I would give 0 if I could. NOTE to store: My son inadvertently dropped off 3 books that had sentimental value yesterday when he was dropping off a bunch of other books. When I noticed within and hour, he went back to get them. They told him they had already been processed and boxed. All the other items he dropped off were still sitting at the counter. I knew one of the books was old (hence had been in family for 60 years so sentimental), but I never thought your company would be so low as to not return it. I new something was fishy when the only 3 books that weren't supposed to go were only ones processed. I hope the $100 profit you get from my family's Childrens Bible Story book and the 2 copies of The Giving Tree with personal notes to me in it are worth it. My son is devastated of his accident, and I am missing the only thing I had from my grandparents. read more

My family and I are fanatics of this half price books. We have been coming since i was a little kid! They would do a summer reading program where you could earn books based on the number of pages you read. It helped inspire a passion of reading in me from a young age!! We popped in again while all home for Christmas break. The vibes were just as cozy as I remembered. The books are well organized into little alcoves by type so you can find exactly what you're interested in! I headed straight to the history section because that's what gets my passion and found instantly and armful of books I would love to buy, all at perfectly reasonable prices. All four of us found great deals on books we wanted to read. As an added bonus, my little sister found four books that all were the same color scheme for aesthetics. My brother even found a book that would be required reading for one of his courses next semester, saving him who knows how much money! The store is organized, clean, well lit but cozy, and the people there working are always happy to help. There is a reason my family has been shopping this Half Price Books for years! I have taken many a book her for credit, they rarely give you more than 25 cents even for books that are recently out and you bought from them a month ago. I am always surprised too at some of the books they don't have, I spend way too much time trying to find books that are on my reading list. I typically end up asking an employee for help, they typically have a good attitude about it. My 3 star rating is really due to them just not having a lot of selection, sometimes they can order a book for you but it takes 1-3 weeks to arrive. I've had better luck buying books on eBay, they are normally buy 4 get one free and half the price of half price books, see what I did there? They do carry puzzles which is nice, a large selection of you enjoy a puzzle or two. They also carry other little things like signs to hang on walls and a few games. I'm grateful they are in town but they are certainly not my go to by any means. Starting on 2022 they went bagless, you much bring your own bag. read more

The staff proceeded to laugh at me. Worst part was I was behind them. They turned around and looked directly at me. Positives: clean store, organized well, great staff. Here's my big gripe, I took 4 boxes of books to sell, some worth quite more then what they offered. I know there were some more loved books in the stack and had no problems with them offering me less for those. But an $11 dollar offer on books, some still warped in cellophane was a little insulting. Did I take the offer, yes because I simply didn't have time to sell them in my own. Would I shop here, yes. Stopped in here today on a whim. I have been in the area many times before and always told myself that I would drop in. I was pretty amazed with the selection of books. I anticipated pseudo-discounted books that were essentially copies of things that were available anywhere. I was wrong. Today was the tail end of one of their big 40% off sales. I still found much more than I needed and had to force myself to put things back. I enjoy both fiction and nonfiction (politics, history, sociology and religion/philosophy). The prices were really good and they had TONS of kid's books as well. I found some books for my daughter and also a bunch for me. They also have puzzles, games, movies and music. I highly recommend stopping in. The entrance and facade are pretty boring and unappealing. But, you will love it when you stop in! read more

I was in town for the week and visited all the local half price books just to get a variety. I ended up looking at their vintage rack while I was there. The books on that rack are mostly two dollars, but there are several that range higher in price. I found a book that the white sticker had come off of. I ask the employee treating people and she said she had to ask the manager the price. She went over to the heavy set girl and asked her. She looked at me like I was stupid and said "it's two dollars". I loved back at her and told her "I was just checking because the books in their are different prices". She turned around and that was the end of that. Customer Service is not top at this store considering she was the manager. The store itself was number two in the area of the four I visited. They just got shadier and worse as the day went on. read more

