Gringos beware! My…read morewife and I took our computers into Abaco Computers yesterday. I needed two small things but my wife had a bigger problem. I wanted a new (cosmetic) cap for an end post of the laptop's watch hinge, but the technician explained that they didn't have one. I also had a loose screw on the back plate that required a star screwdriver which he quickly tightened. He then turned his attention to my wife's computer. The problem was that the 3-way laptop sensor wasn't working. The laptop screen goes black in laptop mode at less than 130 degrees. It should work at much less. I believe the technician correctly identified that there was an issue with the flexor or signal bus that communicates with the keyboard from the screen and/or the hinge. The technician explained the problem but said any work he did would invalidate our US warranty. He said it would take weeks to get a new part. He did not attempt to fix or reconnect it which I thought would have been an easy thing to do. Then, he charged me 200 pesos. He hadn't done anything and wasn't going to charge me, but being an American I said "Well, what do I owe you?" expecting a small token. He seemed surprised that I'd asked. He was laughing and smiling at the Mexican customers and employees. Then he said a dollar and I handed him 20 pesos. Then, still laughing, he said "No ten dollars" and I gave him a 200 peso note. They were still laughing as we left. I was too embarrassed and my Spanish was too poor to protest, but it was very clear that I received a special "Gringo Discount."
