To preface this review, my partner is quite a stereotypical man who doesn't really know much about fashion so when entrusted with the daunting task of finding a suit we were really hoping the staff here would be somewhat helpful. We found Ieuan Webb and asked for some help. My partner admitted that he had no clue what he was doing and basically gave him the reigns. The result? A wonderful 3 piece suit with a matching shirt and tie completely styled nicely! Ieuan spent quite a while picking things out and was patient with the fact that we weren't really helpful with pointing him in any particular direction. He gave us tips on what colours work well together and some advice on which style of tie knot worked. Overall, we left really impressed! If we come back for a suit for another occasion, we'll definitely be going back to him again. The rest of the staff seemed just as helpful and while I was waiting for my partner, one of them was even passing out sweets to the customers. Everyone seemed to really enjoy working there which is a far cry from a lot of other retail stores. I'd happily recommend Slaters to anyone looking for a new suit, particularly people who aren't confident with knowing what to pick out themselves. The result is worth it!

I went in looking for a jumper, looking for one of those snuggly huggly jumpers that you put on when you've got home from a long wet walk and just want to huddle in front of the television with a hot chocolate. I was quite happy with the range of jumpers that were on offer in terms of style but when I looked at the prices (most of them seemed to be around £45 and upwards) I was a little disappointed because there wasn't a great deal of substance. Having said that, popping in here on a sunny day to find bikinis, flip flops and the like does make me feel as though I might be heading down to Cornwall soon, mostly because of the surfer decor. The shop assistant (or Ginger herself, perhaps?) was cheerful and helpful, and struck me as incredibly stylish, making me feel a bit frumpy in my hoodie, jeans and trainers (hey, it was a Monday morning after all!).

In fact it's jeans that Barker are probably best known for - with more for men than for women. They have a wide range, with different labels, denims and styles, then alongside that they have quite a few t-shirts, hoodies, and so on. The shop front itself is fairly plain and simple from the outside, and then inside it's quite relaxed and informal, with friendly, helpful staff.

The suits are all very well made, and that's about all I can really say for them because I'm certainly not an expert in that area. What I will say though, is that they are all quite unimaginative. Meaning that if it's a snazzy silver suit you're after, this isn't the place! Their range of ties, also, leave a whole lot to the imagination, but if it's plain you want, then you'll be fine. They also have a wide selection of bridal wear and it's here I think the shop finally comes into its own a bit. The dresses they have on display tend to lean towards the traditional side, but manage to stay away from the meringues and lace too much. If I were to get married, I would certainly have a look in here, and I've heard great things about their bridesmaid dresses too. They do, however, offer a wide range of bridal and bridal party dresses from some of the leading designers, including Benjamin Roberts and Stevies Gowns. They're not extortionately priced, either; some of the sale bridal gowns on offer were less than £400. The salesman was dressed like he was off to a wedding, but managed to be friendly without being oppressive (I don't know why, but I always expect staff at places like these to be snotty). It's also worth mentioning that Formal Affair, Calders's in-house hire specialist will beat any suit hire price in town, so it definitely merits a visit if you're on the hunt for the perfect wedding garb.
