Harris Teeter is still one of my favorite places to shop. And honestly, their prices have gotten more competitive. I often find better deals here now in their weekly circulars than at Food Lion, and the produce is ALWAYS much better than Food Lion. I like that they have many, many niche items -- stuff not many people probably want, but I appreciate. For example, the red velvet cake pettifors I got for my birthday - SO good, and they keep longer than regular cake, so I can enjoy them slowly. And really, the customer service can't be beat - the staff is always friendly and helpful. I accidentally left one of my bags recently, and by the time I got home and realized it, I figured it was a lost cause. Called over to the store, and the service desk had it for me! I am rating the pharmacy ony. My son insisted that we use the HT Pharmacy in Newport when we relocated as we had had a long possitive experience with a Williamsburg store. I have been using the Newport News location for his perscriptions only, for apoximatly 10 months now and it has been a constant disappointment. The staff is less than friendy, they are rude and insufferable. I went in to pick up a prescription tonight and was immediately told that there was nothing for my son. I remarked that he told me there was A tech begrudgingly checked and said to wait a few. I took the opportunity to ask the pharmacist about another prescription that was not complete days ago, and she snapped that she was sure it was not so but would she would check. I had to call my son to have him correct the name and count of the prescription needed, and when I stated "I'm sorry , that was my mistake on the name of the prescription, she replied "See, Don't mess". They are possibly the most unprofessional personnel that I have encountered. We are already looking into other pharmacies and I may have to start making the thirty-five minute commute back to Williamsburg to get compitant and friendly service. ​ read more

I stop in various pizza places in the area for a slice from time to time and they are overpriced and never that good. Harris teeter makes their pizza in store has several varieties and are quite good. I just had for lunch something that I bought last week and threw in the freezer. One was mozzarella with slices of tomatoes and one was sausage. I would highly recommend for people that buy large pizzas for their families and the price is very good read more

Was picking up ice cream and a coke for a sick friend on a Saturday. Starving myself I grabbed a stouffers which were 4 for 10 dollars. I know it's crap though I was hangry. Baked chicken and pizza are fantastic here! Service is on point and it doesn't get overly crowded either.

The store is hit and miss. The desk folks are very nice, although one person essentially ignored me. The other nice employee was very friendly though. The store absolutely stinks in some places where they don't have food so not sure what it is. The deli is most definitely not what we remember from back in 2005-2008 when we were here before. I understand that Kroger bought the chain so maybe it's just an expensive version of Kroger but without what made HT good. I don't go to this particular grocery store because it's closer to my house- I pass other grocery stores to go to this one. The store employees here are friendly, last night our cashier Tracy was wonderful and conversational. It wasn't busy last night we tend to go later after 9pm so we can avoid the peak hours around dinner time. The store is clean and they do pizza Mondays $7.99 pizza and sushi Friday's which has $5 sushi. The Starbucks in the store is mostly a miss as no one is ever there and someone has to come from the deli area even when the Starbucks is "open". The VIC specials are the things to watch as their grocery prices aren't a great deal regular price. They do have some great foreign foods especially Indian choices. Absolutely my preferred grocery in the Hidenwood Newport News area. read more

Complaint against the butcher department. I had picked up some (16) strip steaks. They are normally about 7 inches by 3 inches by 1.5 inches. I requested that they be cut in half, and demonstrated with my hand that I wanted them 3.5x3x1.5 inches. I was told to come back in about 15 minutes. What I got back was 7x3x0.75. I see some negative reviews which I could probably understand if I haven't shopped in this area for a year and a half. This location by far has the best produce and food selection that I have seen. This store is head and shoulders above Food Lion. Better selection and quality than the competition. I'm from California and this store most closely resembles the kind of grocery stores that California has. The staff are generally friendly, the store is clean, and they variety of products is good. My only "complaint" is the often empty shelves and sometimes I can't buy the same product twice. I understand the pandemic has affected everyone and grocery stores are certainly not exempt. I definitely go out of my way to shop at this store and they will continue to have my business. read more

