This is usually a great dog park, and most visits are positive. However, there are posted rules requiring certain breeds to wear a muzzle, and during one visit a dog who should have been muzzled attacked my Goldendoodle without any provocation. My dog ended up bleeding and needed an antibiotic injection from the vet. What made the situation worse was that the other owner did nothing to intervene, and we had to physically separate the dogs ourselves. It was frightening and completely avoidable if the posted rules had been followed. I hope the park enforces its guidelines more strictly so everyone's pets can stay safe. read more

There are several areas for dogs at this location. Parking is easy but the parking lot is in bad shape. Most dogs and owners are well behaved. At every dog park, you still experience owners who choose not to pick up after their pet. Itcwould be nice if there were more disposal areas here. Bring your own water and container for your dog, especially on warm days. read more

This is a wonderful park, except for the people who don't follow the rules. Brought my two cavaliers. An extremely hostile dog was being socialized in the large dog area which meant no one could go in there. So all the dogs were in the small dog area. Including 2 pit bull mixes (probably 50 lbs) who were not muzzled, but on leashes - the owner turned them loose. Which meant we and 3 other people had to go to the gravel area for a few minutes at least. I guess the city can do nothing or provide supervision occasionally. I guess people just don't follow the rules any place any more. read more

Huge amounts of space for dogs to run around, and separated into multiple sections with gates if your dog isn't getting along with others but still needs their space to enjoy. There is even a small dog area for little fur-babies to run around without getting scared. Multiple trash cans around to throw your doggie doo-doo away and tons of tennis balls that people leave behind. read more

Multiple very very large fenced in areas for dogs to run around in. Having just moved here from Northern Virginia, I was pleasantly surprised because there is absolutely nothing like this there. There were some mud puddles I needed to keep my dog out of, but over all very nice and I will definitely go back. read more

This park is built over an old landfill, and was once a baseball field. Over time, the land settled, and it became too hilly to remain a good option for baseball, so, the dog park was born. I was really impressed with this dog park after our initial visit. I am a regular at Hanscom Dog park due to the close proximity to my house, but have also been curious about Hefflinger out West. I was finally able to make a visit on a Monday at around 3pm with PERFECT weather conditions (63 and no wind, sunny and blue skies) and had such a great time. The organization of the park is similar to Hanscom-there are three enclosed pens and one is for small dogs and the rest are for large dogs or all dog sizes. Trashcans, trash bags, and water fountains are present in each of the pens. There is seating for dog owners if they want to relax as well. What I like about this park in comparison to Hanscom is: 1. Flatter terrain, and easier for my dog to run 2. more grass, less powdery dirt When I have time, this is certainly my park of choice to drive to. I still love Hanscom, but sometimes it's nice to mix it up, and having a less dirty dog after an hour of romping is certainly a bonus. read more

We have frequented Hefflinger with our two family dogs over the past 12 years. It is close to our home and provides a very large area for the dogs to run. I see some comments about irresponsible owners. I guess I assume that goes with anywhere you go in life, there are always going to be people who don't follow the rules, but for the most part, we are happy. You always have the owner who brings toys or treats and I get that is frustrating. My bigger gripe is probably how many small dogs I see on the big dog side, to which I say take your own risk! Because this was once a landfill, there are definitely some issues with the land settling. I appreciate the effort to utilize the space, but if you aren't careful navigating the parking lot, you could do some major damage to your car - there are what appears to be larger "sinkholes" and that is my reason for 3 stars. There is also a very nice playground adjacent to the park so nice perk if you bring kids along. This will remain our go-to spot for the future, but would appreciate the city of Omaha giving the parking lot some much needed love! read more

I used to play softball on these fields back in the day, so it's kind of surreal now how hilly the area is (due to landfill shiftage underground, I'm told). Tons of fun for people and dogs alike - as long as everyone follows the rules. Watch your dog, pick up after them, and don't bring in food (there are more than these, but these are the major ones). http://www.omahadogpark.org/Petiquette_GreenSign.pdf They have two seperate areas, one for big dogs and another for little dogs. If you think your dog is on the boarderline, be wary that some hard core park enthusiasts may hassle you if they think your dog is too big to be with the little dogs. Sometimes there are 'unattended kids' that seem to walk over from nearby houses to play with the dogs too (also against the rules), so be ready for that. Ultimately no matter how well behaved your dog is, there's always a dog that feels like being naughty or hasn't been taught not to be. You have to expect those situations too. And while there is the occasional fight that breaks out on the big dog side, the little dogs are always tons of fun with no serious fights that I've ever seen. Bottom line, it's great because it's the only dog park we have, but it'd be nice if there were more trees or benches. read more

