Today i sat next to the roaring fire at Harts, and i started to feel far too warm and cosy and sleepy, so we relocated to the outside decking overlooking the Thames in order to stay awake. It's still glorious outside in October! This pub is one of my favourites. Never too busy, never too quiet and lots of comfy sofas. They also serve Pepsi, not Coke which makes me happy. There is a restaurant upstairs, which i haven't been to in years, but keep meaning to try again. I usually stick to the bar menu, which is slightly limited and rather pricey for what it is, but convenient! £10 for a burger and £15 for a steak? They also do a mean haddock and chips! It seems to be a meeting place for new mums every afternoon. Which is understandable. If i had a baby, i would bring it here. read more

What an impressive transformation! It's been some time since I was last at Hart's; I've pretty much avoided it because my previous experience was so lacklustre and unappealing. Then, it was a rather 'blah' local that was far from making the best of its great location. Today, it's a different story entirely, so much so, that I feel sorry I've been missing out! Enter and the pale slate floors and sludgy leather sofas - in shades of beige, pale brown and smokey grey - give a clean, modern, inviting welcome. The bar is attractive; the staff efficient, smiling, attentive, helpful and patient. Outside seating is plentiful (and popular) providing a great view, right on the water's edge. The drinks menu is impressive and might cause you to take a while before deciding, such is the choice. Summer-time (what's that?, I hear you ask) offers a selection of four Pimms cocktails, at £3.50 per glass or £13 per jug (including an elderflower variant and a pomegranate version). Eclectic beers are available from The Meantime Brewery, at £3.70, (chocolate, raspberry, pale ale and union). Along with the more usual suspects and additional creative options. The dining menu is modern and appealing: from 'sharing plates' through to a full three courses, by way of 'fired pizzas', grills, risotto and organic salmon with wasabi mash. We visited Hart's Boatyard today for Sunday lunch. I am not compelled to writing reviews but Hart's Boatyard was, unfortunately, diabolical. The roast beef was good. The 'spit' chicken was terrible, not spit-roasted, lack of any flavour or seasoning, greasy gravy. The awful, fat, chunky chips were badly cooked and soggy, and not 'Belgian frites' as advertised. However, worse was yet to come. We ordered the 'Eton mess with mango and passion fruit' for dessert. This was undoubtedly the worst thing I have ever eaten. The cream tasted off, and the fruit was unripe and the presentation was dreadful. Avoid dining at Hart's Boatyard. read more

The place is beautiful but sadly the man waiter who brought us the food is the most rude, bad-mannered, overbearing person in the world, terrible attention speaks badly to the client, does not let you talk, when you go to tell him something he turns around and leaves you with the words in your mouth, When I complained and told him that I was going to give him a bad review for attention he got exalted and became hysterical, we had to call the manager, obviously we did not eat because after that, who wants to continue there, we paid for the drinks and we left. They should not have people like that attending customers, they should work in another sector. when we arrived we had seen how the same waiter dropped a glass and his reaction and his face were extremely annoying very unpleasant really. change it to another department is the minimum they can do read more

This place has fabulous views especially from the top floor across the Thames and Bushey Home Park. It is quite relaxing to watch the boats, rowers, swans and moor hens on the water. Bag a seat by the window and catch a lovely sunset . The layout downstairs is really good with quite a few tables and easy seating tucked away in quieter corners but the atmosphere could not be described as cosy. In the winter can be cold by the door at the far end as smokers go in and out into the courtyard to smoke. A big roaring fire could make all the difference to the lounge area. The food I find is not consistently good , a hit and miss affair, and I have been often disappointed - I now tend to just order soups or salads and even that sometimes can be limp and sadand the chicken greasy++...( only go there for the views )......the service is so so sloooow however, the waiter/esses are really nice and helpful. The desserts are consistently yummy! Prices are generally reasonable but like I said not always good value for money due to the inconsistency in food quality. There was a good selection of wines and soft drinks. I am afraid there isn't much ambience in the place although it has been revamped and looks quite chic and modern ( except the (female)toilet area which is not heated and is sooo cold in the winter). Plenty of free car parking but no where practical to tether up my bicycle though. I tied it up to the shed door as that was the only secure place I could find! If you want fab views than Harts Boatyard is your joint but if you want good food do go the extra mile literally in the direction of Kingston or to Maple Road in Surbiton where you will find plenty of excellent eating places. I love the decor of Harts, and it could be a fantastic venue. Unfortunately the staff can be rude and are poorly trained within the bar area. However venture upstairs to the main restaurant, and the staff are friendly and the food has generally been good (I've eaten there maybe 4-5 times). Be warned, it's a little expensive for what you get. It's worth a visit for a special occasion, but I would look at other pubs in the area if you're looking for a good value feast. read more

