We tried this restaurant on a trip to Ojai with my kids and husband. We ordered a lot of stuff and one of the items what not what we wanted. We asked the server about it and he was very kind but said we need to speak to the manager. Then we explained to the manager that all we wanted to was to change it and she said we need to speak to the owner. When he came, he told us that "it's not his problem that we didn't like it" and that we should have read the menu better and can take this to our family and have them try it. He was very rude and disrespectful. We ended up paying for the dish that we didn't eat. The server was very nice but because of the owner we will not be returning there. read more

Likely the worst Sushi we have (ever) eaten! Sad, right... We were hoping for the best; we came with an open mind as visitors to Ojai for the weekend. Mind you, the service was not un-friendly, the outdoor area seemed pleasant enough. The menu is reminiscent of a bad mall eatery. Hence, 2 stars, not one. The Tuna had a metallic taste and was a translucent pink. I'd eaten fish that looked like that once before and that outcome was not good! Still, I tried it -- tasteless (except the metallic part), and mushy. The rice was heavy and overly sticky. I had one bite of the chewy, sinewy Yellowtail, left the smelly-belly Salmon Eggs after a taste of the overly-overly-salty eggs with a funky taste, and took a hard bite of the Red Snapper -- tasteless and dry, which is what it looked like. We had a Sunimono salad with Octopus. Don't even bother with that. The low quality Sake left us both with a headache and barely a buzz. $70.00 Dollars later... The waitress asked if we'd like to wrap up the rest to take home. Yikes. Perhaps for a Ojai, this is good sushi? As sushi goes, we left saying, "do they really think they're serving good food here?" Fortunately, and thank the (lord), we did not wake up at 4a.m., heaving our guts out. For that, I'm inclined to offer 3 stars, but, no. Ironically, we left and headed to a just-closing Pizza place. The pie was $3.00 (extra small). Again, tasteless and barely average. What gives with Ojai? Tonight, we'll give this town one more shot. We're headed to the best place in town -- according to Yelp. I live in San Francisco and whenever I visit Ojai I make it a point to get over to Hakane. The fish is really fresh, they make interesting, innovative rolls right alongside the classics, their non-sushi menu is also fantastic, and they have great options for those of us who don't eat rice. It's not easy making a "no rice" roll that's easy to eat and tasty and I appreciate that they make the effort. I have seen some of the negative reviews and frankly it sounds like disgruntled ex-employees are trying to be hurtful to these small business owners, which is such a shame. When I was there for dinner over the Thanksgiving weekend, the place was spotless, certainly much cleaner than 80% of the restaurants in the Bay Area! Overall the food quality is excellent, he servers are attentive and helpful, and the restaurant is clean and organized. It's very hard to get such a high level of quality and service in a small town so many kudos to Hakane for pulling it off. I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

Since my office has moved across the street from Hakane, I have tried some different things off the menu and have been poorly disappointed. Gyoza, fried...wish it was steamed. Seasame chicken: thought it sounded good, also fried. WHY?! Later that week had a soup hankering. My go to sushi spot in ojai, I don't really go anywhere else because I don't need to. The atmosphere is relaxed, all the staff is friendly and approachable, and the food is on point. I suggest the ojai roll (my boyfriends favorite) and the albacore tataki roll for someone like me who goes to sushi for the raw fish ! Great sushi spot! We had the baked lobster roll, the Jessica roll, and the Pacific roll. They were all beautiful and delicious. They also came out really quickly and were very reasonably priced. There's a nice outdoor patio that seems to be dog-friendly. We saw this restaurant while driving towards Meditation Mount and it looked good so we stopped on our way back to the hotel. I've eaten sushi in many places and this has to rank as one of the best. I get it everytime. It's THE BEST roll I have eaten in a while. Hakane Sushi utilizes all sorts of different flavors to create food that is outside the norm. Their concoctions are sure to leave a fresh taste in your mouth and leave you wanting more! The sushi is amazing quality, and the fish is fresh and delicious... The pricing is decent, a little on the higher side, but definitely worth it! I love the owner and the sushi chef. Take-san, the head sushi chef, is a complete professional in his line of work and has gone to much schooling in Japan.. The fact that they are Japanese gives it such an authentic feel. The new owner, Jae-san, is bringing this sushi place back from the dead and full-steam ahead into the future. Food was excellent, not overpriced in my opinion (I live in Santa Barbara so maybe I am used to expensive sushi), they had unique rolls that I have not seen anywhere else, the salmon melted in my mouth, the garlic edamame was delicious but very garlicy which I loved. The service was friendly, but the woman who served us was very hard to understand and she seemed to be having a little trouble understanding us. We closed down the place and they didn't hide the fact that they wanted to go home. They cleared off our plates with food still on them, and waited around impatiently for us to leave.
