I completed a Masters in Holistic Nutrition from Hawthorn this fall. I found the program to be quiet comprehensive and informative. The University was accommodating to me through six yearsof study. I took two leaves of absence for 2 seperate childbirths and they were kind and supportive. I got a BA from University of San Francisco prior to my education here at Hawthorn. I also have education towards a RN and experience working in a hospital (UCSF). I work with an integrative health MD who found the education I got at Hawthorn to be informative. I really enjoyed getting this Masters online verses being in a classroom setting. My instructor was fabulous; she guided and challenged me the whole time. read more

I completed a Master's in Traditional Nutrition this last spring. The information I have received has given me knowledge to not only improve the health of my family, but friends and new contacts that are seeking to improve their health as well. Since I do not believe there is only one approach to healing, which can be controversial in the field of nutrition, I was concerned about my success here. However, the program allowed for broad thinking and augmented my knowledge base substantially. Dr. Lyke really made the program significant for me. This School must not need any students to enroll. I left a message to the head of admissions and asked her to call me back at her convenience because I had a couple of questions. She called me back a few hours later, and the first thing she said was "didn't you hear on my answering machine that I was on vacation? You don't listen to those???". The only message I heard was an automatic one, saying leave a message after the bip. I am so sorry I bothered her during her vacation time and I am not sure why she even called me back. I attended Hawthorn from 2006 to 2010 and received a certification in holistic nutrition. I loved the education, loved my teacher, and would highly recommend their curriculum!!! read more

I feel as though there is not enough legitimate course content, instruction, associated resources or accreditation to call Hawthorn a university and to present their Holistic Nutrition program as a Masters of Science. I was basically paying for a really expensive reading list, doing assignments based off that reading list, and getting a few notes back from an otherwise imaginary professor. I admit that online learning is not for me, but I also know that for a student with a liberal arts background, a MS should be the least bit challenging. I prefer to work for and enjoy my education, not just pay for it. Also, the majority of the assigned readings were complete bias. I enrolled in a holistic nutrition program to learn the objective facts of nutrition and to do with that information what I wish upon graduation, not to receive an opinionated, watered-down version of nutritional science. The whole experience felt unofficial and unprofessional, and I have a hard time believing that graduates of Hawthorn are qualified to call themselves nutrition professionals after completing this program alone. I am still going forward with the field of nutrition but am doing so through a U.S. accredited university for Nutrition and Dietetics. This program made me loathe a subject I otherwise am so interested in and passionate about. I believe that learning the standardized way and practicing it with a holistic perspective will be more beneficial to my career and future patients/clients than completing a holistic program that most health professionals discredit and apparently for good reason. read more

I felt compelled to write a review after reading what the last reviewer wrote because even though I'm not enrolled yet, my experiences with them so far have been great. I'm in the process of reviewing schools and Hawthorn's curriculum is by far the best I've come across in holistic nutrition. They also have a Weston A. Price program as well which is pretty cool. WAP is actually how I found them. I've sent several emails to inquire about a few things and I've received super speedy responses. Thorough answers too which is nice. I've watched several of their webinars and like the speakers and the information. The only downside I can find is that they aren't accredited yet but from what they tell me they are in the process though which is great! Everything else about them I love so thats definitely not a deal breaker. The only suggestion I have for them is to incorporate Functional Medicine into their program as well! read more
