So I usually don't leave reviews on Yelp ever since I'm just a lurker... but I feel almost compelled to write one for Hair 101. I walked in today (Thursday) and they greeted me right away. Really appreciated being attended to, so quickly. The guy who washed my hair was very thorough and gentle - also probably the longest wash I have ever had at a salon. Evan cut my hair, and although there was a slight language barrier, my hair cut came out amazing! She even taught me some new styles and gave me some great advice. It's only been about 20-25 minutes since my haircut and I've gotten so many compliments on it already! Probably one of the best hair cut experiences ever - 10/10 would recommend especially if you're worried about letting anyone touch your hair. I came to Hair Salon 101 a month ago on February 24, 2018. Originally, I asked for lavender ash bronde ombre, however, my roots were darker and the purple was lighter than what I imagined based on the picture I showed the colorist. Furthermore, I asked the colorist how the color would change since I am fairly aware that over time, the color tends to fade and she assured me that it will turn into a grayish purple over time, but very slowly. After two weeks and a few washes using purple shampoo and conditioner, I noticed that the purple quickly faded and the ends are very dry. After a month as shown in my picture below, my hair no longer has the purple ombre. I am very disappointed with how quickly the color faded out since I expected the color to last between 3-4 months with a slow transition into grayish purple. However, Hair 101 reached out to me and re-dyed my hair to a darker purple and gave me an oil treatment. My hair is much softer and the color is better than before. read more

I loved my first appointment with Kenny at Hair 101. My hair has been through so much that it was damaged, frizzy, and a pain to look at everyday. I did a Brazilian keratin treatment with Hair 101 and it worked wonders for my hair. Kenny really took care of me and didn't rush the process at all. It took around 3 hours and Kenny was super attentive the whole time giving hair tips. My hair feels better today and for the price of $120, it was so worth it! Every couple months or so, my kids and I trek to Hair 101 for our haircuts. It's over an hour drive for us but so totally worth it. First of all, all of the places near my home don't know how to cut Asian hair. And they all charge an arm and a leg. On the other hand, Jenny at Hair 101 is fantastic. She cuts and styles our hair perfectly each time. I spend about $100 for myself and my two kids (13 year old girl and 8 year old boy) and that includes a very generous tip because I love Jenny so much! I walked-in on a Tuesday afternoon for a haircut and was attended to immediately. The whole experience was great, nothing felt rushed. The space was clean and the services are reasonably priced too. The salon is in Flushing, so Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) was predominately spoken, but there was an assistant who spoke English and could translate to the stylists. I came in with long hair, and after shampoo, cut, and blow dry, the services came out to $30(pre-tip). After mentioning Yelp, I got 20% off; my total came out to $24 (pre-tip). The service started off with shampooing, conditioning and a lovely scalp massage. I didn't have a preference for my stylist, so I was paired up with Wison. He carefully examined my hair and took his time to make it perfect. I think he only speaks Mandarin, but with my "chinglish" we managed to achieve the cut I was going for. I notice that with many Chinese-speaking stylists I've had in the past, they don't communicate what they are doing/will do to my hair (probably because of the uncomfortable language barrier). But Wison was different, he kept me in the loop with everything he was going to do and asked about my preferences. I felt as if he had a lot of experience based on the way he was talking about my hair. I knew I could trust him cutting my hair. He is fantastic! I've never been more pleased with a hair cut! I've been here two times for just a haircut. It's pretty decent for a no frills place. The reception/cashier girls always know English, however the rest of the staff don't seem to speak much or any english from my experience. I don't speak mandarin so it can be a bit difficult to communicate but the last time the receptionist came over and helped us translate. It is also helpful to have photos to show the hair stylist what you are looking for. The price is good and if you check-in with yelp and show the cashier when it comes time to pay, you will get 20% off which is what keeps me coming back. The lady who washed my hair spent a long time washing and massaging my scalp, which was really appreciated. I have long thick hair. I felt she was thorough with the cleanse. I waited for a month after my digital perm to write a review just to wait and see how my hair turns out after some time. Eva was my stylist and she did an amazing job to give me luxurious curls and volume. She perhaps has the most experience in doing perms among all the stylists. She trimmed and cut my hair before curling so my hair is layered and doesn't feel too heavy on the bottom. I'm so happy with my new hair and can't believe it is so easy to style and manage on a day to day basis. She was very attention to detail, took the time it needed and explained every process to me. To make my experience even more wonderful, the Salon offered a 30% discount on my perm so I was able to get the highest end product at a very comparable price. I called in first to ask if an appointment is required (it is not). Originally, we both wanted a wash and cut. My sister suddenly wanted a color treatment and she was so quickly accommodated despite how busy it was. The kind receptionist brought over a stylist to sit her down and talk about the different options. Soon after, my sister was on her way to (impulsively) coloring her hair again! What was originally a 30-minute session turned into 2 hours with absolutely no sign of trouble from their side. We were offered water, tea and a small bowl of Chex-mix snacks. My washer gave me the best scalp massage and the most thorough wash! My stylist was phenomenal- very meticulous and focused. The whole thing went by so smoothly. As a person who gets nervous trying new salons, I was genuinely impressed! This salon will become my regular so long as transportation sees fit. Cleanliness, decor, and spacing is an A+. Came here because it was close to work. After reviewing a few places in the downtown Flushing area I decided on this place. My last haircut was Sept 2017. My hair was in desperate need for a refreshing cut. I cut about 5 inches of hair off. The lady that cut my hair was very nice and spoke english well. She asked how I wanted my cut. I'm not too picky about my hair so I told her whatever works with my thick hair. Maybe a few layers which is what most stylists recommend. She did that thing where they cut in between your hair to thin it out, which I'm not much of a fan of but the end result was good. My hair does feel light weight which is great during the hot summer months. Haircut was $30 which is reasonable and cheaper than other salons I looked at. I would come back in the future. read more