The fresh soup and deli section can easily give Whole Foods' one a run for their money. Slightly cheaper but the same high quality on offer, you cannot go wrong grabbing a bite to eat here. I'm not a member of Harris Teeter's program and this was my first time shopping in one, but I got to the check out with 6 soups and a breakfast bar. It came to a total of $30 something with each soup being 4.99. The lady helping on self service asked if I had a store card or was a member, to which I said no - but said "let me help you out with some savings then." Expecting a mere few dollars off, I was shocked when my total was reduced to $18. I'm coming back here FOR SURE. Along with Piggly Wiggly, Harris Teeter has one of the great names for a retail food company. The store itself is a large format supermarket that feels like a warehouse, but has most of what you need for your household supplies - large green grocer area, good deli, and dairy/frozen food zones that make an effort to offer variety. Seems my brother in law knows many of the people who work here by name. I don't think that kind of familiarity happens farther north, at least I have never experienced it. This HT is closest to home, and seems a satisfactory choice if Wegmann, Trader Joe, or Whole Foods are not available. Besides, when you look at the sign out front and start to say the name, you suddenly find yourself singing ditties using everything that rhymes with, "Harris Teeter." read more

I love Harris Teeter! We do most of our family shopping here and I can tell you from quite a lot of experience that they go out of their way to provide excellent customer service. If you buy something that has gone bad, they will replace it and wave the charge for both. That's one example of many I won't go into for the sake of brevity. My wife coupons, and regularly saves decent sums of money upon checkout, especially when she does so in conjunction with the Harris Teeter VIP sales. It pays to be organized and detail-oriented (or married to someone who is). The store is bright and spacious and basically nice to be in. The lunch area includes a pizza counter, deli, sushi counter, and it's all pretty good. Not the best of these things around, but more than adequate in a pinch. Everyone there is helpful and friendly, and there's a option to order online and just pick everything up later, delivered right to your car. Overall, we're very happy to have this place right near us. read more

As a Student at CNU, this location is easy and convenient. Although, I find the prices to be 1-2 dollars higher than any other grocery store in Newport News. They typically never have enough registers opened and the self check out line is always outrageously long. Overall, the store is very clean, employees are friendly, selection is great, and prices aren't that bad. However, after my experience yesterday, I probably won't continue to shop at this location. Yesterday I placed a deli order using the Harris Teeter app. I saw that Boars Head cheese was on sale, $2 off per pound and cheaper than Harris Teeter brand, so I ordered 4 lbs of 2 types of cheese and some ham (the app said the order would be about $20). When my boyfriend went to pick it up the order, he noticed that the label had the order at full price and was then told by employees that the prices on the app do not "necessarily" apply to the location (even though I placed the order for pickup at that location, which also happens to be the "my store" location on the app). He showed the employees the prices on the app and they said there was nothing they could do (mind you, the order was already sliced and ready). We ended up paying about $40 for the order, an order I wouldn't have even placed had I not seen the sale on the app! I was very frustrated, disappointed, and felt cheated out of $20 as I wouldn't have ordered so much if it wasn't on sale. Additionally, the order was shoved into the bag and is now super difficult to use/pull apart the slices since it is in one huge stack (which happens every time we order from there; how hard is it to put wax paper in-between?!). This isn't the first time we have had issues with the deli. We will not be placing orders with the deli in the future. The fact that it carries Boars Head is the primary reason we even use Harris Teeter as our grocery store, but we cannot continue to be ripped off. read more

This Harris Teeter is very convenient as it is right across the street from CNU. It is a great to run across the street and grab a quick item or two but I don't generally do most of my grocery shopping here as it is overpriced. For example, avacados are $2.50 while they are usually 79 cents elsewhere. It appears to be an older store as it hasn't been renovated and they don't have all the prepared food options that the newer stores have like the $9.99 lobster and prime rib nights. The lines for the self checkouts are usually very long and even though they have two self checkout areas one is usually closed. Some of the cashiers/self checkout attendants are kind of rude as well, however, I have had numerous positive interactions with the pharmacy and deli staff. read more