Although my mind is racing at all the possibilities of what I can use that dollar for, I decided to reinvest it into another book. This is my second-favorite location (Wesport wins), they have a good variety and clearance section. Metcalf seems to over-picked and busy. Got to overhear some great employee bashing by other employees today. I wish they'd keep their dirty laundry off the sales floor. The place seemed a little ransacked today, but they were super busy gossiping, so you can't expect them to be tidying up. So I stopped here earlier this week to kill a bit of time, and it was such a mistake! Don't get me wrong, Half Price Books is amazing. The employees are friendly, and the prices are generally affordable, especially if you spend time digging through the clearance section. If you go in looking for something specific, they often have a copy. The problem was that I just was not prepared to spend so much money or find space to keep all the books I bought. Since I wasn't in a hurry, I had time to look through EVERYTHING. Browsing the shelves brought me back to my childhood years when reading was something I actually had time for. Nostalgically, I added book after book to my pile. Really I should have left when the stack of books I was carrying started to get too heavy, but there were just too many good options. After a couple of hours and a lot of breaks sitting on the floor and previewing different books, (which by the way is totally acceptable here or I hope so at least, no one looked at me weird so it's probably okay) I ended up putting back about half the stack and still spent far too much. So if you're a book lover like me, I highly recommend staying away unless you're prepared to invest a bit of time and money into the experience or you have a lot more self-control than I apparently do. read more

A great spot to pic up books at a great price. I would like to say I am an avid reader, but I tend to be more of an avid book buyer, walking out with piles each time when I have books at home that I still have not read. I just can not resist myself! A lot of people suggest the library to me, but sometimes I may read a book in a day and sometimes it may take a month, the library with due dates just doesn't work well with me. This makes half price books perfect. I can get books at a great price and when I am done take them back and sale them so others can enjoy them. They have a huge selection and rarely do I not find what I am looking for. Maybe someday I will go digital, but I can't imagine not browsing through stacks of books, reading preview after preview to determine if it is something I want to dive into, anticipating the page flip to find out what happens, etc. read more

This location is a lot smaller than the Westport location, no big deal because it's a lot easier to find things here! ha!! That being said, some of the sections are limited =(. The only negative thing I can say is the customer service- the staff wasn't too friendly. I was looking for study materials on Wine. The section was small. No biggy, I wanted to know if there were any more books on wine and if maybe I wasn't looking hard enough or I just over looked it. This place is full of the same stuff you would find on the Barnes & Noble clearance table. 90% of the merchandise seems like just overstock, which you would already expect to get for half price, no? Additionally, I once decided to try "trading in" a book here and found that they do not provide store credit, just cash. I brought in a hardcover book that was released in the last 9 months and expected to be offered around $5 for it, but apparently I am naive and delusional. Instead, the employee said they could offer me "a quarter." At first, I interpreted that to mean a quarter of a $100 bill and I was pretty excited. Then it hit me that she meant 25 cents and I felt, at once, ashamed and duped. Needless to say, I am not a fan. read more

Not really happy with where this store has gone lately. Used to get really good prices on my books, and great buybacks. Half Price was my to-go spot to keep my personal library circulating and I was rabidly loyal for a decade. Now, I take in a TON of brand-new books and used DVDs (three boxes worth, with these brand-new books grossing at least $200 retail value) and they offer me $30? I could have sold them for way more than that online. Not coming back here to sell again. Definitely gone downhill. read more

I love this place. Sorry B&N but I'll go here before I go full price. I can usually find 75% of what I want and what I can't find, I can find on Amazon still cheaper than B&N. The staff is kind of hit or miss whether they're helpful or not but I've come at times when they are super busy. As far as selling books...meh. You'd be getting a little more than garage sale prices for your books so if you're going to put them in a garage sale anyways, you can get store credit instead of cash... Better place to buy than sell, definitely! I've gotten some books for $1 for older copies. They also have games and kid's stuff, stationery/journals, bookmarks, book lights, etc. As well as first editions and autographed copies towards the front of the store. read more