I love how the park has 4 different areas to suit different dogs needs. I think for how many dogs go there daily it is pretty clean and poop free. I personally always bring my own bags so I don't know how well the bags are stocked but they have plenty of areas to grab bags and throw away poop bags. I really like the water fountains for the dogs as 30 minutes can be a lot out in the sun. My dog has done so much better opening up to people and dogs after visiting the dog park a few times. I have made this dog park a 1-2x mandatory weekly trip for my pup for how great it is space wise and cleanliness. read more

We have two dogs and I decided to take one of them out to the dog park today after hearing so much about it and the dog park makeover competition. One of our dogs is 7 months old & about 40 lbs, the other is almost 2 and about 105 lbs. We decided to take just one of them at first to see how it went. My daughter and I took Chloe, the younger one. (Pics posted.) If you've never been, you'll definitely want to check the website and look over the rules. www.omahadogpark.org/ It's a very large and wide open park, formerly baseball fields, split into two fenced areas - one for small dogs (30 lbs and under) and one for big dogs and small dogs that aren't afraid of big dogs. There is also a playground across the parking lot if you take the kids and they decide they're not comfortable around so many dogs. The website says to bring water for your dog since there's none available at the park but there is now a water fountain and even though the website said the fountains are turned off for the season, they were on when we were there today. Your best bet is to be prepared and take both water and a bowl. Dogs have to be leashed while walking to/from the park but can be taken off the leash as soon as they enter the park. I like that there are two gates because if a dog should happen to make a break for it, they won't get very far unless both gates are open. I was very nervous about taking our dog off of her leash so we walked her around along the (inside) edge of the park for a bit first. When we got closer to the dogs and other dog owners, it was pretty obvious we were newbies because of the leash. Several people were so friendly and helpful and told me to just take off her leash, that she'd be okay and that it makes it a lot easier. Letting her off of her leash was almost as nerve-racking as sending one of my children off to kindergarten! But she did much better than I expected. All of the dogs there (about 30 or so, ranging in size from terriers to Newfoundlands and St. Bernards) were so well-behaved. The humans were polite, friendly, and totally understanding when it came to being jumped on or slobbered on. The park itself needs a lot of work so I really hope our city wins the makeover competition that Sarah and Sadie (I think those are the right names) entered. There aren't many places to sit, not a whole lot of shade and quite a few holes in the very uneven ground. It's really easy to find. Just take the Maple Street exit off of 680, head towards 108th Street then turn left at the next light after the one at 108th and Maple. The short road (Hefflinger) that you turn onto at that light just runs right into the parking lot. I'm really glad that we have access to a place like this and I can't wait to go back and take both dogs with us this time. read more

A open letter to dog park virgins: 1. Dogs get messy. Seriously messy. Like jumping into mud puddles, drooling all over each other and throwing up. It is super hard to avoid this and honestly, why bother? If you're an owner, wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty and bring a towel for your car. 2. Dogs share. If you bring water, other dogs will drink it and it will become contaminated with drool, dirt and grass. If you throw a ball, another dog may fetch it. It's pretty unavoidable. 3. Not all kids are dog park kids. If you bring your little ones, its probably best if they aren't afraid of dogs and/or they don't scream, chase or hit dogs. Not all dogs are used to kids and may not appreciate being assaulted, no matter how innocent the intention. read more

Adequate dog park. Will be better once some of the trees are big enough to provide shade. They open and close different areas throughout the year to let the grass grow back. I'm really glad that they converted this over to a dog park. I didn't know anything about it until someone mentioned it to me. You'll drive right past it and never know. I have a older dog and a toddler puppy and this works out great for both of them. It gives them great socializing skills and it's great for exercise. On the weekends during the warmer months, there is normally around 30-50 dogs out there when I get there. They have bag stations all around and trash cans to dispose of any poop. They also just installed a dog and a human water fountain out there. Now you don't have to worry about carrying a jug of water with you. You might wanna bring a bowl though because it does get muddy around the fountain. If your dog plays well with others, then definitely check it out. read more

We have brought our dog a few times and he LOVES it! It is so fun to watch all of the dogs running around. Unfortunately, our car was broken into the last time we were there. This place has been a God-send to our labrador, Harley. Talk about fun for her. Now, I know that there has been an unfortunate incident which ended badly between a puppy and an aggressive dog..but I don't want that to overshadow all of the good running and playing that happens out there. There is a side of the park for "all dogs" - those who are big and those who can hang with the big dogs. For those who can't, there is a small dog side to the park which is completely wonderful. Picnic table and bench are available. Owners are suggested to bring water for their dog and baggies are available for picking up their dog's waste. The place is so user-friendly. I just hope that all of the rules are followed and that no other dog needs to fear being in the "All Dog" section if they are able to keep up with the pack. ;) read more

