Not a steak person, but have been told by friends and family that the steaks are absolutely perfect - fresh, huge and cooked to perfection. Really can't complain about portion sizes there either, or prices. Good selection of real ales and some nice proper ciders too. The stone room is really cosy, with an open fire, stone walls and wooden furniture, and the pool table in the bar area nice and cheap (was only 30p a game last time i was there). Would recommend having a steak or steak & ale pie in the stone room if you go, with a good pint of real ale.

We were allowed to take our dog into the pub (although we sat outside for dinner on our first visit as it was so sunny. There is a beer garden at the rear, tables out the front (the street it is on is deadly quiet) and inside there is a small bar area with dining tables and a pool room - i didnt see if there was anything else! On our first visit my two dining partners had the burger - which was awesome! no ordinary burger, it was fully loaded with all manner of stuff, and the chips were to die for. I had a smoked salmon and new potato salad which was in a beautiful dressing and had green beans with it (i hate green beans but magically these were lovely and i ate every last one!). each main meal was less than a tenner. We loved it so much that we went back on our final night. the pub (bearing in mind its in the middle of nowhere, well to us city types it seemed like that!) to find two swedish girls (the barmaid being one) and a Dutch family...plus a barman from Wolverhampton - very cosmopolitan!! It's very cosy and can get a little cramped and short of chairs if you arrive too late on a busy night and arent happy to share a table with people you havent yet met, but i think that actually adds positively to the experience in a strange sort of way. Got revamped a few years ago, which was done really well and has managed to modernise it whilst actually adding to the character of the place. The live music is also really lovely. Good music, good beer, good staff, and good atmosphere... perfect. If you only go to one pub in Aber, let this be it!

The Railway Inn is all about traditional, filling grub; the perfect setting for a Sunday lunch in the Welsh countryside. The interior exudes authenticity with its dark pine skirting and floorboards. The Railway is not a place for gourmet eating and lavish surroundings, it is as wholesome as its surroundings from the cask ales served at the bad to the ENORMOUS dog that lays idly by the fire. To the food. As has been expressed the Railway is not a ground-breaking venue of haute cuisine it is a traditional pub for good, wholesome food. I had the pate to start. It was rich, well-textured and altogether moreish and I enjoyed every bit of it; the only trouble was there wasn't enough toast to match the generous dollop of pate provided. My mother had the mushroom bake, my father the pea and ham soup which were equally enjoyed. Next came the main and the Railway lived up to its reputation of excellent portions size as well as its quality. I had the lamb (as always), my father the pork and my mother the beef. The lamb was lusciously succulent, my knife making little work of it which hastened both my appreciation and completion. Beside the lamb came three fist-sized roast potatoes, cooked to perfection leaving the comparatively bland new potatoes in their wake. Some places such as the Trefeddian in Aberdovey only provide a Yorkshire pudding with the beef and you have to go through the undignified rigmarole of specifically requesting one if you choose any other meat to get one. At the Railway they slap one on every plate; crisp, majestic and golden brown I'm very glad they did so. As for vegetables we were given a fair portion of leeks and cauliflower. There's been some talk in the news recently that the humble cauliflower is losing its popularity compared to other vegetables but it's welcome on my plate any day! Dessert. I was well stuffed by the time the dessert board was passed around and was looking for something light. I went with the old, dependable strawberry cheesecake which ended the meal sublimely. I would prefer a few more strawberries and a little less gelatine normally but the pleasingly solid biscuit base and rich, creamy filling overpowered its shortcomings. On another occasion I would probably have gone for the plum pudding that my father chose which was drowned in custard. All in all this is an excellent place for hearty pub-grub and so shall be rated accordingly. As far as the meal is concerned it was superb, just what one needs on a cold, wintry Sunday afternoon in February. The only sore point was the service. I felt a little too rushed and would have preferred to have at least sipped my pint of Madog's bitter before being ushered into the dining room by the all too hasty staff. Having eaten in many pubs over the years we have been disappointed with the majority of them serving 'boil in the bag slop' and cooked by 'microwave technicians'. None of that here... The place was busy as it was the jazz/fringe festival weekend so the clientelle was of all ages (a bit annoying having babies/kids screaming thoughout the meal) including elderly who came in through the fire door for easy access. I would definitely recommend this place which is also dog friendly. This place is soo good that Seasick Steve was playing there that evening and eating his dinner in the pub part as we left.

On our arrival the owner, Martin, was immediately on hand to help with luggage and welcome us to the lovely Ty Mawr. We were delighted with our huge suite room, named after previous guest Kiera Knightly, the bedroom with lounge area was dual aspect overlooking the free range chickens and lovely grounds and larger than the whole of our own upstairs house! The luxurious and modern bathroom with a spa bath and rainshower made for a very relaxing pre dinner freshen up. The hotel suite rooms also have their own computers with free broadband, maybe not the speediest of computers but useful for looking up local places and event. Tea tray included delicious home made biscuits, only tiny criticism could be lack of variety with only standard but high quality tea and coffee sachets. An extremely comfortable and huge bed which we were sad to leave. The food, as the previous reviewer of Ty Mawr has written, is delicious and of a very high quality both for dinner and a wonderful breakfast...want more home made bread and toast yum.

The welcome from the owners is like being greeted by friends. I have eaten in their small restaurant on three occasions. On each occasion it was full. The clients include many locals who have, like me, discovered this little gem in the midst of West Wales. The food is sourced locally and the menu reflects what is in season. The rooms are generous and beautifully furnished with modern, lavishly fitted bathrooms. The hotel has 5 star rating and the restaurant has been awarded 1 AA rosette. I highly recommend the restaurant, the food is absolutely superb.
