Very Very nice garden setting but the barbecue pork was too fatty and the sushi rolls left me unimpressed. Must have been an off night, because our rolls looked nothing like the photos. We are frequent visitors to Ojai and this is our favorite sushi place, not only in Ojai, but in our home area and any of the states/towns we've visited. The rolls are wonderful, and the service has been pretty consistently good. I've had better edamame, but it's not bad here. All in all, I can't believe the place isn't always packed because it's really good. read more

The food is pretty good, not spectacular. The prices are super high. Their selection of rolls is pretty good, but not as extensive as a lot of other places. They just finished a slight remodel and it makes sense and looks good. Not a fan of the bottles outside though. Kinda just looks like garbage to me, but to each their own. The last time I was here, my dinner came out before the miso soup and salad. That was super weird, I think they just forgot. The Salmon poke didn't have enough sauce and the salmon wasn't the best. When it comes to Ojai and sushi, your options are limited, but no one place really stands out. I'll be back here again because its close. read more

Let's start with the important fact that we are locals and have lived here almost 15 years! We have come to this restaurant for many years since it first opened. Tonight was a DISASTER! This is not the only time either. We have had this happen QUITE A FEW TIMES NOW ON A WEEKEND THERE. When you go there now, they have RESERVED tables inside, but yet they say they DON'T TAKE RESERVATIONS. This means that they are #1 - Either playing favorites to big ticket dinner groups or #2 - They are playing the LA kiss ass game to people they think they need to please for more money or because they are on television or who knows?! Let's just say our meal was not cheap and if they deserved a good tip (they didn't), we would have shelled out almost $100 for three people and sat there for way too long waiting for SOMEONE to follow up with a glass of water and the rest of our meal. You know, normal service like pouring water and asking if "everyone is ok?" What they don't understand is that LOCALS who have lived here a long time and are also making a living in powerful Hollywood positions and also raising their children here for many years deserve to be treated the same as everyone else! I'M JOKING but REALLY.....THIS HAS HAPPENED SO MANY TIMES NOW! THE POINT is that EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME! WHATEVER YOU DO AS A LIVING SHOULD NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN HOW GOOD THE SERVICE IS! THAT'S WHAT THEY DO IN LA, NOT OJAI!! THAT'S WHAT A RESTAURANT IS SUPPOSED TO DO.....GIVE GREAT SERVICE TO EVERYONE! It was as if we didn't have a waiter at all! The ball was dropped all during dinner and we showed up before 6pm which is quite early. No one hardly checked up on us and they forgot half of our order, tried to appease us with something complimentary while they made what they FORGOT to and then disappeared again! I'm serious. Didn't come back for the rest of our meal to check on us. This is what happened tonight. They didn't even check on us when it came to the check. We almost walked out and I doubt they would have noticed?! Truly a disappointment!! I will be sending this review to my whole mailing list in Hollywood since most of them are coming up here more now and also moving here. I will tell them to get sushi in Ventura or Santa Barbara and not even bother. When I complained to the girl helping there before we left, she didn't even seem to take it in. My wife is not particularly fond of Sushi or Japanese food but she was daring on our vacation. The food was excellent and there was a lot of it. We split the teriyaki and tempura and a couple of sushi rolls. It was hot and fresh and we couldn't even finish it. Highly recommend this place. read more

Excellent experience. Was in ojai for my anniversary and the wife wanted sushi. We walked from our hotel, the Casa Ojai Inn, and it took less than 10 minutes. The restaurant has a very nice decor and soothing atmosphere. We sat at the sushi bar and had yellowtail and mackerel sushi and a few rolls. The owner was the sushi chef and was extremely friendly and skilled. The fish was very fresh and came out timely. The prices were very fair and the overall experience was great. We've come here since Hakane opened and the review for the old Hakane would be a solid 5 stars....but the last three times we've been there it was terrible service, like big waits for only half of the items we ordered, half sized portions, hot things were cold, and our favorite roll was removed from the menu. We're vegetarian and would get the vegetable roll that was wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber in place of rice, but they have removed that from the menu. Tonight we waited almost an hour to get our vegetable tempura roll which was completely cold and less than half the size it usually is, and an avocado roll that was the diameter of a taquito. Our two vegetable rolls didn't come at all, and when the waitress finally approached us she had clearly forgotten that we'd ordered them. We told her and she went to "check on it". After another 45 minutes elapsed we were tired of waiting and were just going to pay for what lackluster food we actually got when the waitress comes up to tell us that our veggie rolls are "almost ready". We tell her that we have to get going to which she replies "ok but they are going to start making them soon". So all that time and they hadn't even started to make them!? We said we were ready to leave, and paid our check. This was worse than last time, but last time was pretty bad too....that time the young blond kid who was our waiter was rude and generally pre terrible at his job, the food was better that time though. It's sad to see one of our favorite restaurants in Ojai take this turn. read more

Beyond bad. Denny's sushi with lots of rooster sauce (to hide the less than fresh fish?). I've been here twice. The second time was only because it was for a friend's b-day. Nothing was even edible. Although my friends liked their California rolls, I can't abide by cream cheese on my sushi. The setting (esp outside patio) is pretty but unfortunately you really have to leave Ojai valley for anything approaching good sushi. read more

