There's also a picnic shelter and a nature trail that is up off the lake, more wooded. Dogs are supposed to be leashed but have found that people use the nature trail and take dogs off leash up there, even though they're not supposed to. The lake trail does go close to the water's edge at several points and the dogs can take a quick dip - but no swimming for humans! There's also a boat launch and looks like a great place to go kayaking.

I love 30A and the turquoise waters of the gulf, however, there's something about that darker, more packed natural sand covered in natural seashells. Quite different from the white sand beaches, but like I said, I almost appreciated this more because it feels more authentic. And let's be honest, a trip to the beach always feels refreshing no matter where! Luckily enough, we picked a day that wasn't too crowded at all and the weather was perfect. Couldn't have asked for a better experience here, and also, shoutout to the super sweet husband and wife who insisted on taking a family photo for us!

The FHU's worked flawlessly. They pick up trash from your site. They had a live music duo and a giant bubble machine for the kids Memorial Day Weekend. Even then, it was still quiet each night. Nice little trail to a local coffee shop house and a very cute little "fairy island". Plenty of different sites. No pull thru's available. We had a back-in that was very big, easily handling our 42 ft fifth wheel and tow truck. And frankly, it offered more privacy with the trees and shrubs between sites. We enjoyed our stay here. The pothole and the circuitous exit were the only negatives. The exit can be a bit tricky to navigate, particularly if there is a rig parked at the office. After the office you need to take a weird left turn, then you have to avoid any incoming traffic. Oh and if your GPS wants you to turn left out of the park or do a U-turn down the road - go right and use the Military Cutoff Road.

The grounds are beautiful, peaceful, and rich with history. Even though only some of the flowers are blooming right now, there is still plenty to enjoy--towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, winding paths, ponds, sculptures, and the feeling that you've stepped back into old Wilmington. The famous Airlie Oak and the historic chapel make it feel more like wandering through a living postcard than just another garden. Airlie dates back to the late 1800s and was created by Sarah and Pembroke Jones before becoming a public garden preserved for future generations. The gardens are well kept, easy to stroll through, and especially lovely this time of year with the Azalea Festival season beginning. It is the kind of place where you slow down, take a deep breath, and remember that nature did landscaping long before homeowners associations started issuing warning letters. The one drawback--and for us older folks it is a real one--is that there simply are not enough restrooms spread throughout the grounds. With so much walking involved, having a few more bathrooms around the gardens would make a tremendous difference and would make the experience more comfortable for seniors and families. Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. A beautiful, historic Wilmington treasure that is absolutely worth visiting, especially in the spring--just be sure to make a restroom stop before setting out on the trails.
