Ive never heard of H Stern until I visited Rio, our tour guide recommended we give them a try. We checked in at the front desk, they give customers a free ride back to your hotel, I did a self guided audio tour of the history and facility. This was very informative to start off with, especially since I was clueless about this company. They are located in beautiful Ipanema, which is a good area with beach front property as well. During the tour you will see each worker actually working on the jewelry, so yes this is a real factory. My favorite was watching the actual drawing/ design of the master piece. Once you go thru the tour they have a store located in the same bldg. for purchases. I did learn a few thing in a short bit of time. They offer rides back to your hotel every hr until 4pm I believe. I hadn't heard of H Stern until I went to Rio and then of course on subsequent travels I see stores all around. My Brasilian friend had told me they make some amazing jewelry. I decided to take a bit of a respite from the beach while in Rio (I was pretty sunburned), and decided to check this place out. I started out in one of their jewelry stores and then the salesperson said I could go on a tour and they'd have a car take me to where ever I wanted to be dropped of afterwards. I was thinking cool I won't have to take the bus back to Barra. :-) The factory is in the heart of Rio, and is quite large. Its very interesting and they did have a tour in English and they explained the process of how they get their gems and then the process of making those gems into the beautiful jewelry that sits in the cases within their stores. Granted be warned at the end of the tour you have the opportunity to buy some higher end pieces, I did end up buying a lovely pendant that set me back a few hundred bucks but I still have it and its held up well with lots of wear. Although the tour people aren't super high pressure so I did appreciate that, and didn't feel obligated to buy but I do like to pick up a unique piece of jewelry when I travel somewhere mind you this might have been the most expensive. After you pass through that section there's another more typical gift shop where you can buy Brasilian themed items and I did end up getting another necklace there too, which is a bit more casual but was unique. So if looking to do something different or if the weather isn't cooperative I'd recommend checking this place out it was quite interesting. read more