There were held for me and I was very surprised to see they were brand new but half price when I picked them up! The sales associate on the phone was professional, quickly located the books, and advised they would be waiting at the register...and they were! I love HPB. I was at a conference once in Dallas/Forth Worth, which is the original home of HPB, and also where there are 20-some stores. Because of the way the flights worked out I got there very early the day before, so I spent much of my day seeing how many stores I could hit. (Six, as it turns out. I might have a problem.) Having said that, this is my least favorite location in the metro. I mean, I gave it four stars, so I obviously don't hate it, but of the locations I tend to have the worst luck finding things here. Plus--and this isn't the store so much as the clients--the clientele can be a bit annoying. Take, for instance, the carts. All the stores have a few of the shorter shopping carts for customers, but this location seems to have the most people take advantage of them. And then they push through aisles that aren't made for carts, getting in the way and generally being annoying. Why do so many people at that store park carts in the aisles? Why do you need a cart in a bookstore anyway? And why do you have to park it right in the middle of the aisle, blocking the way completely? And as I said, I know that's not the fault of the store or the staff, but still, it annoys me. read more

I'm new to KC so I thought I would check 1/2 price books out. Nice selection, nice arrangements and helpful staff. I bought 5 paperbacks for $25. I breezed through them and brought them back to sell. I had seen previous posts that their buy-back plan wasn't the best. But when she said $2.00 for the previous $25.00, I was astonished. Really? They mark up their books 12 1/2 times from purchase value? Not from me! I will donate to charity and my tax savings will exceed their purchase price. read more

HPB is about as good as it gets for used books in KC. Especially with prices competitive with online book re-sellers. With quirky merchandise and a great array of books, HBP fills the void of booksellers like Border's. I always run into great books here that can't be found at the Jo Co Library. My latest score was Jacqueline Kennedy : The White House Years: Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum. This is my favorite bookstore around! Everytime I go into Olathe I have to stop in to see whats going on.

Mind you, I am a member of the 21st century, so I have a Kindle. OK, I know a lot of people like the paper...me, well, I am the opposite, actually. But there are still some things I like on paper, notably puzzles like crosswords. I like to get a new book of crosswords every once in a while to do with the ol' pen and paper. This place has a terribly small puzzle section with a poor selection. I have snooped around the books while in there, and the stuff is half priced, but only because it's only worth half price. This was the second half-priced book store I went to in my quest for "Atlas Shrugged". On the initial approach I had to wonder about all the homeless and panhandlers outside. I have been told the area is "colorful" in character. I think that means these people couldn't hold a job. On the inside of the store it smelled like mold. The type you find after your basement has flooded and black spots have started to grow. The staff was defiantly friendlier and more helpful then any other half-priced book store in the area, however the guy who was helping me out had a difficult time staying on task his focus was slightly better then a zombie. I would tell him what I was looking for and he would at least get me close. In all I gave up in frustration and went elsewhere read more

It's a used book store, so you can't always find exactly what you are looking for, but the staff is very friendly and helpful if you have any questions. This half price bookstore has the friendliest and most helpful staff! Best in the area. The store itself is neat and organized, making it easy to find books. I really like that the staff here (they don't do this in Overland Park or Independence) take time to chat and actually recommed authors. If you call on the phone, the staff is pleasant, helpful, and if they don't have the book check with other stores to let you know where it is. It doesn't get any better! I think people need to remember that this is a used bookstore and not everyone reads the books you do and then sells them. I hear that every so often that the selection isn't great. This depends on what is brought in. The only thing they could do better is add a couple of tables and coffee! read more

Best HPB location I have been to. Staff is amazing and always helpful and efficient. I visit this store often and can't say I have ever had a bad experience with this team. I have loved this store for many years until one of the cashiers stole money from me. I would be very careful paying with cash. I was shorted $10 from the cashier after paying cash. When I notified them that I was short, they said that they could not do anything due to the register was not over $10. DUHHHHH, the chick behind the register pocketed it. They basically told me that they could do nothing. To bad this store has crappy staff running it. read more

This is less than half a mile from my doorstep. The staff members are friendly, and the inventory is fun with some decent rotation of stock. It's not as big as other Kansas City Metro locations, but it's put a sweet taste in my mouth with the friendly clerks. read more
