Okay, I am over a year late in responding an August 23, 2017 article in the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer about Harris County, GA sheriff Mike Jolley. He has time and time again demonstrated him self to be a freaking idiot, so I have to comment.
While on the way home from dinner with his wife at Ezell's Catfish Cabin in nearby Columbus, Georgia, the sheriff came across a man on the side of the road trying to kill a large rattlesnake. The sheriff stopped to assist the man, who didn't have a gun. Sheriff Jolley, the chief law enforcement officer in Harris County, took his wife's small .380 caliber pistol and tried to shoot the snake. At least he had sense enough not to use his service weapon. He fired at the snake 4 times, and missed all 4 times. And this is the guy Harris County voters elected as Sheriff?
Several vehicles stopped, and according to Jolley, all had guns. One of them "got close enough to the snake's head to deliver a fatal shot," the article reads. Jolly exclaimed, "I am one proud Sheriff! I am a 2nd Amendment supporter and so are many of my citizens...." Let's review the 2nd Amendment: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of the free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Nothing says well-regulated militia like a law enforcement officer and a gang of gun toting citizens firing haphazardly at a rattlesnake on a public highway.
According to the CDC, about 7,000 people a year are bitten by snakes per year, but usually only 5 or less people a year die of a snake bite. Jolley and his gun wielding militia had a far greater chance of being killed by a wayward bullet from one of their guns, or being hit by a passing car, than being killed by the rattlesnake they were all intent on killing. If they had left the snake alone, it would have gone on its way and everything would have been fine. By confronting the snake, they all greatly increased their chances of being bitten by the snake. While rarely fatal, venomous snake bites are very painful and can cause permanent injuries. In addition, a snake bite with envenomation can lead to a lengthy hospital stay and over $100,000 in medical bills.
The article doesn't say what kind of rattlesnake it was, but it had to be either an eastern diamondback rattler or a timber rattler. Both are diminishing in numbers due to development, habitat loss, and senseless killings such as the one referred to in this article. However, there are plenty more in Harris County. I lived in Columbus from 1990 to 1995, and my former sister in law and brother in law lived in Cataula (which is in Harris County) for many years. I spent a lot of time in Waverly Hall, Cataula, and Hamilton. The county is heavily wooded. There are plenty more rattlesnakes in Harris County, and Sheriff Jolley and his gun carrying militia made the county no more safe by killing this snake.
Jolley prides himself on being politically correct. He used to have a sign in front of his office stating "Warning: Harris County is politically. We say: Merry Christmas, God Bless America and In God We Trust." We salute our troops and our flag. If this offends you...LEAVE!" Funny. I thought law enforcement officers were supposed to serve and protect all citizens, not just those whose political or religious beliefs jive with the sheriff's own beliefs.
On another occasion, Jolly had a sign in front of his office that said "if you kill someone in Harris County, you might get killed back." Advocating vigilante justice. Nice.
The Harris County Sheriff's department website has a link entitled Politically Incorrect" that links to Jolley's former website where he hawked his "politically incorrect" t-shirts. The site is no longer active, and the domain name is for sale. Maybe Jolley came to his senses and realized that trying to profiteer off of his elective office was problematic, but that is unlikely. More likely, he shut the site down due to poor sales.
Jolley may be proud of his gun-toting constituents now, but when some lunatic takes his wife estranged hostage in Cataula or robs a bank in Hamilton, or a kid sneaks a gun into Harris County High School, he may reconsider.
I predict that someday it will end badly for this gun happy, flippant, and moronic sheriff. Sooner or later, he will not be able to get out of the way of his own stupidity. read more
