Nice gastro-pub in a village regarded by many as the prettiest village in Lincolnshire…read more The pub actually faces its village, and the church, away from the main road. On the main road, is a large car park, which opens onto the pub's beer garden and the rear entrance. The pub itself dates to the 17th Century and is grade II listed. The facade is pretty as a postcard, with creeper growing over the stone walls. Inside, a fairly thorough makeover gives it a more modern feel, with white and pastels complementing the wooden furniture. They have an a la Carte and fixed price menu. The offering varies from sandwiches and light bites to full meals. I had the garlic mushrooms with grated Parmesan on brioche toast (£7.95), friends had the Locally Sourced Ham, Free Range Fried Eggs & Chips (£10.95); and Beer Battered Haddock with Chips, Peas & Tartar Sauce (£13.95). Although it's a bit pricey, everyone enjoyed the meal and the quality of the food was very good. Service was reasonably quick and efficient. They serve a good range of real ales, too. Recommended.

I had the tempura prawns to start - a little pricey for what you get, but they were perfectly crispy and yummy. For main I had the salmon en croute - it was packed full of salmon and absolutely delicious! The restaurant is very cute & cosy and I would definitely be happy to return.

The Splash delivers the kind of food that reminds you why simple done right always wins…read more The Grimsby beer battered haddock is the standout. Fresh flaky fish wrapped in a crisp golden batter that actually stays light, served with proper cut chips, mushy peas, and a squeeze of fresh lemon that ties it all together. This is classic coastal comfort food executed with confidence. The homemade steak and ale pie is just as impressive. Tender chunks of steak slow cooked in a rich ale gravy, topped with a golden pastry crust that feels handmade, not factory. Creamed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and beef gravy complete the plate and turn it into a full on comfort feast. Warm service, honest portions, and food that speaks for itself. If you are in Louth and want a meal that delivers on flavor and tradition, this is a must stop.

Don't try and jump the ford..seen it hilariously attempted and SPASH! Drive through it. A good lunch can be had at the Royal Oak in Little Cawthorpe which is known locally as The Splash. Newly furbished bars, restaurants and 6 en-suite bedrooms. It also has a lovely lawned beer garden and childrens play area. It dates from the 17th century, and still retains its wonderful cosy and traditional country pub atmosphere. The Splash is approached through a shallow ford (the real Splash) in the village of Little Cawthorpe on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty just two miles from the Georgian market town of Louth, Lincolnshire. Little Cawthorpe is arguably the prettiest village on this eastern fringe of the Wolds and the name of its inn, the Royal Oak (together with countless others around the country) commemorates the occasion in 1651 when King Charles II hid for a day and a night in an oak tree to escape his enemies after the Battle of Worcester. A particularly picturesque part of the village is the ford, which provides the inn its alternative name of 'The Splash'. Both feature on the pub sign - and if you phone, the landlord and staff even answer 'The Splash'! Opposite the pub a house has a wall made entirely of wine bottles. At the other end of Little Cawthorpe the church stands on a hill above a large pond fed by seven springs. This is the source of the Long Eau, which flows over the 'splash' near the inn and eventually onwards to Saltfleet. The area has been landscaped over the years but even from the road some of the springs can still be seen bubbling away. The little church of St Helen's is quite modern as churches go, having been built in 1860. It is strikingly designed in red and black brick, though nowadays some may feel it is not too sympathetic with its surroundings. Across the road is the Manor House. This is a private property but may be glimpsed from the road and is a fine example, with its Dutch gables, of Tudor brickwork; it is dated 1673. Exploring the areaTwo miles away Muckton has lost its Holy Trinity, a church that had been rebuilt in 1878 but still contained original Norman archways when demolished in 1983. Now only the poignant, abandoned churchyard with a few gravestones remains along with a still splendid, though lonely looking lytchgate. Across the road on a gate pillar is a rare Victorian letterbox. It is an deal location for walking or cycling, and there is an 18 hole championship golf course 1 mileaway.

