Great service yesterday when I was in the store.The young man was unbelievable. From the moment that I walked in acknowledging me with a friendly greeting. He helped with my jewelry purchases. I bought a few other items and he proceeded to ask if I needed a gift receipt. I explained that I was taking my purchases to Texas to give to my daughter. Great service. Great employee. The service in the store is wonderful and so it's the selection. A really nice selection of women's and men's unique and good quality clothes and shoes. They also have a wonderful gift selection as well as a terrific bookstore. If you're looking for anything about Icelandic history? This is the place to go. Tergesen's is integral to the community and wonderful historic store. read more

I have been to this store three times, including my latest visit to Gimli. I love this store, as it has cool clothing, kitchen gadgets, a bookstore, and so much more. It is like a hip general store. There is an old cash register that sits next to the modern cashing-out system that you expect these days. You also see throwback cans displayed on the wall. In the past, I have purchased coin and cash holders by Umbra that I still use to this day. Today, I bought cell phone charms that were 50% off. They make great gifts! This store also had a decent selection of Lug bags, including my current crossbody purse in purple. I love the hedgehog theme, from dryer balls to nail brushes. I didn't explore much in Gimli in terms of shopping but this is probablly the hippest shop in town. They sell cute jewelery, men and women's clothes, shoes, books, small kitchen gadgets and small decorative stuff. The clothes are mostly casual but there were some cute going out dresses there too. Service was extremely friendly. Good place to pick up some gifts or something for yourself. read more

I've been shopping here for years, been a loyal customer. I'm from Winnipeg, I bought some jeans there this past weekend, and when I came home I noticed this just did not look like they did in the change room, which happens. I phoned to see if I could get an extension of a refund or even an in-store credit as I am from Winnipeg, and wouldn't be able to get there until the end of the month. I really didn't think this would be a problem, and was shocked that they wouldn't extend the credit. Not how you treat a customer who shops there all the time. Won't ever be going back here. read more

History

Established in 1899.

Located on the Southwest Corner of Center Street and First Avenue, H.P. Tergesens is Western Canada's oldest continuously operated General Merchant, operated by the same family since 1899. Early Photo of H.P. Tergesens Store Owner Hans Pjetur Tergesen opened the store in 1899, originally having two stories, the upper story being used for living quarters until 1902. It also served as a Theatre, a Dance Hall and a Classroom. In 1929, after no longer in use the upper story was removed. Svenn Johan (Joe) Tergesen, (son of Hans Pjetur & Sigridur) was a partner with his father and brother for 33 years, before he took the store over himself. Terence (Terry), (son of Svenn Johan & Lara) purchased the family business in 1987. Soren and Stefan, (sons of Terence & Lorna) ran the business together. After Soren died in 1991, Stefan took over the store and still runs it today.

Meet the Business Owner: Stefan T.

Great Grandson of our founder Hans Pjetur, Stefan is the middle child of five and son of Lorna and Terry Tergesen. Raised in Winnipeg Stefan spent his summers and weekends in Gimli and on the "farm" that belonged to his Amma & Afi Olla and Stefan Stefanson. Stefan spent 15 years working as a bartender and waiter to pay for his love of travel. Having spent time in Iceland, Europe, South and Central America and repeated trips to South East Asia. He then brought his love of culture, fashion and literature back to Gimli when it became time for him to step in as fourth generation to helm the store.

The first level houses your new books, trades, collectibles, and CCGs. The second level has your back issues, older toys & collectibles, and an area for people to congregate to play games.
