Ok so it's not a dark ally or some secret entrance, but the main entrance to the Gordon Village Fruit Market is not on the main road (Pacific Hwy), but on the one-way street behind the Gordon Village by the car park next to the station. This specialty market wholesale their fresh fruits and vegetables so their prices are less than your retail market and the quality is fantastic. They have weekly specials that help out even more and they are bringing in new lines of deli products every week. It's one of our great little local finds.

The best bit of it being quiet is that you don't have to queue too long for the bacon & egg roll or coffee AND you can really get to know the people who work there. Sadly for me I can't get there every week: bit of a market freak so I have to share the love and explore others but if you haven't gone, give it a go cause honestly, it's worth it. A bit of a stickler for looking at ingredients on packaging I need to befriend someone who reads Chinese/Japanese/Cantonese/Mandarine so that I know what I'm buying exactly. Okay, so, thing the first: CHEAP-ASS FRUIT & VEG. We're talking $1.99kg tomatoes, $2.50kg cucumbers, $1.20 bunches of coriander, $1.50 bundles of delicious garlic shoots that I've only just learned how to cook, and every kind of almost-costs-more-not-to-buy-them bok choys, choy sums, and about a billion other variant of the same. I buy all my fresh schtuff here now, way cheaper than Coles & Woolies and really good quality. Freezers, entire freezers, of dumplings! Welcome to the promised land, son. Pre-packed, wafer-thin beef and pork rolls to drop into your instant ramen noodles, millions of soy and oyster sauces, billions of chilli oils, gummis, Poki, bamboo shoots, it's happy hour at the freaking flavour factory and you've got the golden ticket. Of course, at least half of this place is things that I don't recognise and will probably never try (read: weird, so weird) but I try one new thing every time I come here. Doesn't always pay off, but 1 in 3 times it does. Like the chilli oil with cured pork chunks that's now my new favourite condiment, holler. Just don't buy the garlic that's imported from China - it's bleached, and the girl at Cornersmith Picklery told me it goes bright blue when pickled, naaaasty.

Our usual location wasn't open so after picking up the paper we walked by the fruit market and saw that they had some fresh flowers in the front of their store. The couple who own the shop helped us pick out a nice combination of flowers to put together - and even pulled some from the back for us. The bouquet turned out very pretty and on top of that the man said "I like you" and threw in a free avocado (it's a fruit and vegetable market, you know). I've been back multiple times (mostly on Sundays) and the arrangements are always fresh and beautiful. So far we've also gotten a free mandarin, apple and grapes (again, all delicious). They are open 7 days from 7am - 7pm so we can always count on them being open.

Any request I have ever made, is never too much trouble and I can always depend on being able to rely on the quality of the meats I've had supplied. They also stock a good selection of ready prepared meals, sauces, marinades , pasta, fresh eggs, and a good range of fresh fruit and vegetables. They make their own range of sausages, all of which are amazing. I recommend this butchery to all my friends.

It was a bit pricey and feel the açai bowl needs to be improved, not sure what ingredients are used but possibly less coconut water and maybe adding a frozen banana would help make this guilt-free snack tastier. In the past, I've purchased some of their Red Mill products but this visit was strictly açai time only. I'll give this place one more try..
