The Mulholland Lighthouse was constructed in 1885. The lighthouse served as a guide for small…read morecoastal boats, passenger ships and freighters coming through the Lubec Channel. Ships were en route to or from the USA or Canadian ports on Grand Manan Island; part of the Canadian Fundy group of islands. It is a part of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park The lighthouse is not open to the public however visitors can walk around it and enjoy a picnic site overlooking the narrows with the picturesque town of Lubec, ME, in the background. It is also visible from the US side, as you can see from my photos. At least as of March 2021, the border between the United States and Canada is closed to non-essential traffic. Once it is open, the lighthouse is very close to the bridge. If you've come to Lubec - and you brought your passport - check it out. This is my second time here in two years, and I have to say the growth has been moderate, not explosive and I like it. The mustard shop is here, the candy shop is here, there aren't any really tacky souvenir stores but there are some really nice artists to be found at different places. I've promised myself that next time I'm in Eastport, I'm going to walk into the resident part of town, and see the architecture, the houses and the streets and get a solid feel for the vibe here. Walking around the growing "tourist" area- it's nice. People here are friendly and it's a really welcome itinerary stop for me. I hope to be back soon - I want a lobster roll from the fireman food truck on the dock!

You can stay in the keeper's house at a privately run decommissioned lighthouse that still operates. It is on an island that is a short 8-10 minute boat ride from the Cutler Town boat ramp. Terry, the keeper in residence, is a wealth of knowledge in the lighthouse and community. Why? Because he operated the lighthouse for the Coast Guard over 40 years ago and returned to assist with it after it was decommissioned. How cool is that? Priceless. A small private island, with a huge character, it is amazing to me how this place has been overlooked for so long. If you like lighthouses, and let's be honest who doesn't?, this is one that HAS to be on your true bucket list! Don't look for frills and fancies, this is a Lighthouse. You pack your own cooking and drinking water and bring food for your stay, but you can grill, use the full kitchen (yes there is electricity) and can shower. Most important though, you can climb the light and view it from the outside deck (recently repainted). It is amazing! There are trails and wildlife on the island. It is nature with privacy, beauty, and a lighthouse that is incredible!

Our cruise stopped in Eastport, Maine, on Friday, June 19, the day before we disembarked from our…read more11-night cruise aboard the Volendam. This time, the ship was able to dock directly at the pier, and the weather was beautiful--sunny, pleasant, and in the 70s. Last year, when we visited Eastport aboard the Zuiderdam, we had to tender ashore instead. Once ashore, everything was within easy walking distance of the pier. The town is charming, scenic, and incredibly welcoming. One of the highlights of my visit was spending some time at the waterfront, where local residents were displaying live lobsters, starfish, sea urchins, and other marine life native to the area in a large seawater tank. Several people staffed the exhibit and interacted with visitors throughout the day. They allowed guests to hold live lobsters, explained how to tell the difference between male and female lobsters, discussed how water temperature can influence the color of a lobster's shell, explained how lobsters feed, and allowed people to pick up live starfish and take photos with them. I walked by several times and enjoyed watching visitors engage with the locals and learn about the region's marine environment. During one of my stops, I spoke with a gentleman who was kind, knowledgeable, and happy to share information about the region's marine life. During our conversation, I learned that his brother owns Look Lobster at Quoddy Bay, a local lobster restaurant in Eastport. If I return to the area, I would definitely make a point of visiting and trying some of their lobster dishes. I spent the afternoon wandering through this beautiful waterfront town, browsing local art galleries, museums, and shops, and picking up a few souvenirs. One of my favorite purchases was a hand-painted shell night light featuring a lobster design, created by a local artisan. At one of my stops, I learned about the Quoddy Tidal Power Project, which was championed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as his summer cottage on Campobello Island in New Brunswick. The island is easily accessible through the Eastport and Lubec area of Maine. It was another fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the region. I am so glad I decided to step off the ship. I got in over 10,000 steps, enjoyed the sunshine, picked up a few unique souvenirs, and came away with a wonderful impression of this beautiful coastal Maine town.

If you've come this far, you should keep an eye out for the Lubec Channel Light. This…read moresparkplug-styled lighthouse was established in 1890. It provides navigational aid to the shallow waters between Lubec Maine and Campobello Island Canada. It is in the United States by some 500 feet and is currently owned privately. The light is visible from Lubec Road and also South Water Street. It is not accessible by land, on either side of the border. Three stars because you can't get there from here and even if you could, it's private property. In the 1880s a channel was dredged through the shallows to facilitate seagoing commerce from the port communities of Lubec, Eastport and Calais. An 1883 report recommended installation of a light on the channel to aid navigation, funding was authorized in 1888, and the light went into operation in 1890. It was automated in 1939. The lantern stands 53 feet (16 m) above Mean High Water. It is a simple white tower on a black base. [Review 14865 overall, 367 of 2021, number 49 in Maine.]

This small concrete reinforced bridge spans the Machias River in East Machias. It carries US-1…read more Named after William Pope, it was privately financed by three of his descendants and his seven sons who were early settlers and entrepreneurs of East Machias. In 1902, it was the first bridge to be constructed of reinforced concrete and is believed to be the oldest concrete bridge of any type still in use in Maine. A three-arch, closed spandrel structure, it is the work of Leonard Metcalf, a preeminent civil engineer and bridge designer. It is the fourth bridge in this location to cross the East Machias River. There is a small parking area on the west side of the bridge where the Sunrise Trail follows the course of the river. Mill Memorial Park (which we did not visit) is on the east side, downstream from the bridge. It is a very pretty bridge and at this time of the year, some of the snowmelt is making for a lovely rush of rapids under the bridge and through the rocks. Stop by for a picture, as we did.