I was really really disappointed with the standard of food and service myself and my party of 7 other received on Saturday night. Despite hearing mixed reviews, I decided to give Harts Boatyard a go. My family were in town and thought it'd be a nice treat. Unfortunately it wasn't. The food itself was honestly completely uninspiring and poorly prepared, I can't think of more constructive way of phrasing it to be honest. I think the seafood risotto was about the only vaguely enjoyable thing anyone in my party ordered. The anti pasti and caprese plates (seriously though, £12?! Come on guys) we're average, and staved off the hunger for the 1 hour and 20 mins it took to get a main course ordered. I had the Spit Chicken with Lemon, Garlic, Thyme and Chips for my main meal, which was just a chicken leg and breast (I think) cooked in some gravy stuff I think. Don't get me wrong, chicken perfectly cooked, chips ok too. The gravy though absolutely gross, and nowhere to be seen in the description, unlike the lemon, thyme and garlic, which must have gone missing somewhere. My dad's duck pizza was pretty awful too, is it supposed to be stone cold? A stale dry flat bread, obviously ran out of hoi sin sauce or anything moist to supplement it, cold rock hard fried duck and some garden turf In fact, remove the flatbread, and you've pretty much dished up my grandfather's duck salad too (is it supposed to be luke warm?). Totally below average food and an absolutely rip to boot. The food and the price we paid for it on Saturday night just did not tally up. I'd have sent it back or complained, had there been anyone to report it to. It took 4 hours to eat a two course meal something really not right about that is there? I'm neither a food critic or an expert, but I do eat out fairly regularly. We did, in fact, eat at Hotel Bosco on Surbiton high street yesterday, and to be honest it blew Harts Boatyard out of the water. I've never complained about a restaurant before, so forgive me if the style and wording isn't really appropriate, but I was just really disappointed, almost angry, at how such an amazing location, and an amazing setting, could be taken for granted. Its just that the menu looks amazing, the place looks amazing, and I'd been really looking forward to it, that's all. When it came down to it, didn't deliver anywhere near what I'd have expected, and it was embarrassing taking my family there. The food is good here, not cheap, but with the quality it is understandable. The view and interior are lovely and the staff are amazingly pleasant even at the end of a long shift. As previously mentioned on here there are a lot of kids in the afternoons/early evenings, so if you prefer a more grown up ambience be sure to book your table for late evening. read more

So this a a bit of a mixed review from me. I LOVE the venue. It's very welcoming and cosy - with spectacular river views that need to be experienced at sunset for the full effect. The seating area is not cramped and the size of the building means that the place never looks unbearably full - even in the peak of Summer. The drinks here are good, with an impressive beer and wine menu and some tasty cocktails. Bar food is generally quite good - look out for the pizzas which are particularly tasty. However, I have eaten in the restaurant twice now and the food has not lived up to the price tag. Sunday lunch is a sad affair with food portions being inconsistent and service being extremely rushed. This is such a disappointment as I really wanted this place to be able to tick all of the boxes. My final gripe is that there is no wifi. What's going on? Surbiton and Kingston is full of nomadic laptop workers who would love to be able to use Hart's Boatyard for meetings and general head-down time. I absolutely love this place. The building itself looks amazing and they've really made it look very classy inside. Everything is from wood which really gives you the whole boatyard vibe. The food is truly amazing. My all time favourite there is the chicken which always tastes delicious. Staff is really friendly and helpful and looks after you really well from the moment you enter the restaurant. During the summer you can sit outside which is lovely as it is right on the Thames. A wonderful setting for a pub lunch. The decor inside is modern and it really is a treat to sit out on the balconies and see the boats drift by on the Thames. The food is reasonably delicious and you have a choice of a bar menu or a restaurant menu. My friends are always impressed by the views when we go. read more

Fab location and competent food BUT. We were not allowed to order a starter which was available on the roasts menu but not on the regular menu. We ordered a main course (steak) which was higher in value than a roast but wanted to try the parma ham starter. The (trainee) manageress told us we could only have the parma ham starter if we were having a roast. No starter for us then (£6 less incremental revenue and customers are already unhappy). Mix up with the bill at the end which I am sure was accidental. Was offered a discount on the wine (which we never asked for and would simply have preferred to have been able to buy the starter we wanted is the manager really not empowered to allow this simple request?!) Silly rules and niggling mistakes spoiled what would otherwise have been an enjoyable visit. The fact that the manageress was not empowered (or was simply unwilling) to agree to a simple request is a show stopper as far as I concerned and I would not risk re-visiting in case something similar happened. read more

First visit for quite a while, what a disaster. 4 ladies having a girlie lunch decided on the tasty sounding salads. My chicken, avocado and bacon arrived minus the bacon. A serving for all 3 of us was presented on a plate for us to divide amongst ourselves; an unappealing soggy, fatty affair. We asked for extra and this was at least well cooked but what were they thinking of. My salad had ridiculous lengths of soggy cucumber, green beans, broccoli but not a tomato nor lettuce in sight, perhaps I am just too old fashioned, and had been left in the dressing for far too long. The chicken pieces were tasty and I did discover 2 pieces of avocado. We were all in agreement that the salad dressing was basically unpleasant and far too much poured over what should have been a crisp, fresh salad. My 3 friends enjoyed their desserts, I requested some extra cream with mine which was brought to the table in a small dish. I poured this over my treacle tart and on tasting it thought there was something wrong but not trusting my own palate asked my friend what she thought and her immediate reaction was to say that the cream was 'off' and this was confirmed by a third lady. We asked for it to be returned to the kitchen and the poor waitress was sent back to tell us that there was nothing wrong with it, my dessert was not replaced, we were told that we would not be charged for it although our bill was not itemized. Our waitress tried very hard but we would certainly not recommend the restaurant, a shame as the fare served to the gentlemen on an adjacent table looked very nice indeed so perhaps we just chose the wrong dishes. read more
