I stumbled on this place three years ago when I was visiting Marietta and took a drive into WV. The house is breathtaking from the outside. The admission fee of $10 is well worth the price when you consider what it takes to upkeep the house and all that is in it. The self-guided tour begins with a video of the history of the house. You can take as long as you want to walk around the house and then sit outside on the porch or walk around the grounds. The workers inside the house will tell you as much as they know. It's interesting to see that the items in the house are original to the house and NOT gotten from other homes or antique stores. This family saved everything from letters, to books to run the plantation, trinkets, toys, and furniture. Well worth a visit here. I especially enjoyed reading the few letters that they had copies for reading. I hope that they will eventually scan the letters and compile them for reading as they reveal history through the eyes of a family in a very troubled period of time. read more
