I have not touched math for over 10 years so it was nice for me to have a math tutor for the GRE,…read moreand I think Shahin knows her stuff and is a good teacher when you have her attention. With that being said, I am sad to say that my experience has not been the very best. It was hard for us to set up/ and confirm appointments because I work and she was busy (she had a baby a couple months ago, so I think that triggered a lot of it). But I had to do 6 hours with her because she said that was the minimum and we broke these up into a couple of sessions. I also live in Houston so it was a trek getting out there to Stafford, so I usually give myself an hour before our sessions to arrive early and prepare. Among these times, I don't think there was one time where she was on time, nevertheless early. I would soon learn to bring something to do in the parking lot or do her homework while waiting. During our sessions her phone would constantly be on, and she would be texting and taking up phone calls which was a bit distracting for me (given, I believe most were from her parents regarding her baby). And there were times where I noticed she was setting up future tutorials which made me wonder why she was not as quick to respond to my requests. There were also issues for me where before my session ends, kids would be coming in to ask her questions, asking her about this and that, sharpening their pencils in the machine, etc. so our session would end early, or I was eager to get of there and let her deal with her incoming students. I have since then taken Kaplan and compared the two styles regarding GRE math; Shahin will teach you the quickest method to solve algebraically, where Kaplan teaches you that not all problems need to be fully solved, but to assess the problem and try to come up with an answer. I preferred the latter (Kaplan), but in all honestly I think that's just a personal preference.

After being discouraged and told to aim low by a competing college advisory firm, At Home Tutoring Service encouraged my child to aim high, and my child ended up at my child's first choice Ivy League school. Details: After feeling that I had wasted a sizable flat fee with competing college advisory firm Doran & Scalora (see review of that firm for details), I hired Alexander Wax on an hourly basis after my child's junior year of high school. From the start, Alexandra Wax encouraged my child to aim high, shared insights about college communities that would be a fit or not, identified admissions departments' preferences to guide essay drafting, and provided constructive criticism that pushed by child to produce creative and thoughtful essays. Alexandra's advice always made sense and reflected extensive experience and a broad network of admissions officers. The few times I asked why Alexandra had made a certain recommendation, Alexandra easily explained her reasoning, citing inside sources as well as publicly available information. My child loved working with Alexandra and remained excited and motivated throughout the college application process. I feel Alexandra's service was invaluable and worth-every-penny-and-more! I plan to hire At Home Tutoring Service again when my next child is ready to apply to college.

So, we came to this class to see if Mr. Jan can save her and she be able to handle AP. We were honest and explained we needed to evaluate and see if he can help her to get better. I'm not sure of spending this kind of money, with Mr. Jan is the right thing or not, but this set up does not work for everyone. I expected Tutor to be just that, a tutor! He told my daughter tonight when she asked a question that," you don't pay attention in class and this is why you are here!" REALLY?? I spent thousands of dollars for two of my kids to come here and was was a total waste of money and our time! I'm in no way done roasting this place or Mr. Jan himself!

In the class, I learned about new test-taking strategies, and I got a good review of all of the topics on the test. Most importantly, though, I got exposure to practice materials consistently throughout the course. I had to miss a few classes due to preexisting plans, and Testmasters was very flexible. They gave me access to the online course videos for the days that I missed so I could catch up on my own time. The teachers in the class were all really interesting, funny, and engaging. They knew my classmates and I were on vacation, so they put in a lot of effort to make the classes fun. Each day, lessons were filled with games and joke, but, even though we kept things casual and had a good time, the course was still super informative. (Testmasters also lightened the mood by bringing pizza or candy to each class, something they do for all of their courses.) Güs and Askari really stood out to me as excellent teachers. They knew their material well, and they kept class fun and exciting. For standardized testing, I believe that practice makes perfect, and I'm sure Testmasters would agree with me. Included with my course was Exam Club, a weekend service where you can go to a Testmasters location and take a practice ACT or SAT. Between the end of my course and when I took my ACT (February) I went to Exam Club every weekend possible. Each week, I saw my score go up a bit. I ended up getting a perfect 36 on the ACT thanks to Testmasters, and I would recommend their course to anyone looking for a standardized test prep program.

A friend recommended the Sugar Land location of TestMasters, so I submitted an inquiry through their website after reviewing the information they had posted. While their website provides a good overview, I wanted to better understand when my child should start the program and get more details about what their courses actually offer. Someone responded to my inquiry and asked me to call the office. Unfortunately, when I called, I felt that my questions were met with impatience, and I was repeatedly told to just read the website instead of having my questions answered. As a parent making an important decision about my child's education, I expected a more welcoming and informative conversation. The call left me feeling discouraged rather than supported, and it reduced my confidence in the level of customer service I could expect throughout the process. Even if the program itself is excellent, the initial communication is an important part of the experience, and unfortunately mine was disappointing.
