So, my first two appointments were awesome!! Based on those reviews alone I could have easily given them five stars.
I had gotten a Deva cut before and was still transitioning from a horrible dye job and heat damage. The first two times I went, I had appointments with Johny and she cut off as much as I wanted her to and shaped my hair very well. Excellent job and absolutely no complaints (besides not using enough product when styling to leave the salon so still having to deal with some frizz and having to re-apply products or re-do the hair at home because it looked like Day 5 hair versus day 1).
Yeah, everyone gets tired of hearing the devacurl speeches, but I really do believe in the products and the philosophy. Why? Because even though Deva may not work for you, the curly girl method is a real thing and it can work if you are dedicated.
The problem came when I came in two to three weeks ago for some pintura highlights and a trim. I told Johny that I wanted my length still but to just frame my face and trim my bangs a bit. I had gotten a very very excellent highlight job last year at another salon that caters to curly hair and also has devachan stylists, but she did not do pintura (I personally do not care for the method at all!) and she put three different colors in my hair, used a toner for the correct tones the first time and used the foils. Yes it was time consuming, but it was nice to not have someone cut corners and I got so many compliments on my hair!
I sat down for my highlights and she told me that she would do the pintura which I was open to at the time, but I told her that I wanted it to blend in with the highlights that I already had and I also showed her pictures of what I wanted the color to look like. She gave me a gold color which I thought was okay at that time and she told me would lighten up as the days progressed and I was outside in the sun more. Okay, fair enough. She styled it well and I went along my way after re-upping my Deva product stash.
3 days later, I am re-doing my hair only to find out that she did huge chunks on my right side of my head and barely any color on my left. I don't really wear my hair parted on the right side regularly, so that is a problem. I was instantly annoyed and called Johny to let her know that I was not happy. A few days later, she called to tell me that she could do the toner on the 16th, which did not work for me. I called her back to give her the days that worked for me and she never called back. Finally, I called last week Thursday to see if she could squeeze me in behind my friend on Saturday for a "pampering day" that her Boyfriend was paying for. I asked if she could use a toner this time and told her that I wanted less gold and more of an ash blonde. Easy fix, right? Just use a toner.
I get there and not only do they NOT have the toner and she doesn't tell me.... she doesn't tell me any of this before she applied a dye to my hair to "tone it down", or rather, put my hair through another process that I am not happy with. My friend explained to me later that they didn't have it and I didn't even hear her saying any of this.
Yeah, it looks okay, some people think it's cute, but it's not what I wanted at the end of the day and I'm still pissed that he paid for a service that I didn't like. To be 100% honest, I will probably never go back to Johny for a color service. That was supposed to be a pampering day for my bestie which is why I didn't make a huge stink right then and there. Honestly, since I don't feel that they do very many color services and stick to the natural hair philosophy and the curly girl method, I don't think that she has very much experience.
What have I learned from this lesson? That if you find a colorist that you like, stick with them and realize that not every stylist can do color. Also realize that you may have to shell out more cash for separate services at separate salons. Liking a stylist and finding one who can do what you ask are completely different things.
Yes, I like Johny and I like the natural hair services that she provides, but she needs more experience in hair coloring and not rushing through her clients, which for the past two visits, she has done with both me and my friend. Maybe she needs to leave more time for her clients or leave a 30 minute slot open after each appointment so that she isn't completely ignoring requests (like my BFF not wanting Johny to scrunch her hair and she did it anyway) or me telling her that I wanted to try to use the diffuser myself and she did it her way then tried to stick me under the hooded dryer when we said our time was limited. Either way, she will probably not like the review so, I know that I am completely done with coloring services from her. read more