I love taking my dogs to this dog park. The only reason I don't give it five stars is just because it certainly could be a little nicer and not so muddy. I like that there is a side for only small dogs and then a side for all dogs mostly bigger. It's great they have doggie poop bags. Not that everyone uses them.... But the dogs are usually friendly and the owners (mostly) keep a good watch over their own dogs. This park is a great resource for dog owners in the area and it's free which is good but the owners also don't have to show proof that dogs are updated on vaccines. Overall this park is great and I will be back many many more times. read more

We take our dog here quite often and he loves it. The place is clean and they provide plenty of bags and trash cans to clean up after your dog. For the most part people do clean up after their pets. They have two areas, one for large dogs and another for the smaller breeds. It does get muddy after a good rain but we usually end up giving our dog a bath after the park anyway due to the dog slobber he accumulates on him;) Could the place use some work, sure. Is it a secure place to let your dog run, absolutely. I haven't run into any owners that weren't mindful of their pets and so it's been safe each time we've visited. Bring water for your dog, but each time we've been there everyone was more than willing to share. Some tips: Don't bring food or treats (human or doggie) and if you bring toys/balls be prepared to share them and not get upset if it gets destroyed or lost. read more

I love brining my Dog Thunder here. The fences are well maintained and having poop bags available makes cleaning up easy. I did get lost the first time around trying to find this park so I would recommend using google maps and park in the back parking lot. We brought our dog here yesterday, stayed for about five minutes and left with our dog with a bite and bloody snout. The regulars that bring their dogs here let their dogs do whatever they want, regardless of their aggression. If a dog has aggressive tendencies, they shouldn't be at a dog park. Too many irresponsible owners at this park that think their huge dogs snapping at and bullying others is okay. I know many will say it's " just dogs playing " but the owners that frequent this park have no regard for the safety of anyone else's animals. Aggressive dogs with bad owners are then people you will meet here, on more than one occasion we have had to rescue our dog from being repeatedly slammed to the ground by other dogs while owners preach about how playful their wolf hybrid or pitbull is. read more

I love going to this park, but there is a problem with people bringing dogs that shouldn't be there. People need to understand that bringing their violent dog isn't okay. Aggressive playing is one thing, but lashing at any dog that tries to sniff it is crossing the line. Other than that, this place is great and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their dog social :) read more

I recently rescued a dog from the humane society and this has been a great place to go to get him socialized with other dogs-- especially since they separate the park into two areas, one for the big dogs and one for the small dogs like my dachshund Cletus. Great idea and concept but horrible dog owners. When my wife and I used to take one of our dogs here, our dog loved interacting and being playful with the other dogs as well as being able to run "free." To no surprise, the irresponsible dog owners run overrun this place. You have owners who don't control and or watch their dogs while being overly aggressive, you also have owners who have dogs that are bigger than themselves in which they can't control. Rules are pointless when no one follows them. read more

Took our pups, Tristan and Eleanor, for their first dog park experience today and this place was wonderful. Huge open areas to run and play, they absolutely loved it! I love that they have a small dog area, it was perfect for our 6 and 7lb babies. We were the only ones on the small dog side which was excellent for their first time but I hope to meet some friends soon. I only knock off a star because it would be nice to have some larger trees in the area and the parking lot and driveway up really needs some leveling but otherwise it's a great place. We will definitely be back, hope to see you there! read more

We have a Boston Terrier that we take to Hefflinger Park at least once a week. She loves to run around whether it be in the small dog or large dog side of the park. Having said that, this place could be improved. The small dog side has just two picnic tables and often times has puddles of mud. I am glad to see that they added some trees but there's still much to do before I can consider giving this place more than three stars. I really hope they win the contest. read more

I have visited this park for many years with my two dogs. My first dog was a German Shepherd lab mix and we spent all our time on the 'Big Dog' side. I now have a Corgi and we spent the majority of our time on the 'Small Dog' side. I feel like this park has gone down hill since my visits with my first dog in 2009. Each side is now split in half and they change the side in which the dogs are allowed each year. I understand why they did this (to allow grass/trees to grow) but it really cuts down the area in which the dogs can play. On the small dog side I find the owners are more attentive when it comes to their pets, they pick up their dog's poop (there's still a pile here and there) and they pay attention to their dog's play behavior. It is the complete opposite on the other side, there is often dog waste all over and owners do not remain close to their dogs nor do they pay attention to how their dog is playing with others. There has been multiple times where I have had to stand between my dog and another dog who is getting to aggressive and the owner is nowhere to be found. I also find that the large dog side is mainly dirt, the grass is almost impossible to grow in this side. Overall, I like this park and will continue to go here because it is close to my home. I just wish Omaha would do more for the dog parks in the city. read more