UPDATE - I'm reminded by someone whose judgment I respect that HT gave ice away during Hurricane Isabel. Also I remembered that I got my luggage there as part of a giveaway. Rating adjusted up accordingly. Harry stays Happy. The best grocery store in Newport News, its opening in the mid 1990s set a standard that looks more impressive every year, as other local supermarkets struggled to keep up (Farm Fresh) or fell further and further behind in quality until just recently (Food Lion....or Loin, as I used to see written on checks when I worked there). It's clean, it's cool, it's open 24 hours, the premises seem well lit and well ordered, it has really good seafood options, the produce section is well stocked at almost all times (late Sunday night being a possible exception), they almost always have a full rack of free Harry the Happy Dragon sugar cookies, which hit the sweet spot between, er, sweet and sugary. Lines are pretty much non-existent at the self checkout (or maybe this is an illusion because this store skews older than the one in Charlottesville). They also have a RedBox, one of the few locations where one can converse with strangers in our increasingly atomistic age of SMART cars and wide screen televisions. So why only 4 stars? Well, Teeters offer (or should offer) delicious sandwich specials for $2.50. I ordered a cheesesteak (the special) on Wednesday night about a month ago, and it was terrible- I didn't finish it. The woman who made it was also working at the meat slicer, and said she wasn't used to making sandwiches, but they didn't have anyone else on duty, which makes me think other people don't get sandwiches there....maybe because they aren't very good? Anyways, it was a poorly made sandwich, but the meat was very oily, and they didn't have hoagie dressing. HT can get away with pricing sammys at $2.50 because of the other items purchased by people who buy them (this is called a loss leader). Until the HT makes better sandwiches, however, it's just going to go as a loss....of a star. Beyond that however, HT rules all your grocery needs in Newport News. read more

Made a big order for a birthday party consisting of 5+ party platters. Everything was ready on time and my orders were correct. Someone even helped me take everything to the car. Everyone was so professional, pleasant, and easy going. I appreciate all the hard work in putting the orders together to make for a deliciously-filled birthday party meal. No matter how early ahead I call for my medication to be transferred to here, they never ever have it. It doesn't help to call every day and check up on it because the pharmacist will just say they are working on it, up until the last possible day when you're hit with the "unfortunately we do not have your medication at this time." I always wind up having to Uber to a nearby Rite Aid to get my refill. This time it was already too late in the evening and now I am just going to have to go without meds tonight and be sick tomorrow. One extra star bc I love the grocery part of the store read more

Harris teeter has wonderful customer service. The lady at the seafood counter and the gentleman are awesome. The always help with information about parring dishes together. I always buy my steaks from there and the butcher's always check to see what I need or get what I can't find. I love Harris Teeter! Do you think I'd really give it a bad review? Anyway, Harris Teeter is Harris Teeter. Same open 24/7, hot bars, anitpasto bars, salads n' soup bars,delis, florist, and lovely produce as the one in the Burg. However, this one does not have the breakfast buffet in the early mornings as the one in WBurg does. The parking here is also much smaller and the entry point can be disastrous at times. The crowd here tends to be younger since CNU is close by but overall the store is clean and still the same great selection with the exception of the Asian to-go foods, which I noticed this HT still carries the tofu dishes and the one in Williamsburg hasn't had them for the past several times I've visited. Also, the produce here especially during the Farmer's Market season is not as nicely presented :/ Either way, love Harris Teeter. read more

I guess not everyone can shop at Harris Teeter because it is upscale shopping for most of their products. When they have their sales however it is worth your trip there. Their buy two get three free is fantastic. They have a clean store, well lit with everything in it's place. Samples throughout of fresh fruit and deli items. The customer service was stellar. I have grocery stores closer to my home, but I will purposely come here anyway. I purchased smoked turkey from the deli (delicious) and sushi rolls (also fabulous and on sale for $5), and the sample station of sausages was super satisfying. The salad bar was great also. The store is clean and set-up nicely. I love how it is so spacious, I don't get that claustrophobic feeling I feel when I go to other markets. Everyone that worked there was extremely helpful and friendly, that alone makes me want to return, and to top it off the food is quality and fresh. read more