What can I say about the King's Arms? I'm at home here. When we moved to the UK, honestly our most…read moredesired feature was walking distance to a pub. We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

***Avoid at all costs*** ABSOLUTELY APPALLING…read more I popped in for an early evening meal with my Dad and siblings on Wednesday 14/08/19 at around 5pm and I have to admit this was THE worst restaurant experience we've ever had. For starters, all of the staff look incredibly young and inexperienced and totally disinterested in what they're doing and do not know the definition of customer service, that was blatantly clear the second we got there. The waitress took our drinks order at the table and 20mins+ we were still without our drinks until we went up to start retrieving them ourselves. Not just that, an incredibly rude, ignorant, cocky and arrogant young man behind the bar that didn't even look old enough to serve alcohol messed up our very simple food and drink order. Explaining how he couldn't figure out how to take the drinks off the tab so we could all pay for our own meals and individual drinks. As well as not listening and asking me to repeat my order of 2 meals and 2 drinks more than 3 times - not a terribly difficult task. Not just that, he was very short and sarcastic and never even offered me a receipt so bad practice and manners alike. He didn't even know how to put chips through on the till! Come on, no basic training?? And that's just the tip of the iceberg! My Dad then had the same performance when paying for his meal and drink, the rude man becoming flustered and agitated and increasingly more rude and it was written all over his face! Which was even more unprofessional when my Dad was visibly getting more and mote frustrated with how rude and incompetent he was. The young dark skinned lass then tried to help and to be honest she tried her best but again, so rude! What's wrong with this place? Are poor manners one of the requirements to get a job here or do you just have to be under 20??? My Dad then stormed off after this fiasco and my brother went to place his order. This is where the major mistakes were made. The same young lad then put 2 meals (the lasagne) through as lunch time prices which are much cheaper and about half the price of the evening menu, but we wanted the evening meals as that was the only menu we had seen as that was all that was on our table. They then had the cheek to try and blame us for their mistake rather than admitting he was new, had done it wrong, and would just correct it. And if it had been me in his shoes, I would have compensated the customer by disregarding the price different or a gesture like this to make up for the headache this experience had been so far...and we'd only just ordered! The young lad then told us right fine you still owe us £6+ for the difference so you need to pay that once you've eaten...why not deal with and resolve it there and then?? Logic?? Once my brother sat back down and told us of the price issue, I went back up and asked politely for my receipt, for him to say abruptly "Why what's wrong with yours now??" It turns out nothing as it was actually correct surprisingly enough, however I, as a paying customer, had every right to request this to check I had been charged correctly. They then had to go and finally get a "manager" as neither of them "had a clue how to get a receipt from a past order". I was then met by the most sour-faced, middle aged miserable snootiest "manager" who was so rude and spoke to me and her staff like shit when asking what we all wanted from her, after we so rudely interrupted whatever she was doing whilst hiding in the back for the 45 mins prior. My Dad then requested to speak to the manager directly once I returned to the table and told him what had happened. The manager was the most horrible, insincere, disinterested, argumentative, aggressive, overly defensive and ignorant woman I have ever had the displeasure of speaking to. She outright called us liars when explaining the issue with the 20mins+ wait on drinks blaming us for not knowing it was table service when a sign on the wall above our table says please order at the bar with your table number?? My Dad queried if the young staff were new and inexperienced as it showed, he said how disorganised and unprofessional most of them were, how they lacked manners and had no idea what customer service was - all bar the young blonde waitress. She was ignorant enough to point blank deny this like she's never heard this before (i've since read a lot of their other Trip Advisor reviews most of which are horrendous due to inexperierced/rude/disorganised stuff with no leadership and useless management and mediocre food at best - common theme here then!!). She offered no solution whatsover and stormed off as our food started to come out. Food was actually quick to come out but was okay at best. Mediocre/average quality and the same for the portions. Definitely nothing special but definitely overpriced for what it was. Very disappointed and never coming back! ***AVOID!***
