I have conflicting feelings about this place. They have a good selection of books & music and I've bought some great finds here. It's a nice, clean, well-organized store to peruse while walking around downtown Fullerton. However, after attempting to sell some books here and reading other people's experiences I'm starting to have second thoughts about continuing to do business here. I brought in a handful of books that I no longer wanted in my collection, most of them being new & popular manga in near mint condition, and some poetry books. I was only offered $8 for all of them. After reading some other reviews, it seems like $8 is their lucky number to offer people regardless of the amount or quality of books they bring in. I wasn't expecting to make anything significant off the books I brought in, I just wanted them off my hands more than anything, but that was just ridiculous. I only found one paperback book I wanted and the $8 barely covered that plus tax. What's even more ridiculous- just a few hours after offering me a measly $8 for my books and telling me the "less desirable" ones were gonna sell for less than $3, I saw them post my books on their Instagram story! So, they give you chump change for your books, but are more than happy to flaunt them on Instagram to entice their followers to come into the store to buy them? That left a really bad taste in my mouth, and it's not like their prices are super cheap either. If you're looking to sell your books, please steer clear of this place. The reviews are not exaggerating, even GameStop would wince at these low ball offers. read more

As an avid reader, I always look for independent bookstores to support. Was excited to visit this place thinking there would be some great finds...I was shocccked at how expensive some books were. Especially ones that have been published 2-5 years ago. They sell them for MORE than I would get brand new at other places. It's used books for more money. There are sections for cheaper books..but it's literally ollllddd books that no one is interested in. If anyone is looking for independent/ used bookstores that are actually well priced. Well, this place is absolutely incredible. I've been here once briefly and just peaked in and out. My daughter and I had lunch next-door and had planned to go in and spend some time thoroughly checking it out. Wow, we weren't disappointed to say the least. She went directly for the records section, as I head off in the direction of every type of book I could fathom. They greeted us when we came in and they had an employee working books on every aisle in case you had questions. The prices are absolutely insane, it was like having a shopping spree. Between my daughter and I we got six books but no records this time. It's lovely to touch the books and smell the books and be in a real book and record store, it's a must go! You check out at the front of the store and they have these great logo cloth bags for only two dollars to carry your wares in. They gave us 4 bookmarks and a couple of rainbow, half off stickers for free! read more

This is such a great used bookstore. Very organized and all reasonably priced. All the books are in good condition, and there are older collectible books. Otherwise, why so many of them appearing as if sick? Really small but sweet bookstore. You can park in the parking garage on the first floor to avoid street parking but the spaces are quite small. This bookstore is super organized and they have a lot of options. The workers are super nice as well. I always have a fun time pursuing. read more

Get me outta here....before I buy everything. Seriously, husband and I spent less than half an hour in this store and we got about 15 vinyl records and 2 books. I made a beeline to the vinyl records section. There weren't too many bit I managed to find a food stack to add to our collection. Prices were reasonable which ranged from one dollar to 5. Not bad at all. Books were a plenty and we skimmed through a few sections. We didn't have much time as the store was about to close, thank goodness or I would have gotten twice as many items. Service was great. Courteous. Informative. And he signed me up for the rewards program. Wow, once you reach 5 stars, you earn 25% off total purchase. This visit earned me 2 stars. I have been buying, selling and trading with bookstores in the US and Canada for about 40 years. This place wins the award for cheapness and amateurism. I took 2 boxes of what I considered "good stuff" - they spent over 1 hour to decide on offering me $16. While waiting, I found a book I wanted for $8. So they get 2 big boxes of books and I get 1 paperback and $8, less tax. I have never dealt with a used store that doesn't offer more in trade that in cash. (Amoeba, for example, offers 30% more in trade than in cash). Huge disappointment and not worth the drive; coming from Long Beach, I probably lost money. read more

My dad was a book collector and when he passed I gathered his books into 19 banker's boxes. Half Off Books only lets you bring in 2 boxes at a time, and after an hour wait, they offered $11 for the lot. That didn't even cover my gas money, so the other 17 boxes will go to the book donation shed at the Fullerton library, two streets over. Their Friends of Library volunteer group hosts 2 major sales a year for donated books, and they have a little bookstore in the library, and all the sales go to help the library. read more

At a time when bookstores are fading fast like record stores back in the days, it's nice to see a place like this thriving. This is a bookstore for true book lovers, not the casual readers that shop at places like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It sells mostly used books, movies, and music, but does carry some new items. It has a pretty wide selection, and even carries graphic novels (comic books). It has that old-fashioned bookstore look and vibe. Customer service was good too. When we walked in someone welcomed us and gave us a quick rundown of the place and where things are located. It buys used books, CDs, and DVD/Blu Ray discs from the public. this shop is such a beautiful place to buy second hand books at great condition! the selection is almost overwhelming and the people there were nice to me (i only spoke to them when i paid since i was just browsing). the selection of genres and overall books is great for a small building but the only reason why my review isnt 5 stars is because of the price! i recommend coming here to look for different editions of your favorite books or maybe even finding a cheaper version. if the price wasnt as expensive as it is for a second hand book store i would have given it five stars but on the other hand stopping by once in a while would be fun and worth the price! read more