Got 10 lobster tails from the seafood department. Took them home and began taking the meat out of the shell. Everyone in the house said what is that disgusting smell. Turns out they were all rotten. Overall not a terrible place to shop. However, the restroom is disgusting and if you ever come during the "odd" hours to shop there is never enough cashiers. Most times the self checkout area is open but I have been there many times with only 2 of these registers working. one of the managers at this location is truly disgusting. he went to a former employee who is a family member of mine to talk bad on not only me but my mother as well. one night i went into harris teeter with my mom when the manager had recognized me from working with him at foodlion (i worked there from 16-19) he was telling me to put in an application and he would bring me in. turns out later he went to this former employee and talked horrible about me, while telling this former employee what he THINKS he's heard about me. he also had the never to bring up mental illness as a joke saying i would use it as an excuse. truly nasty and i don't know why harris teeter allows managers to talk like this about people he doesn't even know. So, I went to this Harris Teeter which used to be my favorite store until Yesterday. I drove all the way from Buckroe for the shopping experience with my daughter. Well first off as I am looking at the honey one of the store employees steps right in front of me and begins to work on the self as if we weren't even there reaching for the honey and without an excuse me or anything. So we waited for him to finish and then got our honey. Wouldn't you believe it that there was more to come!! As we are at the deli section getting lunch meat. I turn around and look to order a pizza for my daughter for dinner. As I am waiting for the Pizza Clerk to assist me time just continues to tick by. Some 4 or so minutes go by and he keeps looking at me and saying not a word. So I turn back around and talk with my daughter who says wow Papa he was rude. I ensure her that not all people are that way and maybe even though he was looking at directly at me and I said excuse me to him to get his attention. He may not have seen or heard me. Then a caucasian male walks up at that time and the clerk said: " well hello Sir how are you and what may I get for you". So I waited until they were done talking and then asked the Clerk why he refused to wait on me as though I weren't even there. He began to mumble something under his breath and with attitude, he began to approach me with complete disregard for manners or his own safety had I been an ignorant person. After walking away I asked another employee at the deli for a store manager to come. In which someone did come and she spoke with the young man. After she walked away though the caucasian shopper encourages more bad behavior from the young clerk by telling him loud enough for my daughter and I to hear. When I first entered the store, there was a terrible smell of bad fish. The produce employee was terrible, she didn't smile, say hello or was in anyway friendly. I asked if they had nectarines and was told if you don't see it, then I guess not. The oranges that was the sample of the day must have been from the day before. The orange pieces were dried out. I did not go any further in the store. Friends and I were looking forward to the store opening in Hampton but given the welcoming odor, indifference towards customers and poor attitudes, after telling others about my experience, we will continue shopping at Food Lion or Walmart. read more

It's a very nice Harris Teeter. My husband and I use their online shop and pick up service every week for a few months now as it's a convenient way to get groceries. The younger employees are nice and they are typically the ones who bring out the groceries and load them for us. I generally have no problem with my order, except for a few rare times where, for example, something was not properly substituted or they forgot something small. Not a big deal, people make mistakes. Unfortunately, the worst service I've had there was with some people I believe were to be managers. Both times, managers were rude or seemed impatient or annoyed with handling our order. Recently, I realized I'd be very late picking my order up and called ahead and said I'd be late. The employee who answered the phone was very courteous and happily told us it wasn't a problem and we could pick up any time no later than 11. When I got there at 10, I learned that there was some miscommunication and the manager on duty at the time had no idea. What irritated me the most was that she assumed I never called and took out her frustration on me, laughing about how ridiculous it was I was coming so late and tried to chew me out for not calling. I informed her that I did, and she apologized for the whole situation. I'm still irked by it all because none of it made sense to me. It never occurred to anyone why an order that was supposed to be picked up at 7:30 hadn't been picked up yet? No one bothered to check on it? Very strange. All in all, my husband and I will continue to use the service as it's very convenient. We won't be late anymore to avoid this type of issue. I'm rating it 3/5 because it's a nice store and the service is convenient as they call to tell you the order is ready and they also ask if it's okay to substitute out of stock items, but being treated poorly because of a miscommunication on their part has lowered my opinion on the store. read more
