Hmmmmm I was pretty sure I had reviewed this place just after I visited.... Guess not.... Ok so I…read morelove the idea of the place and it has lots of potential. They sell burgers and wings etc and I love that you get kitchen roll on the table. They get 3 stars because I feel they need to work on their food a bit. When I sat down I got a doors and was given some complimentary popcorn. They have blue moon on draft as well as the doors and some other American beers in bottles. The menu is your typical American style restaurant, burgers, Philly cheese steaks, hot dogs, fries and chicken wings. I opted for the Philly cheese steak and some fries. This is where it goes wrong a bit, the bread was cheap cheap cheap, really fluffy and over dry and breaking up, I'd go so far as to say it may have been day old bread.... The steak was tough and overlooked but the flavour itself was quite nice. The chips were good and I was given a bit pit of Mayo. My waitress was a wee star, I just thought she was brilliant at her job and she gave brilliant customer service and she's the reason for 3 rather than 2 stars, I would have given 4 but I want to give them something to work towards, as the food must be as good as the customer service. I would return again but would have no hesitation sending back if I had the same bread issues again. They should really think of getting a local baker to produce their bread rather than buying bulk from the catering supplier.

The ribs, pulled pork, and brisket were excellent. One downside: someone needs to give them a better Cole slaw recipe. It is not good--nothing but cabbage and mayo. Add a little vinegar and pepper to make it bearable. Also the music might have been a little loud, but I am an old guy.

I am stunned that I didn't post this review sooner - it actually dates back to before the lockdown…read morebut I checked with a friend and no nothing has changed - it is still great! The restaurant is located on the penthouse levels of a high rise building close to the University of Swansea and perhaps more importantly (very) close to the sea and the beach. The views (so long as the weather is clear) is SPECTACULAR both day and night. Amazing m. So good in fact that we went twice in our 3 day stay. Oh yes the food? Very good, certainly the steaks etc. Service was excellent and the prices very reasonable - what more could you want? Just go - you will not regret it :)

The Grape & Olive is a restaurant at the top of the Meridian Tower in Swansea, offering panoramic…read moreviews over the city and the marina. What's in the Meridian tower, you might ask? I had no idea...I thought maybe it houses television studios but discovered actually it's just an apartment building. Let's get down to three experience...you take a lift up to the 28th floor- it's a small lift so expect to wait a little bit. When we got to the restaurant we were seated in a booth facing the view- if you can get one of these seats I would highly recommend. Otherwise there are tables and chairs or bar stools if you're looking for just a drink. The restaurant itself is surprisingly informal-jeans and a sweater was just fine. I was expecting something a bit more refined- maybe some nice white tablecloths and good glassware. Instead I found pine tables and clunky cutlery, which made it feel like a cafeteria with an incredible view. The decor is just rather out of date and could do with a refurb. The view is pretty cool as you have the marina directly below- we arrived at about 6pm just before sunset so we got to see it in the daylight and after dark. To start with we ordered two cocktails (there are just 2 on the menu anyway) before perusing the menu. I opted for the scallops with pea purée followed by the lamb rack, while my friend Elle opted for the pigeon salad followed by the fillet steak medium rare. All washed down with a nice glass of red. Scallops were decent although I was quite envious of the pigeon starter! The lamb rack was really delicious but you can't really go wrong with lamb in Wales! Elle said she enjoyed the steak so all in all it was a good meal. To finish we ordered some ice cream and the cheese platter- I'm obsessed with cheese so devoured it!

The Gatehouse

A family holiday in Wales inevitably involves castles and or course rain but you come to expect…read morethat even in August. We came to Kilwelly to see the Castle and frankly if you like that sort of thing it's a good one, lots of stairs and dark holes to explore and great views. Needing lunch and the surrounding streets looking very much like the suburbs we asked at the gift shop and were told there were a few tea shops and chippy straight down Castle street. The first place we came to was The Gatehouse just outside the south gate, usually I wouldn't go for the place closest to a tourist attraction but it was raining and the boy child was in dire need of feeding. The menu listed toasties so we were sold. Inside it was compact and cosy but not cluttered, turns out it was a pub which had closed and was re-opened as a little cafe in May 2010. The decor was quaint but not frilly, with local art on the walls for sale. There was sandwiches, paninis, jackets, soups, omelettes, a couple of burgers and a couple of mains. They also had a pretty nice looking breakfast menu, nothing was more than £7 and a pot of tea for 2 was only £1.80! Being a city dweller with a bad Starbucks habit I was stunned. My husband had the local Lamb Burger, my son a Cheese and Ham Toastie and I had a cheese and ham omelette. Including a pot of tea for three £15. The food was truly truly scrumptious, nothing fancy no pouncing about, just really nice home made fresh food, presented well by a lovely smiley waitress. The burger was tasty and well cooked, the omelette was light and loads of filling and the toastie had some of the nicest ham and well rounded cheddar as you'd find in any gastro pub, no plastic ham and flavourless plastic cheese here thank you! Having thoroughly enjoyed our lunch we decided to stay for pudding, here would be my only and rather small complaint. The boy child had a scoop of ice cream and whilst we like Movenpick, there are so many nice and local dairies in this part of Wales it would have been pleasing to have had one of those surely? And at £2 it was the only expensive thing there. The homemade blackberry pie (They called it tart) was a triumph not too sweet not too heavy, fruit still holding it's shape and crispy pastry of the softest, crumbliest kind -yum yum yum with another pot of tea. With full bellies and unbattered wallet, we returned to the car happy to drive home in the rain! If you're in the area and castles are on your agenda Kilwelly is well worth a visit as is the lovely little Gatehouse cafe!
