.   Rhode Island Advocacy for Children went far and beyond what I had expected and provided 100 % fantastic service.  Joanna Scocchi and Linda Kortick ,  came with me to my IEP meeting and they were successful in working with the school to change my son's placement to where he needed to be!  With Rhode Island Advocacy by my side they were all of a sudden doing the right thing!  My son is now on the road to recovery with much stronger education supports - something that I had tried to get from the school for years and years!   If it was not for Rhode Island Advocacy for Children I don't believe I would have gotten a private placement from the School district and I would have ended up removing my son from school permanently and just given up!  Thank you both for working so hard.  I came to you desperate, hopeless, frustrated after years of getting nowhere and I entrusted you with my son's education and safety.  You made sure you took that to heart as if my child was your # 1 priority!  To anyone who needs support: honestly believe you can trust Rhode Island Advocacy for Children because they do have a heart of gold and don't charge gold prices. Their fees are reasonable because I called other advocates and talked to a lawyer about this before reaching out to Rhode Island Advocacy for Children.  A lawyer that specializes in IEP & 504 laws gave me an idea of what they would charge for my son's case and it would have been easier and cheaper to pay for the placement out of pocket then fight the school!  If you tried to fix the problem alone like I did and got nowhere, do not wait 3 years and call Rhode Island Advocacy for Children as soon as possible  If you didn't start fighting yet, it would be easier to call Rhode Island Advocacy for Children first because you'll probably be ignored and your child is the only one to suffer ! We completed an application online and left a payment. One of our close friends was then contacted as a reference. Next thing I knew we had a home visit scheduled which turned into Spike's first night at our home and a member of our family. It was an easy process and we have a kitten that is very easy going and great with our kids (but not so great with our shower curtain but that's just catnanigans!) 2022 was my second time at their powwow. We had such a great time. There have been some updates…read moresince the last time I attended. They've added wooden benches surrounding the center stage dance area. They've also added a shaded area for tribal elders with seating. I thought that it was nice to highlight the elders and give them comfortable and unobstructed views of the center stage. Many many food options. We tried some empanadas that were filled with shredded chicken. Those were meh. I think it needed cheese or veggies or something. The fresh squeezed lemonade stand was a big hit. I got 3 over the course of the day. $4 for plain lemonade, $5 for strawberry or blueberry. Kim's food stand has amazing options and I really loved the succotash. I got 2 bowls of that. I really wanted to try the Sly Fox Den Too but they didn't get set up until after 3pm. Many shops with amazing crafts like wood carving, wampum jewelry, paintings, clothing and more. Lots of stalls selling toys, trinkets, housewares. Most stalls accepted credit cards. The Taino tribe made their debut this year and they had a nice booth set up with a lot of handmade crafted items from their culture. One change I noticed was that the tribal elder used to blow smoke into the faces of the crowd. This year the smoke blowing was reserved for tribal elders. This year did seem like there were more people in attendance. You can apply to get a camping spot (tent/rv). Admission was $6 adult and $4 children under 12. They offer shuttle service at the health center (both the new one and the old one) if parking on site fills up. The tribe was very generous with the PPE bags that they gave away. The bags contained: tissues, wipes, bottles of hand sanitizer, bottles of hand soap, hand outs warning about Covid and also tick bite safety, disposable thermometers, Covid tests, and lots more. Also the bag was a really nice heavy duty canvas bag that can zip up. Perfect for a day trip or a weekend bag. I highly recommend experiencing the powwow in person. It's so rich in culture and history. The Narraganset tribe has the longest running powwow.

This community vegetable garden is located in an area that could be easily accessed from Peacedale,…read moreWakefield or South Kingstown. The story of this garden goes back to May of 2008, when the Town of South Kingstown, gave to the community a half acre open field on the grounds of Broad Rock Middle School. Over the next twelve months, construction and preparation of the garden took place. One of the main features is that at SKCG, there are water lines running off the main line to supply water to each row, and which provide access to water for each individual plot. ​SKCG was established as a non-profit with the State of Rhode Island and it is run year to year by an elected governing board, and garden by-laws ensure smooth and consistent operation. ​Today SKCG has 45 plots, for use by individuals and families, with several plots set aside for use by the middle school and to grow food for the Jonnycake Center Emergency Food Pantry. ​The garden has been committed to organic growing since its inception, with no pesticides used at the site. The community also does on-site composting, share tools, seeds, plants, and expertise. The members collaborate with two local beekeepers who have two active beehives adjacent to the fenced-in garden area. I go there often since my husband has one of the plots and he loves getting his hands dirty. Depending on the time of the year, we get beautiful lettuce, snap peas, carrots, tomatoes, herbs, garlic, and much more. A great community gathering place ! ​

I have to compliment the people who curate/run the gallery for their bold approach to art in an area that is so damn conservative in approach. They got some balls, fer sure. This is better than most of what you'll find in Providence, and would fit in well in any hip, urban art area. The fact that it's in a beach community dominated by tourist schlock is amazing. And I didn't find the prices high at all - some of the work would easily be triple the price in Boston or NYC, so show some love to this place and the talented roster they've assembled. I had been here years before when some friends had showings here, but now its a bright, clean, professional studio! A great crowd, with an awesome DJ spinning old skool hip hop. Who doesnt love a little OPP while checkin' out some dope art!? The front is like a little gift shop, with books, t-shirts, wallets, etc. Being that it was the opening for this show, there was wine and ice cold PBRs ready for our consumption. I love me some art, dont get me wrong, but daaaaaamn, this stuff was pricey. We are Narragansett people, not NYC. Just sayin'. Over all, I was pumped to see so many young people out and about and being part of something that other people worked really hard for. Its nice to see that there's a solid art community down here that doesnt consist of just pictures of lighthouses (no offense to you lighthouse photogs!).