Had my hair done by Wilson. Fantastic service, patient, and detailed. First got may hair cut and came back the week after to get my digital perm. But ended up cutting even more shorter. Wilson was accommodating as was his assistant. He also made sure that the machine used to heat the hair wasn't burning me and adjusted when it did get too hot. Wow!!! Can I just say how blown away I am that I came and had to write two reviews (one on here and one on Yelp) - the service is just absolutely incredible and the stylists here are so kind and dedicated! I came here for a digital perm (knowing nothing, bringing a vague, blurry picture and guessing as to what size rollers) and Jenny worked with me for 6 hours on what should have been a 4 hour appointment but I was being a huge pain! They wouldn't let me leave until I was happy and I can now verifiably say, "I am thrilled with how my hair came out!" They even brought me Chex mix and tea when the appointment went on and having never gotten a perm in my life and being incredibly particular and vague at the same time they managed to get me the look I wanted! Lastly, my hair actually still feels healthy (somehow healthier???) after the perm which is just a testament to Jenny's mastery and expertise. If you're like me and envious of those curly locks a la Rachel in Crazy Rich Asians or (insert any gorgeous celebrity with any kind of textured hair) look no further and the prices are INCREDIBLY reasonable for the work they do (trust me, I'm a grad student and we are broke). Lastly, I really appreciate how easy it was to coordinate and book the appointment, the location is easy to find, and nowhere else have I gone to a hair salon where the stylists orders lunch, it arrives after you ask them to re-do the tedious perm to get the desired effect and they let it get cold so they can do your hair! True dedication. PS something I wish I knew and evidently learned the hard way: a cold perm small rollers are not the same thing as a digital perm small rollers! The former will give you a classic 70s perm while the latter will give you beautiful wavy locks. The large digital rollers create a wonderful body wave that is very subtle and curled at the edges. 100/100 will come back and only seek out Jenny for not just perms but all my hair needs. read more

OK, lets get to the point... this salon & stylist Joanne are top notch. i would def come back here! I came in with an appointment (i was a few mins late) but the min i stepped into the salon Joanne greeted me and ushered me to the hair wash station. I told her what i wanted; just a simple trim, and she began to do her work. When she was wrapping up my hair cut she mentioned that i would prob need another hair cut soon (more length) to cut off all my crappy dry and split ends, i laughed and nodded. She then offered to do what she could for the time being... she took a pair of scissors and started snipping at the split ends! One by one. I was blown away by this customer service! Amazing. As she was snipping we started talking about oil treatments and after discussing the process and price i decided to go for it; even though i already said OK to the oil treatment Joanne continued to cut the split ends; what a lovely lady! I got my hair trimmed here from Evan yesterday and I'm so happy with the results. I don't think she was completely fluent in english but it was easy to communicate with her what I wanted. It also helped that I pulled up a picture of what I wanted. She was really nice and listened to what I wanted with no hesitation. My friend and I made an appointment at 11AM on a Saturday morning. We walked in and weren't sure what we were expecting. The customer service was pretty good. They helped us right away and we went straight to wash our hair. The wash was good however the person washing my hair was a little stronger than I thought she would be. It didn't bother me much and the experience was still pretty good. The massage was great. It was our first time there so I didn't request a hair stylist. I have not had a same hair stylist for the past 18 years and I think I finally found the one. Kenny took his time cutting my hair, it probably took almost an hour, not including the wash. I have long thick Asian hair and a lot of it. From my experience, when i got a regular hair cut with layers, the top part of my head would poof up like a poodle and the bottom would be layered. Kenny took his time and made it perfect. My previous hair cut left me so angry because they didn't make the V shape and everything was a mess. I'm so glad Kenny fixed it. I've had so many compliments the past 2 days and my head feels a million times lighter. My friend loved her haircut too and She said she would come back. What I liked about this place, compared to most places, is that they don't force you to write a yelp review to give you 20% off. All you had to do was tell them you found the place on yelp (which I did). My total haircut came out to be $24 with Haircut, Shampoo and Blow out. I got a haircut and blow dry from Evan. I love how my hair turned out! She even taught me how to style my bangs which are at a very awkward length because I'm trying to grow them out. I made a last minute appointment right before Lunar New Year and they managed to fit me in with Kenny! Kenny was really great. I spoke with him in Cantonese and he was super friendly and engaging. He was attentive when he was cutting my hair and took his time despite that my appointment went over time and there were other people waiting. During my hair cut, the outside fire alarm for the building started ringing but no one made a move to leave. It was pretty amusing. Never had that happen. Kenny did cut a little more than I wanted but a lot of the dead ends were removed which I'm happy about. My haircut was $24 with a discount and I had long hair. I went there through a groupon deal for japanese hair straightening. It was ok nothing extraordinary done to my hair. My hair was really straight and pretty on the first day but after couple washes . It is getting back to my normal hair... i don'T think that should be happening. Even if you have groupon they will ask you to add about 60 bucks which didn't really make sense cuz according to the ad it was worth 265 ..so that was kind of upsetting. Today, has been my first time in a few years since I've decided to get my hair cut, colored and styled. As from most past experiences, it's typically a rushed process unpersonal and just getting you out of the door for most chinese salons. After coming to Hair 101, my stylist Shelly listened to every one of my hair concerns and specifics. Summer my colorist section by section colored the whole head and bayalage highlights through. She was thorough and always checking and tending to it every minute. Providing services and complimentary snacks above and beyond any basic salon.