I recently at at Hakane Sushi for the first and last time. I ended up with severe food poisoning after eating there and had to spend a night in the Emergency Room. Never again! Check VC Environmental Health website before you dare to eat there. Horrible experience. read more

From what I can tell Ojai has two Sushi places. Hakane Sushi and then a Sushi bar inside a sea food place down the street. My girlfriend and I stopped in for a light snack before heading out for the night, but ended up getting 2 rolls and an individual piece of salmon sushi. The food was good. We got a crunch roll and a morrow bay roll. The morrow bay roll was interesting because it was just cucumber and fish, no rice. It was an interesting change from a regular roll that I don't see offered at other sushi places. The individual piece of salmon was very good, served nice and cold. The rolls were priced reasonably, the individual pieces were about a $1.25 more than I usually pay. We had good service, but it was a Monday night and fairly empty. And while the following was very entertaining for us to watch, it made my review 4 of 5 stars. The waitresses and sushi chefs were constantly bickering with each other over another table's orders. The table wanted a 1/2 order of a roll, the the chef's were like we don't have that. The waitress then said we're out of tuna for the roll then? And the chef's got frustrated and couldn't articulate that it's stupid to make a 1/2 roll of something. So then some time goes by and the waitress comes back and says they want a whole roll but of two different kinds of sushi! The chefs finally gave in but then made a big deal of charging the roll correctly based on half of the price of each individual roll. So then it all got settled, and of course when the bill got to the table, the diners started asking questions about the receipt. This would have all been fine, but the waitress and sushi chefs kept talking back and forth to each other standing right next to me while I was eating my dinner. Enjoyable non-the-less, but you get a 4 from me for this trip. read more

OMG, this is some of the best sushi I've ever had! My husband and I were in the area for a retreat, and this was our best dinner that weekend. My family and I went to Hakane Sushi on March 30 to celebrate a friend's birthday. Having had positive experiences on previous visits, we assumed we were going to have a pleasant evening and good food. Much to our disappointment and chagrin, the experience was a disaster. Our meal orders went sideways: My husband, my son and his girlfriend received parts of their meals within a reasonable time frame. However, my meal didn't arrive until 45 minutes later, after everyone had eaten. I had to ask the server more than twice about my missing dinner, and the missing orders of California rolls and tempura. The server told us that problems in the kitchen were causing diners' orders to be delayed. I had intended to take out additional California rolls, but decided to just box up the ones on our table to take home. When I FINALLY got my beef teriyaki, I was so aggravated that I lost my appetite. The few pieces of beef i did eat were tough and barely edible! I felt sorry for our server, who seemed very stressed out. He was polite and deducted $12 from the bill, which was appreciated. Unfortunately, we won't return to Hakane. I noticed that my poor review of this restaurant is one of several posted in the last few weeks. Hopefully, the staff of Hakane will read these reviews and make the necessary changes if they want to keep their clientele. read more

My family had a horrible experience here. My husband, son, and I ordered sushi and it was good, but my daughter ordered a chicken cutlet dinner. Our sushi arrived, but her dinner did not, so after more than ten minutes, my husband asked a waiter (not ours), who said he'd check on it. Our waiter came over and said he was sorry but the kitchen had messed up the order, so they were remaking it. We politely said that was fine. More and more time passed and her food did not come. The rest of us FINISHED our food and it still did not come. Finally our waiter brought her dinner, but the chicken cutlet was covered with a sweet brown sauce that was NOT mentioned or pictured on the menu. The waiter said she had not asked for no sauce, but there was no way for her to know she had to! He walked away whispering,"Sorry..." but you know, sorry means money. If you're sorry, you make up for it. The chicken was inedible for my daughter, the vegetables were so undercooked that they were practically raw, so she was left with a scoop of rice to eat. She and I left my husband and son to pay the bill and went to get her another dinner to go at Sea Fresh. My son was so upset because he had chosen Hakane for our dinner, to mark the end of his spring break before returning to college, and he felt guilty because his sister had had to wait and wait for such an inedible meal. Her dinner should have absolutely been taken off our bill, but the restaurant did not even offer. Again, sorry means money. Our meal was absolutely ruined and nothing was done to make it up to us. read more

Our friends took us to Hakane Sushi, it's their favorite restaurant in Ventura ( Ojai ) area. When we walked in this place, I felt like a home! Decoration of this restaurant speaks out owner's taste and personality. Menu was easy to read and had variety of choices, so this place is for everyone ! We ordered 3 sushi roles, Sashimi, Salad and Yakisoba , it was fantastic ! I love sushi role that highlighting fish and taste, not bunch of rice, veggie and cream cheese etc ( a lot of restaurant dose it ) We enjoyed it a lot! Dressing is original and taste so flesh! The owner makes "SAKE" !!! It was slightly sweet and easy to drink. Loved it! If you want to enjoy foods and be comfortable , this is the place! Now this is our favorite Sushi restaurant and cannot wait to take our friends and family there. Thank you to our friends G & M ! read more
