I…read morearrived in Heidelberg from Schwäbisch land (Stuttgart), where there were only two choices for a vegetarian: Käsespätzle und Maultaschen. And if one is lactose-intolerant, then one can only subsist on Kartoffelsalat :-( This restaurant fed me like I'd never been fed before! There seemed to be endless creations in vegetarian delicacies, both cold and hot, savory and sweet, that covered several long shelves. I would have had at least 3 full plates, if not for the reason that my local friend was paying for lunch - charged by weight - and I didn't want to empty her wallet :-). Weather permitting, there are both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a super popular spot that attracts many diners.

Once you have put your food you want on your plate you go up to the register and they weigh your plate. Depending on the weight is how much you pay. The service is fast and helpful. It is usually pretty full there, but totally worth going. Even my four year old picky eater found something to eat there.

Heller's is a self-serving restaurant - if you're a vegetarian, it's perfect for you…read more Also if you have certain food allergies or are gluten-sensitve or lactose-intolerant, this is the place for you, because every dish has a tag listing its ingredients and if it's gluten- and/or lactose-free. The ingredients are listed in German, still if in doubt it's safer to ask the staff anyway. You pay 1,55EUR/100g for everything with some exceptions - depending on the day, noodles with sauce or potato pancakes with apple sauce are only 1,25EUR/100g - make sure to use a different plate for these so they can be weighed separately at the checkout. There is also a lunch menu from 12-2 o'clock that is not weighed and costs about 6EUR per portion. The best thing about the place is that is offers a huge variety of vegetables, salads, dishes and dressings - they also have nice desserts incl. gluten-free ice cream and all sorts of cake. They are all well cooked and sometimes even spicy. Again they don't offer any meat, it's purely vegetarian - some dishes are even vegan (if marked so). Downside is the price as well as the location, because the interior is not very appealing, furniture seems cheap or randomly chosen at best. Also there's no A/C even though the sun is shining through several windows in the ceiling. The staff is very unprofessional though helpful if asked for help. Also everything is very clean and tidy, which is nice. Good thing is also that it's not very formal, anyone eats there, students, working people, old people - just anyone. Still even though the food is good, it would be nice if they renovated the place, replaced the furniture and got some A/C.

The wraps come in different flavours…read more(vegetarian, beef, chicken, tofu and shrimps) and with different sauces (currently mango-curry and honey-mustard) and are served alongside a nice amount of couscous salad. Both the salad and the wraps are very tasty, no matter how you choose your ingredients. Even the tofu one was tasty! :) Also great is that they manage to keep the prices low: For less than 5€ you get a wrap in any flavour that is easily enough to make you feel full. Apart from the wraps they also offer juices (yummy!), salads that you can customise and warm dishes. I have yet to try the warm dishes and the salads. Attention: Lines can get long during lunch time and you might be out of luck with finding a place to sit. My only complaint is that they are not open at night. This would be a perfect place for getting a night snack but they currently close at 7pm.
