This is a fairly difficult hike. It starts at the equestrian trail head inside Beacon Rock State Park. Follow the equestrian trail until you reach West Hardy Ridge Trail. Follow that trail, which is an old road, for quite some time. When you reach the end of that road, it turns into a single track hiking trail marked by a sign that says foot traffic only.
From this point you start getting some serious vertical, and will soon arrive at a four way intersection at the top of the ridge. Take a right at this intersection, and follow the spur trail for about 3/4 of a mile for some seriously stunning views. Do not miss this little out and back spur. When you return back to the four way intersection, take a right and follow East Hardy Ridge Trail back down to the equestrian path.
The total distance of this loop is about 9 1/2 miles per my gps, and you'll get about 2500 feet of vertical. It's definitely a good workout. We hiked this in February and it was not too muddy. However there's enough elevation here that there could easily be snow at the top during normal February conditions. It sounds like there are excellent wildflowers to be found here during the spring. Will probably return.
The parking fee is $10 unless you have a Discover Pass. So don't forget to bring some cash. Also make sure that you remember to turn back on the equestrian Trail. This trail connects to the full Hamilton Mountain Trail system, and it would be easy to end up at the other parking lot for Hamilton Mountain. We actually had to give a guy who made a wrong turn and ended up at our parking lot a ride back to his car at the other parking lot.
I highly recommend this hike. It's a nice mix of old roads,single-track trail, ridgeline views, and nice vertical. read more