This place is for hardcore bookworms. Not Kindle Paperwhite and Amazon Fire only nerds. (They have forgotten where paper comes from anyway. Lol.) It *MIGHT* work if you come here looking for a particular book, although, it is probably best just to see what you could add to your collection. They have some new books, but the majority are used, in good or better condition. Not sure why they call it "Half Off" because many of the finds we bought were much less than slashed-in-two prices. The clearance section is worth a look. Just ask the friendly employees where they're located. Situated in downtown Fullerton, you should find a decent nearby restaurant afterwards. This review is solely on the selling experience. I had a bunch of books that needed a new home. I called Half Off Books, and they said they do buy used books between 10am - 2pm daily. The process was easy, and the staff were very friendly. I do think they could have offered a bit more for my items, as some were out of print/rare and all in great condition. Overall it was a good experience, though, and now I have more room on my shelves at home and maybe someone will find my books to take home with them! read more

Half off Bookstore is a decent sized store with a great selection right in the heart of downtown Fullerton, off the main drag. This bookstore doesn't sell only used books, they have an interesting display of new books (sure, the prices are higher, regular for a brand new books) that shows personality and helps seasoned readers like myself to discover new gems, off the beaten paths titles by classic authors. The store is big, they also sell DVD-s and Blu Rays, a great array of titles, decent prices, comic books, CD-s - a great variety at low prices. So, you can spend some time in Half Off exploring all the goodies, especially if you're a first time visitor like I was. They open at 10 am, close at 10 pm, or midnight on Fridays & Saturdays. Plenty of time to browse or find a cool book! They do have a good selection of used books, very well organized, for some titles they charge higher prices than other places, but still, it's reasonable if you find a good book that you're eager to dive in. Their customer service is good, they do make an effort to acknowledge you, greet you, explain you the layout. They don't have shopping bags, so bring your own, but they do have restrooms, so that's great, especially if you spend more time browsing. I love stopping by at Half Off Books to browse for new reading material when I'm in Downtown Fullerton. Their selection rotates pretty frequently, and I'm always able to find a hidden treasure at a good price. They also have a pretty decent collection of old school media like vinyl, CDs, DVDs. They opened in October after closing their Whittier location and moved here according to the guy working there. Near the front doors is the comic book section, mostly The Walking Dead and some DC/Marvel bits. They have a great section of dvd/blu-ray towards the wall with their mysteries/humor/art section located nearby. Good selection of children/baby books here. Their manga selection is good too. They have a good selection of Franklin Mint and Easton Press leather bound editions which I spent a good amount of time looking for what I wanted. No Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice leather-bound copies but still nice to look around. Their fire sales are great as well; they'll have one in February. The staff is nice, they played some nice music. Restroom is clean. read more

I wish I lived closer so I could peruse this shop more often. The employees are friendly, the shelves are well-stocked, and they regularly have sales and events for great discounts on their books. They have a great selection of new and used books, but they're clearly marked so you won't accidentally pick up a new book thinking you've scored the jackpot. I wish they had a better selection of more modern Sci-Fi and fantasy, but they're limited by what people bring in. Having new books available helps to rectify this as well. They have a large section of children's books, from board books, to picture books, to young adult. Their mystery, horror, sci-fi and fantasy sections are well stocked as well. This is one of the better used bookstores in the area, and I'll stop by when I can. read more

Of all the used book stores and thrift stores I shopped at in OC this weekend, this is definitely the best one! There's a huge selection for babies and toddlers. I found many board book options! They ranged between 2.50-3$ for the used one. The clearance section, I found a handful of board books for 25cents. They were not well known board books and some had some flaps torn out but the sounds still work and the quality and binder was still intact. I ended up getting 7 books for under 2$. It was worth it. Cash only unless minimum of 5$. Would recommend. Fire sale is happening this Friday and Saturday! 1$ for children's book WITH the green tags. read more

Love this books store. Staff is knowledgeable and courteous. Prices are excellent especially during Fire Sales. Other reviews mention that they pay pennies for books. We had a few books to sell and were prepared to be paid pennies for the books. So be it. I noticed a same book on the shelf. They were asking $23.00. My book is autographed and in excellent condition. Their book was not autographed. They offered me .75 for my book. I'm no business major or rocket scientist but marking up a book from .75 to $23.00 seems a bit excessive. Needless to say I opted to keep my copy. I did walk away with $2.50 for selling them 3 bags of books and DVD's. And I will continue to sell them my books for pennies. It's either that or the recycling bin. A book nerd's paradise! I love this place! I come here fairly regularly and I always come out with a great find or two, or three... I grew up a librarian's daughter, so I often can't stomach paying sticker price for books, but sometimes simply checking something out from the library doesn't cut it, I want to own things for my shelves. Some of the newer titles are closer to full price which I totally get. However, you can find lots of great books for under $10, often under $5, really unique things you wouldn't find elsewhere. My boyfriend loves the fantasy section where he always finds an old yellowed paperback with a cheesy 70s art style cover to take home. Staff has always been super friendly and welcoming. Probably one of the best second hand bookstores I've visited. Great selection including rare finds for under $100. The staff is very kind and helpful. Only problem is you need to be careful about what you sell there. If you have books you don't need, really love the store and want to help other people find good books at a good price, it's definitely worth coming in the morning to sell a stack. However, I absolutely don't recommend selling vinyl records there if you want to be paid a fair price for them. I've brought a few in good condition and only got a total of $6 for the the entire stack. It would be much wiser to bring records that don't sell for much online and are collecting dust at your house read more
