Another word of warning William Wordsworth left Cockermouth when he was 13, following the death of his father (his mother had died five years earlier). Spend an afternoon in your own home with a copy of his Collected Poems and you'll get more idea of how the child was father of the man. This is an idealised example of life at the top of the tree in the 18th century, complete with local people trussed up in fancy dress to look like domestic staff. The house was a 'tied' home. It came with John Wordsworth's job as agent for Sir James Lowther's Cumberland estates. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes! The is apparently a closer car park for anyone who would have trouble with the walk. The walk to the castle was quite nice and I have to admit I enjoyed the walk, the view from the front of the castle down on the valley and the owl centre more than the castle itself. I was unimpressed with the castle as there were only a few rooms open to the public since the family lives there. The audio tour is extremely long-winded and my husband and I both quit using that very quickly or we'd probably have been there for hours. I suppose it was something to do but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, really. There are a lot of things I'd love to take my family to when they visit from America but this is certainly not one of them. I really didn't find it worth the money.

Cafe's not cheap,castle's not immpressive but the grounds are lovely and the owls are a bonus.So worth a day out if your'e in the vicinity and looking for something to do.

There are also lovely large gardens for a walk with little surprises appearing from time to time. The guides are all so friendly and helpful and to get the most from the trip find a question to ask in every room - even if it is simply so what is particularly special about this room - it is then that you hear all the little funny interesting stories of the house.
